Maui fires: six people killed in unprecedented Hawaii wildfires fanned by Hurricane Dora
Officials said at least two dozen had been injured as the fire destroyed businesses in the historic town of Lahaina in western Maui
Hawaii wildfires: how did the deadly Maui fire start and what caused
it?

Six people were killed in the unprecedented wildfires that tore through the Hawaiian island of Maui overnight, authorities said.

The fires, fanned by strong winds from Hurricane Dora, destroyed businesses in the historic town of Lahaina, and left at least two dozen people injured, officials said at a press conference Wednesday. There have been 13 evacuations for three fires.

Rescuers with the US Coast Guard pulled a dozen people from the ocean water off Lahaina after they had dived in to escape smoke and flames. Burn patients have been flown to the island of Oahu, officials said.

The US president Joe Biden said he had “ordered all available federal assets on the islands to help with response.” Biden expressed his condolences and said that he and his wife Jill Biden’s “prayers are with those who have seen their homes, businesses, and communities destroyed”.

On Wednesday afternoon, Lahaina by US Civil Air Patrol and the Maui Fire Department conducted flyovers and determined that at least 271 structures had been damaged or destroyed. But assessing the full extent of the damage could take weeks or months, said Mahina Martin, a spokesperson for Maui County.

Hawaii fires: At least 36 killed as flames sweep through Maui

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66460401
The deaths in the city of Lahaina, the island's main tourist destination, came as strong winds from a distant hurricane fanned the flames.

The fire is one of several ongoing blazes that have burnt entire neighbourhoods to the ground.

Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their homes and a state of emergency has been declared.

A huge search and rescue operation is under way, with some people still unaccounted for.

"We barely made it out in time," Kamuela Kawaakoa, who fled to an evacuation shelter on Tuesday with his partner and six-year-old son, told the Associated Press.

"It was so hard to sit there and just watch my town burn to ashes and not be able to do anything," he said. "I was helpless."

Five evacuation shelters have been opened on Maui and officials earlier said they were "overrun" with people. The island is a popular tourist destination and visitors have been urged to stay away.

The devastating fires that roared through Maui this week, killing dozens and ravaging the historic town of Lahaina, scorched a beloved tree that has been described as the largest banyan in the US.

For generations, the majestic tree along Lahaina Town’s historic Front Street served as a gathering place with leafy branches that unfurled to give shade from the Hawaiian sun. By most accounts, the sprawling tree was the heart of the oceanside community – towering more than 60ft (18 meters) and anchored by multiple trunks that span nearly an acre. This year the town celebrated the banyan’s 150th birthday with cake.

Today, the tree is still standing but the fire that burned through the area left it charred.

“It certainly doesn’t look like that tree is going to recover,” James B Friday, an extension forester with the University of Hawaii, told the New York Times after reviewing photos and videos of the damage. The tree’s thin bark would not have provided adequate protection from the flames, he said.

The colossal tree has shaded community events, including art fairs, for 150 years.

“It’s kind of the center of town,” Amy Fuqua, a Maui resident, told the Associated Press in a 2016 interview when she was the manager of the Lahaina Visitor’s Center. “Everyone knows where it’s at. It has an important significance to the town and it feels good under there.”

At the time it was planted in 1873, a gift shipped from India to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Protestant mission in Lahaina, the tree was only an 8-ft (2-meter) sapling. It was planted a quarter century before the Hawaiian Islands became a US territory and seven decades after King Kamehameha declared Lahaina the capital of his kingdom.

The tree’s enormity – and its many trunks – is because of how it grows. Aerial roots dangle from its boughs and eventually latch onto the soil. Branches splay out widely and become roosting places for choirs of myna birds.

It has been described as the the “heartbeat of Lahaina Town”.

“I can say everything in Lahaina is gone,” Maui resident Dustin Kaleiopu told CNN. “Everyone that I know and love, everyone that I’m related to, that I communicate with, my colleagues, friends, family – we’re all homeless.”

Honestly, the death toll is lower than I would have imagined given the devastation I saw. Just horrific. I can''t really believe.

Maui wildfires deadliest in modern US history
The wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui have reached a grim milestone, now being the deadliest in the US in the past century.

https://www.dw.com/en/maui-wildfires-de ... l-1573-rdf
Authorities confirmed that the Maui wildfires death toll has reached 89, marking it as the deadliest wildfire in the United States in the last hundred years.

The newly released figure has exceeded that of the 2018 Camp Fire in northern California, which claimed 85 lives and devastated the town of Paradise.

The new death toll Saturday came as search teams with cadaver dogs sifted through the ruins of Lahaina, four days after a fast-moving blaze leveled the historic resort town.

"It's going to rise," Governor Josh Green said about the death toll as he toured the devastation on historic Front Street.

"We can only wait and support those who are living. Our focus now is to reunite people when we can and get them housing and get them health care, and then turn to rebuilding."

Hawaii wildfires: at least 93 confirmed killed after deadliest US blaze in 100 years
Governor says death toll in Lahaina is expected to rise after ‘worst natural disaster that Hawaii ever faced’

Guardian staff and agencies
Sun 13 Aug 2023 03.57 BST

At least 93 people have died in the fire that consumed the historic town of Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui, officials said, making it the deadliest US wildfire in more than a century and with the toll expected to rise.

“It’s an impossible day,” the state governor, Josh Green, told reporters on Saturday after viewing the devastation. Earlier, he said operations were now centred on “the loss of life”.

The fire would “certainly be the worst natural disaster that Hawaii ever faced”, he said. “We can only wait and support those who are living. Our focus now is to reunite people when we can and get them housing and get them health care, and then turn to rebuilding.”

At a press conference later he repeated his warning that the death toll would rise. Dogs trained to detect bodies have covered only 3% of the search area, said the Maui county police chief, John Pelletier.

“We’ve got an area that we have to contain that is at least 5 square miles and it is full of our loved ones. And we’ve got 89 so far. Today we identified two,” Pelletier said, adding: “None of us really know the size of [the death toll] yet.”

I remember the banyan tree, and it was one of the first things I thought of. Lani lives on a different island, but I have a friend who has a condo not far away from Lahaina.

‘Real threat to city’: Yellowknife in Canada evacuates as wildfire nears
20,000 residents of capital of Northwest Territories ordered to leave after forecast that wildfire 11 miles away could arrive by the weekend

Tracey Lindeman
Thu 17 Aug 2023 04.07 BST

An evacuation order has been issued for Yellowknife in the north-west of Canada as a wildfire comes closer, with a local minister saying: “The fire now represents a real threat to the city.”

Shane Thompson, the environment and climate change minister for the Northwest Territories, said on Wednesday night that the fire could reach the outskirts of Yellowknife by the weekend and was about 17km (11 miles) away.

Teams were also working to evacuate Hay River, a community of 3,000 on Great Slave Lake, by bus or plane on Wednesday night as the fire approached.

Residents in Yellowknife, the capital and only city in the Northwest Territories, were urged to leave as soon as possible as part of a phased evacuation, with those living along the Ingraham Trail, in Dettah, Kam Lake, Grace Lake and Engle Business District at the highest risk.

Other residents were until noon on Friday to evacuate.

Yellowknife’s mayor, Rebecca Alty, said evacuation flights would begin on Thursday at 1pm and continue until everyone was evacuated. She stressed that the order was being issued early in order to give everyone enough time for an orderly evacuation. “It’s being called now, so that we can allow people the opportunity to drive while the highway is still open. The highway is subject to closures at any time. Conditions will be smoky, and residents should drive with caution and care.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for everyone. Please look out and help one another as you can. If you’re driving, and have space, please consider bringing a friend or pets.”

On Tuesday night, local authorities had declared a territory-wide state of emergency and an evacuation order for the outskirts of Yellowknife, a city with a population of 20,000.

Canada wildfire: Yellowknife evacuees turned away from full flights

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canad ... gn=KARANGA
People who waited in hours-long queues to board flights out on Thursday were told by officials to try again on Friday or Saturday.

The country's two major airlines are also facing criticism over soaring air fares and rescheduling fees.

As of Thursday, the fire was 15km (9 miles) north-west of Yellowknife.

It could reach the city's outskirts by Saturday.

It is one of nearly 240 wildfires raging through the Northwest Territories, which declared a state of emergency late on Tuesday.

While the region is vast and sparsely populated, its capital of Yellowknife is home to some 20,000 people - all of whom have been ordered to get out of the city by noon on Friday.
