Koi are a big deal in Japan, where they have all sorts of cultural significance. So a $1 million-plus price for a national grand champion show winner is not uncommon. Unfortunately, the colors don't breed true, so the offspring of a fish that has won for its coloring will produce a myriad of different colors, thus the offspring aren't guaranteed to be show quality. But given that they are very long-lived in captivity when well cared for, the $1.8 million championship fish could outlive its owner and maybe even its owner's great-grandchildren. The longest-lived koi attained a documented age of 226 years before dying in 1977.

I downsized after the kids flew the nest, first into a Manhattan high rise and now into a condo in the burbs. A new job at the beginning of COVID that will allow me to work remotely full time carries the potential to buy a house with more land in the next couple if years.

The cormorants and egrets down here would make quick work of the stock in a koi pond, if I had one.. ;)

JohnP's pond will be fully enclosed in his 20000 square foot greenhouse (which will also hold his orchid collection), so not a problem.

I seem to recall that a good way to keep cormorants, egrets and herons (the last of which we have here) from getting koi is to have vertical walls to the pond and to have the pond be deeper than they can operate in -- 4 to 5 feet deep (or 1.2 to 1.5 socialist "meters," for those of you who live in countries that don't believe in freedom). That also means that raccoons and other similar sorts of creatures would have a tough time grabbing them. That's why I don't want to go with a small 10' x 10' (3 socialist meters square) pond that holds a half dozen fish -- I want to wait to do something a little bigger, more permanent and a little more critter proof.

As far as the greenhouse idea, I prefer to keep the 20,000 square foot greenhouse for the orchids and the hothouse heirloom vegetables. As somebody pointed out upthread, koi are bottom feeders and generate a lot of waste. It's not recommended to have an indoor koi pond, even in such a large structure, because it can really reek of ammonia, etc.

Daily water changes of a certain percentage will help with that ammonia problem, and in the meantime, FREE FERTILIZER for your dahlias!

Yeah, that's what my sweetie would say. He'd comment that it was a bottom feeder, so the time in the bathtub would get rid of some of that bottom feeding taste.
If your hosts do not prepare the carp correctly, you just keep another tradition and throw them out the window. You know how those Bohemians are.

This is why some places want to see photos of you with your horses before they sell you ivermectin. If you go into a Tractor Supply, or a Coastal Farm and Ranch, and you've NEVER bought hay/feed/muck buckets/manure forks/vet wrap etc., they will want to know why you now want ivermectin.

They may be fine with you wanting ivermectin for 'covid', but they need to keep their customers--the people who actually HAVE horses and who need to de-worm those animals--happy. I can tell you that the FB horse pages are not very happy about paying $10/tube for ivermectin (when they can get it, that is).

When I started dating mr520 we’d go to Tai Chi classes at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena. Chow Li Chi was the teacher, and he eventually married us in a Daoist “companionating” ceremony in Dabney Garden at CalTech. If Chow Li was sick, Mr520 was the substitute teacher.

The Museum had a large koi pond with a bridge in the courtyard between exhibit spaces. Two of the koi were over 100 years old. Layton, the former groundskeeper, was moving on and the new guy trailed him around for a couple of months, learning the ropes. On the day before Layton’s last day the new guy, wanting to show some initiative, decided he’d clean the koi pond one morning before Layton arrived. He got out a jug of bleach…. :cantlook: :crying:

None survived. Layton stayed on until they hired a new, new guy. :brokenheart: :brokenheart:

ETA: Layton was beyond devastated. He’d cared for those fish for decades. He had a real relationship with the oldest two.

They are both toddlers.

Reverie has an amazing temperament.

Thanks, it is always nice to see Arabians! The grey is named Suresh Houdini, and the farm is in Gilmer, Texas. She has a few Arabians, a couple of quarter horses, a draft horse, and a couple of minis!

I am actually on my second virtual Tevis ride, utilizing another one of my Arabians.

We have just 13.2 miles to go to finish the second virtual Tevis. I have a fabulous video of Comet (registered name Nejed Nijm Zarik) and four school buses, but it's too big a file to post here unfortunately. So instead, here is Comet saying NOPE to the storm drain grate.

River crossing is just about one more mile, and it's supposed to rain tomorrow, so the puddles will be filled up again!
