People hopping over the border to Belgium and Germany to avoid the Dutch lockdown are filling the neighbouring countries’ restaurants and shops despite calls for them to “stay away”.

Since Mark Rutte, the Dutch prime minister, announced the closure of hospitality and non-essential shops from Sunday, border regions have experienced a rush of visitors.

While the hospitality industry in the Netherlands is shuttered, Belgium has resisted scientists’ calls for stricter measures, with restaurants open until 11pm to customers who can prove full vaccination. The German Länder, or states, have been given the power to close restaurants but such measures are generally yet to be enforced.

At a meeting on Monday with the governor of the Belgian province of Antwerp, Cathy Berx, local mayors expressed their concern about the potential spread of the Omicron variant due to border-hopping.

France finds over 180,000 fake Covid passes, and Italy makes arrests in suspected false inoculations.
The developments suggest that resistance to Europe’s vaccination requirements remains significant.

By Constant Méheut and Elisabetta Povoledo
Dec. 21, 2021

Several countries in Europe are reporting growing instances of fake Covid passes and vaccination certificates — an indication that the vaccine resistance that threatened earlier this year to upend governments’ anti-Covid strategies is far from over.

In France, the authorities said on Monday that they had detected over 180,000 fake Covid passes since the measure was introduced this summer. And in Italy on Tuesday, the police in the Sicilian capital, Palermo, arrested a leader of an anti-vaccine movement and a nurse who is accused of accepting payments for pretend vaccinations.

Officials in France said on Friday that soon only vaccinated people would be eligible for Covid passes, which are required for entry into restaurants, cafes and other public places. The news of the forgeries highlighted how vaccine resistance remains strong in parts of the country’s population.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said this month that about 400 investigations had been opened into networks of people suspected of providing the fake passes, including some connected to health professionals.

Thailand

The government just pulled the emergency brakes and suspended the Test-and-Go entry scheme (already registered travellers remain ok). Suspension will be in effect until after New Year when it gets reviewed.

This scheme allowes for doubly vaccinated travellers from a choice number of countries (approx 40 with "trusted level" of infections) to fly to Thailand (with a pre-flight PCR test) and at arrival undergo a 1-day quarantine while a PCR test at arrival gets processed, after that free to move in the whole country.

The "sandbox model" remains in effect for Phuket, no longer for Chang Mai, Krabi, Ko Samui. This scheme allows entry for visitors with or without vaccination and requires a mandatory hotel quarantine of varying lenght depending vaccination status. At least 7 days, with possibility first move on the resort premises, then to roam the island depending on the outcome of a number of PCR tests. The unvaccinated need a 14 day hotel room locked-in quarantine. After that, free to travel within the country. Origin country list limits who will get accepted.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africa’s noticeable drop in new COVID-19 cases in recent days may signal that the country’s dramatic omicron-driven surge has passed its peak, medical experts say.

Daily virus case counts are notoriously unreliable, as they can be affected by uneven testing, reporting delays and other fluctuations. But they are offering one tantalizing hint — far from conclusive yet — that omicron infections may recede quickly after a ferocious spike.

South Africa has been at the forefront of the omicron wave and the world is watching for any signs of how it may play out there to try to understand what may be in store.

After hitting a high of nearly 27,000 new cases nationwide on Thursday, the numbers dropped to about 15,424 on Tuesday. In Gauteng province — South Africa’s most populous with 16 million people, including the largest city, Johannesburg, and the capital, Pretoria — the decrease started earlier and has continued.

Woman Isolates in Airplane Bathroom for 5 Hours After Testing Positive for COVID Mid-Flight

Stephanie Wenger
Thu, December 30, 2021, 1:40 AM·2 min read

A Michigan teacher's trip to Iceland took a dramatic turn when she discovered that she was positive for COVID-19 midway through her flight and voluntarily self-isolated for five hours in the plane's bathroom.

Marisa Fotieo begun to feel ill while on board her Icelandair flight from Chicago to Reykjavík, Iceland, before Christmas and took her own rapid test to find out if she had COVID.

"I just took my rapid test and I brought it into the bathroom, and within what felt like two seconds there were two lines (indicating a positive test)," Fotieo told Today in an interview that aired Wednesday.

Instead of exposing her fellow passengers to the virus, Fotieo confined herself inside the aircraft's bathroom for roughly five hours.

"There's 150 people on the flight, and my biggest fear was giving it to them," she explained to NBC News' Steve Patterson.

Thailand

The Test-and-Go scheme established beginning of November to restart tourism (and allow blocked Thei residents to return again) shows a serious problem. There have now been several cases reported of double-vaccinated travelers, who got the mandatory PCR test no longer than 72 hours before travel, then at arrival passed thru the mandatory one-day quarantine with PCR test, showing no positive signs, but then a few days in their stay at their destination suddenly developed a covid outbreak. Some but not all were omicron.

Bye Bye USA ! --- No, not yet, not so fast, we have a pandemy (and we still want your taxes) ...
Americans seeking to renounce their citizenship are stuck with it for now
As many as 30,000 citizens living abroad have been unable to secure a ‘loss of nationality’ interview during the pandemic

Ed Pilkington in New York
Fri 31 Dec 2021 07.00 GMT

In recent years, Michael has come to regard the United States, the nation of which he has been a citizen all his life, as an abusive parent.

“I can acknowledge my past association with that person while at the same time wanting to keep future association to a minimum,” he said.

Michael – the name is false as he requested anonymity to avoid being inundated with hate mail – found his disaffection with his native country reach crunch point in 2020. The chaotic end of the Donald Trump era combined with the inequities exposed by the Covid pandemic made him despair of being an American.

“Coronavirus made me realize that in the US, if you’re not a member of the moneyed elite you’re left to fend for yourself with virtually no help from the federal government,” he said. “The farcical presidential campaign made me realize that I don’t want to be a member of a society in which my vote is made irrelevant by gerrymandering or the electoral college.”

And so Michael decided to renounce his US citizenship. Having moved to Finland 10 years ago, he would break the ties that officially bound him to a country whose values he no longer recognised.

That’s when Michael’s troubles really began. He discovered that along with thousands of other US citizens living abroad, he was caught in a Kafkaesque trap.

For almost two years, since the pandemic struck in March 2020, most US consular missions around the world have suspended their expatriation services for those wishing to give up US citizenship. The US embassy in London, the largest of its sort in western Europe, announces on its website that it is “currently unable to accept appointments for loss of nationality applications” and is unable to say when services will resume.

The US state department says giving up citizenship requires a face-to-face interview with a government official, and that it is too risky given coronavirus.

Delays have led to a growing mountain of disgruntled citizens. By some calculations, there may be as many as 30,000 people among the 9 million US citizens living abroad who would like to begin the renunciation process but can’t.

In Iceland, when you have to go into quarantine, you have to go to a Red Cross Hospital. Other countries give you other options.

British DJ escapes prosecution after sparking New Zealand’s first Omicron scare
Robert Etheridge, aka DJ Dimension, apologises for ‘my misunderstandings’ in breaking isolation rules and visiting Auckland venues before testing Covid-positive

A British DJ who triggered New Zealand’s first Omicron scare after breaking home isolation rules will not be prosecuted for the time being, authorities say.

“The Ministry of Health does not plan to refer this case to the police at this stage,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that it “needs to balance the deterrence effect from any potential prosecution with enabling an environment that does not discourage future cases from assisting with the public health response to Covid-19”.

Robert Etheridge, also known as DJ Dimension, arrived in New Zealand on 16 December and spent seven days in one of the country’s managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facilities, where he returned three negative Covid test results, Stuff reported.

After leaving MIQ he was required to spend three days in home isolation but did not wait to receive a negative day-nine test – as also required – before entering the community.

According to the ministry, he visited a series of venues in Auckland over two days including nightclubs, a shopping precinct and restaurants before receiving a positive test result on 27 December and being returned to MIQ.

Heart attack patients told to make own way to hospital as Covid surge hits northern England
NHS under pressure as growth rate in hospitalisations more than doubles compared with London

Andrew Gregory Health editor
Tue 4 Jan 2022 18.17 GMT

Heart attack patients calling 999 in parts of northern England are being asked to get a lift instead of waiting for an ambulance as hospitals in the region experience more than double the growth rate in numbers of Covid patients compared with London.

Four more NHS trusts in England – all outside London – declared “critical incidents” on Tuesday amid soaring staff absences, rising numbers of Covid patients and growing pressure on emergency services.

Macron declares his Covid strategy is to ‘piss off’ the unvaccinated
French president stokes divisions as parliament debates tighter requirements for mandatory health pass

Jon Henley in Paris
Tue 4 Jan 2022 23.17 GMT

Emmanuel Macron has prompted a furore after saying that his government’s vaccination strategy is to “piss off” people who have not had coronavirus jabs by continuing to make daily life more and more difficult for them.

“I am not about pissing off the French people,” the president said in an interview with readers of Le Parisien daily on Tuesday. “But as for the non-vaccinated, I really want to piss them off. And we will continue to do this, to the end. This is the strategy.”

Macron’s remarks came as the French parliament debated new legislation that, if passed, will mean only the fully vaccinated – and no longer those with a negative Covid test – will qualify for the country’s health pass from next month.

The pass, introduced this summer, is required in France for access to indoor public places such as cafes, restaurants, cinemas, museums, concert venues and sports centres, as well as to board long-distance trains and planes.

“In a democracy, the worst enemies are lies and stupidity,” Macron said. “We are putting pressure on the unvaccinated by limiting, as much as possible, their access to activities in social life.”

"Stoking division", huh? That's a rather narrow and biased interpretation to adopt. Even the Guardian succumbs to the temptation to ignore all context and go for the frizzy language. So appealing to stoke division for their own part.
