Horses! and pets/animals other than cats and dogs
Re: Horses! and pets/animals other than cats and dogs
In general, I learned it's not a good idea to interact with raccoons. We did have some who were friendly enough to bring their babies, but I still always kept my distance.

I think it's best to leave wild animals wild and to intervene only when in clear need of help, e.g., broken limbs, emaciated, etc.

One night when I lived in Virginia, I was washing dishes when my cat rubbed against my leg. Looking for food, I figured. I stroked the kitty's back. But his fur wasn't soft. Looked down. I was stroking a racoon. I jumped, racoon ran up the curtains. Took awhile, but he finally left.

Re: Horses! and pets/animals other than cats and dogs
Many decades ago while at scout camp, we were sitting outside out scoutmaster's tent one morning when we here a whimpering voice from another scout. He was saying a bit softly, "someone come help, please...." As we open the tent flap we see the scout in his bed with a smaller raccoon curled up sleeping on him like a cat. As it turned out, it was Lindy, a raccoon that had spent some time as a guest of the nature/environment area and had become comfortable with humans. The nature director ended such practices after that to ensure that wildlife remains wild.
While they were no longer kept by the nature area and folks were reminded to let nature be nature, the raccoons understood well how to profit off of the humans hanging out in their yard, especially in those 8 weeks in the summer. They were more organized than some of our troops.

Thank you, that was most appreciated!
The Royal Cavalry of Bahrain were riding in traditional dress, and yes, those were Arabians they were riding.
Did you know that the drum horses are the 'senior' horses in the Army, and have the rank of Major?

Carp are an exotic invasive nuisance species in Australia. They are outcompeting native species and fouling the waterways. They are being controlled (in theory anyway) by stunning everything in the water with a cattleprod or something, and then picking them off the top when they float to the surface. A friend reports seeing Rangers with 3 tinnies loaded to the gunnels with thousands of dead or dying fish. They had to practically row past them to keep their wake from flipping the tinnies. Stunning is not doing the platypuses any good though.Azastan wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 10:49 pmCarp fishing is a great sport in the UK. Carp are not caught to be eaten, they are caught and returned to their waters. Carp can live to great age, and many individual carp in the UK are well known and have names. There were several magazines in the UK devoted to carp fishing. "Boilies" being the main bait.MN-Skeptic wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 10:24 pm So... recipes included?
Basically, Koi are carp. Which brings to mind a Czech tradition my husband used to tell me about. Having carp for your Christmas dinner is a very old Czech tradition. That tradition also calls for bringing home the live carp a few days before Christmas and keeping it in your bathtub until it's time to prepare it. I did a little googling and apparently he wasn't making this up. He grew up in a very Czech community in northeast Iowa so I imagine there were folks there who kept the tradition alive.

One of the best horses I'd ever owned, this is Lil Roan Cowgirl, barn name Lucy. Registered QH, she was 15 days shy of being 32 years old when she passed away. She was the Red Mare of Red Mares.Tiredretiredlawyer wrote: ↑Sat Jun 11, 2022 9:02 am Arabians are da bomb! Don't tell Princess I said that! (She's 100% American Quarterhorse. They lay a lot of eggs and there's not much that eats them. Being nothing more than really large goldfish in essence, they are prodigious eaters, produce vast quantities of waste material, and can be so thick in waters that one can almost walk on water by stepping on them.keith wrote: ↑Sat Jun 11, 2022 9:13 am Carp are an exotic invasive nuisance species in Australia. I'm glad none of mine do that.
On the other hand, it's so wet right now that they'd probably just sink into the mud and disappear, so it's just as well they don't try it!

One time my old Quarter horse did that and was so still that I walked out to see if his flanks were still moving. He would sometimes canter when he was sleeping flat which was also very bizarre.

That tweet is being debunked on Twitter. The photo is a stock photo.

"Lest you get too upset, there is a real horse who refuses to be ridden by flopping to the ground. His name is Jingang. There is ample footage of his owner trying hop on Jingang’s back, and Jingang collapsing as soon as his foot hits the stirrup. Jingang is the real hero here. He is a special boy. All hail Jingang."
I would like to point out that the article quoted above states that horses do not sleep lying down, but only standing up. This is NOT TRUE. Horses *must* lie down at least one hour every day in order to get REM sleep, or they will become sleep deprived.
As FiveAcres pointed out (and as many of us can confirm), horses not only sleep lying down, but they will whinny, nicker, and canter, all whilst asleep in REM.

When my Maybelline got older, she would start lying down when I was on her back! I didn't take the hint. She was a Quarterhorse with Appendix title meaning she was part Thoroughbred and she looked it.

Wild Stallion Moved to Sanctuary After Becoming Too Bold
Chip was a big food raider and was aggressive with people.
Delegate's Pride—also known as “Chip”—was removed from his home on Assateague Island in Maryland. The 12-year-old wild horse had become more confrontational and obsessed with raiding human food. He was moved to Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas, which is part of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).1
Chip often led a band of horses, although occasionally he was driven out by another stallion. He became more aggressive over the years.1
“It is possible that some of this behavior was learned, as his father was also aggressive, although not to the extent Chip was,” Hugh Hawthorne, superintendent of Assateague Island National Seashore, tells Treehugger.
Since 2017, there were nine known incidents of visitors being injured by a horse on the island and five of them involved Chip, Hawthorne says.
Chip is currently living in a four-acre pasture while he is under quarantine. Once he passes that mandatory period, he’ll move to a 1,000-acre pasture with hundreds of other horses.3
“Chip has already won the hearts of his caregivers at Black Beauty Ranch. He appears to be relaxed and content in his new home. He calmly stepped off the trailer when he arrived and showed us how much he already loves Texas grass,” Noelle Almrud, senior director at Black Beauty Ranch, tells Treehugger.

If he stepped off the trailer calmly after traveling over 1400 miles, then he's amazing.
