Re: The View From Maybelot
First we were told to expect rain. Then snow, but less than an inch. Unexpectedly, we got about six inches of fluffy snow. The birds are enjoying the feeders.

This is the time of year we’d get a week of summer most years, when I lived in NVA, then back to snow or whatever it had been doing before.
Beauty.

Two days ago it was 68 degrees and we were tooling around in the MG with the top down.Phoenix520 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 1:19 pm This is the time of year we’d get a week of summer most years, when I lived in NVA, then back to snow or whatever it had been doing before.

That is lovely, Bird feeders and wind chimes. Q: do wind chimes scare off the birds?
Re: The View From Maybelot
The power has been our for more than three hours, but at least we’re warm.

You may want to research ventilators for your wood stove, self-propelled by minimal electricity generated off the temperature difference

Re: The View From Maybelot
Our stove has a built-in blower that we can run on a 12v battery when the power’s out. But so far we haven’t needed it. We’ve been keeping to doors to the living room closed, and the stove keeps it nice and warm.

No note… no “Hey, sorry we knocked over your post and broke your light.” It probably happened in the middle of the night. People use our entrance to turn around all the time (it’s the only safe place for miles) and it was raining cats and dogs here last night. So I can see how it happened. But a note would have been nice.

Our mailbox is 150 feet from the house. For grins, kids used to knock it over when we first moved in. (We assume it was kids.) It didn't happen frequently, but it happened enough. Since we live in the woods, it was easy to get the right height stump and screw the mailbox into the top of it. No one has ever bothered it since.
But, yeah, a note would have been nice.

I guess you will have to fortify the exposed corners of the entryways with some huge bolders. That will make them notice the touched something.

This is in the VDOT right-of-way, so we can’t have boulders or a gate or anything permanent other than these posts. And it’s dark af out here at night which is why the posts are lit up.
I don’t mind people pulling in to turn around or even to stop and take pictures (we do have a lovely view). It’s just annoying when this sort of thing happens.

Yeah, motion detector wired to a revolving/flashing red light, they get too close to the post and it looks like they're getting pulled over by the cops. I am willing to wager that 20 drivers would flee immediately for every one that took the time to see what the flashing red light is.

Re: The View From Maybelot
We split firewood today. This represents about 20% of the red oak we have to split. It took just under 3 hours to split all this. By the time we’re done we should have enough to last the winter, although we have more trees that need to come down.
We also have a lot of black locust still to cut down. We don’t normally split that. It’s not that big around and it’s super dense - it burns slow and hot, so that’s what we burn at night (but probably not til next year, unless we find some that’s already dead).
I’m in my happy place splitting firewood and cracking kindling.

Looks delightful. Reminds me of my days splitting wood with my father.

Whenever we visit friends who have a lot of wood to split, the mr grabs an axe. He’s in his happy place, too. Hint hint.

Any time you want. The door’s open! We don’t use axes, though.Phoenix520 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 02, 2022 2:14 am Whenever we visit friends who have a lot of wood to split, the mr grabs an axe. He’s in his happy place, too. Hint hint.
We have a Wolfe Ridge 28Pro all hydraulic log splitter. So many things to love about this thing (electric start, hydraulic wedge, hydraulic lifter), but what I love most about it is I can operate it by myself (although I do need help getting it in place).
Here’s a link to the log splitter in case you’re interested.
