There is a bumper crop of Trump books, but one caught my eye: "Authoritarian Nightmare: Trump and His Followers" by John Dean and Bob Altemeyer. Altemeyer, a Canadian psychologist, wrote a pre-Trump book that I found insightful, "The Authoritarians" (that you can download for free).

I'll leave my impression when I finish it.

I read Altemeyer's summary of Trump's coup attempt. Excellent. In a nutshell, he concludes that Trump's coup failed because he is too stupid to plan an effective coup.

And we are talking about John Dean of Watergate fame, I assume?

Yep. He has written several books on authoritarians, at least one with Altemeyer. Well worth the reads.

I’ve mentioned this before:

John Dean holds a special place in my heart. When I was at FireDogLake, we read his book ‘Conservatives Without a Conscience’ and he came online to do a book salon with us. What started out as an hour-long discussion turned into 2.5, until he absolutely had to go. We weren’t done, though.

We kept submitting questions after he left and he answered them all later that night. In all he spent about 5 hours with us dirty fucking hippies and our great questions. Emptywheel was there, as I remember.
