Villages told to evacuate as New Mexico wildfire pushes north

Two mountain villages were told to evacuate in northern New Mexico on Sunday as strong winds pushed the largest active wildfire in the United States through centuries-old farming and ranching communities.

High temperatures, low humidity and windy conditions have dried up the rain we got last week.

1. That is a seriously big airplane to be barnstorming that close to the ground... He's probably below the 500 foot altitude minimum that aircraft usually have to observe.

2. They're running out of good names for the fires. Kind of like how the government has a lot of boring code names for secret military programs. The aircraft represented by "Have Blue," "Tacit Blue," "Oxcart," "Tagboard" and "Senior Crown" are remarkable achievements (look them up) but don't sound very interesting with the code name. (Modern intelligence community code names are chosen by the programs themselves these days, not some central authority like in the past, so they can be rather amusing, even if they don't give anything away about what the program does. I could give examples but then I'd have to kill you...)

It's even more impressive when you throw mountains into the equation.

That's DC-10 if anyone want's to know, it's a widebody aircraft, and pretty damn big.

I have a friend who lives on a high plateau near Santa Fe. She is surrounded by mountains in the distance on all sides, and she gets spectacular sunsets and sunrises, which she often posts on Facebook. Her most recent posts are of the Jemez mountains on fire. :crying:

The bright line of fire at the top of the ridge line is where most of the houses were burning.

 The two largest public utilities in CA, Edison and PG&E, have been responsible for some pretty damn destructive disasters in the last decade. This might be another. Edison, this time.
