I suppose the upside is that you have identified a potential risk with no (as far as I know) serious damage. There’s always a silver lining

Yes. And our smoke detectors work like they’re supposed to.

Maynard has been charged with some particularly awful crimes.

And yet I’m taken aback by the contrast between the connotations of the phrase “former professor” and the squalor of Maynard’s life as an adjunct, sleeping in his car and living on food stamps. The phrase is misleading in this context.

I dunno. The Yeti's GF, Dr. J, is a full time lecturer at Stanford now, but previously was an adjunct professor splitting her time between Berzerkly & UC Davis, and she did fine. (She did bail and spend a few years perfessering in Germany, not because of the money so much, but because she realized the old boy network at UC at that time wasn't in a hurry to tenure a black woman any time soon.)

Hundreds rescued after fire breaks out in Hong Kong high-rise
At least 13 injured as dozens are evacuated from rooftop of Hong Kong’s World Trade Centre in busy shopping district.

Published On 15 Dec 2021
15 Dec 2021 Updated: 15 Dec 2021 10:46 AM (GMT)

More than 1,200 people have been rescued from Hong Kong’s World Trade Centre as dozens of firefighters managed to extinguish a fire that ripped through one of the city’s busiest buildings and left more than a dozen injured.

Police at the scene told reporters that everyone at the 39-story structure in Causeway Bay has been brought to safety by 5pm (09:00 GMT), after more than 300 were trapped earlier on the rooftop of the building, which houses both offices and a shopping centre.

“The fire has been extinguished,” said Al Jazeera’s Britt Clennett, reporting from outside the ashen building.

At least 13 people were taken to the hospital, with some suffering from smoke inhalation.

“This is one of the busiest shopping districts and it has caused a lot of chaos and a lot of stress,” said Clennett. “This happened duringpeak hour,” she added.

“There would have been many people inside that building having lunch with their colleagues, perhaps out shopping.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but the South China Morning Post (SCMP) said the fire broke out at 12:37pm local time (04:37 GMT) in an electrical switch room before ripping through the scaffolding of the building, where renovation work is under way.

Police said they had opened an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Wednesday’s blaze triggered a large response, with firefighters seen using several using emergency ladders to evacuate people.

Firefighters mobilised two breathing apparatus teams and two water jets to help fight the fire, police said.

(CNN) - Law enforcement officials were on the scene of a "major industrial accident" at the ExxonMobil plant in Baytown, Texas, early Thursday, officials said.

Initial reports are that some type of explosion occurred inside the plant, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a tweet. Four people may be injured, he said, three of whom were taken by Lifeflight and one by ambulance.

10 Illinois firefighters walk off job after man convicted of arson appointed new chief
Jerame Simmons pleaded guilty to arson more than 20 years ago when he was just 18

Pilar AriasBy Pilar Arias | Fox News

Ten out of 13 firefighters with a volunteer Illinois department have quit after their chief was replaced by a man once convicted of arson.

Fire Chief John Rosenkranz was removed from his post and replaced with Assistant Chief Jerame Simmons, at a fire district board meeting in East Carondelet on Monday, FOX 2 reports. The newly-appointed fire chief pleaded guilty to arson more than 20 years ago when he was just 18. The two can be seen in video seated at the same table when the change was made.

Jerame Simmons is reportedly the son of Herb Simmons, who is the long-time director of the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency. He was accused of setting fire to a vacant home and setting another, smaller fire, at Dupo High School. He served probation, but said Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has since pardoned him.

Community members say they haven't forgotten what happened all those years ago.

"It’s a pardon. Still, the town remembers the school being set on fire," former fire captain Laura Rosenkranz, wife of the former chief, told the TV station. "The town remembers the house set on fire where we had firefighters fall and be injured."

Former chief Rosenkranz called the decision, "appalling and disgusting." He doesn't believe the community will have adequate fire protection as a result of the mass resignations. He did not expect the replacement decision to come down days before Christmas.

Multiple grass fires break out in Boulder County amid strong winds, all of Superior evacuated
All of Superior is under evacuation notice
https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/w ... rong-winds
BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — Multiple growing and fast-moving grass fires are forcing evacuations in Boulder County as strong winds — including a 110 mph gust — continue to blow through the area.

The Boulder County Office of Emergency Management is telling residents to evacuate if they see fire. The OEM instructs residents to go east or north. All of Superior and Louisville has been evacuated.

The fires have been reported in the following areas:

North of the City of Boulder. The closest intersection is N. Foothills Highway and Middle Fork Road. The name of this fire is the Middle Fork Fire.
South of the City of Boulder. The closest intersection is S. Cherryvale Road and Marshall Drive. The name of this fire is the Marshall Fire.
Near CU Boulder South Campus at Highway 36 and Table Mesa Drive

Denver7 is working to confirm the locations of other fires.

This is so catastrophic that I cannot even comprehend what has happened. The entire towns of Superior and Louisville were evacuated earlier.

Now being reported that the entire town of Superior is on fire. The news is now reporting over 600 homes lost in the area. The winds were reported above 110 mph earlier, but have subsided somewhat now.

The only good news is that there are no reported injuries or deaths.

So far. I have a nephew about eight miles away and a brother in law about ten miles away from the edge of the fire.

Reporting now that Louisville is on fire with the police station a complete loss.

One small glimmer of hope is that the winds have calmed to a light breeze. May that remain so.

ETA: Mandatory evacuations for the western portions of Broomfield.

Colorado Wildfires: What We Know
The fires on Thursday burned at least 500 homes and forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/31/us/c ... fires.html
The fires began on Thursday morning and spread with astonishing speed across suburban neighborhoods in Boulder County. The authorities said at least 1,600 acres had burned by Thursday evening.

The specific cause was not clear as of early Friday morning. Sheriff Joe Pelle of Boulder County said on Thursday that he believed the fires had been started by downed power lines.

The wildfires came unusually late in the year for Colorado, where severe drought conditions in recent months have set the stage for such blazes to spread with ease. And they capped a year of intense wildfires and other extreme weather events across the American West.

The fires on Thursday burned at least 500 homes, a shopping complex and a hotel, the authorities said. No deaths or major injuries had been reported as of early Friday. But some residents lost power, and others likened the damage to that of a 2013 wildfire that, at the time, was the most destructive in Colorado’s history.

I went to high school in north Arvada (Wadsworth & 80th), and a number of my classmates are either evacuating or opening their homes to evacuees.
