Slowly more and more of the people and news organizations I followed on Twitter are showing up on Mastodon. It is becoming useful at last.

@TexasObserver @TucsonSentinel @restofworld Create Mastodon Instances

We've entered a new stage in the evolution of Mastodon social media. Trailblazing media organizations are creating their own instances–something impossible on other social media platforms.

Recently publications like @RollingStone, @ProPublica and @sfgate established official accounts, now a few pioneers are taking the next step.

I bet many (most?) of the media companies will open a Mastadon node operated by themselves. It gives them some control over what happens in their realm. Will require a certain amount of local moderation. I guess when sufficient companies move this way then automated moderation tools will be available in this ecosphere. The advertiser brokers will need to invent a fresh way of selling and distribution on this medium.

The scales have tipped and I guess I will open other social media accounts to replace Twitter. Looks like Post and Mastadon.

My emphasis is:
- real news from solid platforms and/or journalists following best practices
- industry news in pharma and cancer treatment
- science journal publications from known scientists and research groups focussed on molecular biology, genetics, etc.
- open science and open data groups
- AI and automation topics
- pro democracy and political posts

One great tool of Twitter was the ability to assemble lists for topics and click on those specialized news feeds, so it would require that there is a critical mass (and a similar tool) of persons sharing content on topics I care about.

The first time I tried Twitter, I didn’t get it at all and didn’t have a newsfeed at all. Being disenchanted I left for a couple of years. Now I am sad that it seems time to replace it.

Given my priorities, what platform and such such I consider. Mastadon has some server things that I’ve noted people talk about but haven’t grokked what it all means,,,.?

So Seth Abramson is one of the sloppiest public thinkers I have ever encountered, who circa 2016 helped invent the rhetorical style of the buckle-up-for-some-politics Twitter mega-thread. He has advised people who listen to him that they should avoid "Mastodon" (he means the Fediverse I think).

I cannot overstate how much this means we are doing something right over here.

One problem with Mastodon is brand recognition. M websites have all different domain names, so re-posting off M to third parties like our TFB does not show immediatly anything about the Trust Factor the Twitter name had prior to the murky Musk guy. A rather costly solution would be that Mastadon were to build and offer their own top level domain, dot.mastadon.

Email checks at least half of those boxes. If you couple it with a good offline email client, you also have a verifiable paper trail complete with IP addresses and permanent file storage. Mine dates back to 1997. I can search it in seconds. Thanks Eudora!

Looking at the table of various platforms, I think it means users can run/host their own server. Such as @toad.social. I'm just guessing but because IRC is listed as having User Run Instances -- which, back in the 90s, I had one.

IRC is a dead thing, but I am totally going to have to research this Cybiko Wireless Handheld Computer for Teens (2000). Never heard of it, but then I was not a teen in 2000. And it appears to be feature rich!

Back then, mIRC (the very popular client software/shareware--which could also launch a server mode) was constantly open on my Winbloz computers.

I went with Post bc it's easier. When I have time, I'll deal with Mastodon. I think my post address is @matlachakate. Honestly, I'm not sure. Someone let me know if it shows. I tried to find myself right after signing up but maybe it takes a while to work through.

They're the different servers (instances) that you can sign up for. Each server is run by a user or group of users. This allows for different servers to focus on different topics. For example, I have accounts on 3 servers - one for my spiritual and general chat, one for political stuff and one for disabled people.

In you Mastodon client, there are three feeds that are pre-set up, the Home feed which shows you only posts from people you follow, the Local feed which shows you all of the posts for your specific instance, and the Federated feed that shows you all posts from every server that connects into Mastodon. Personally, I rarely read the Federated feed, I mind enough people to follow from the boosts (retweets) people I follow send and fem my local feed.

I hope that was actually helpful and not more confusing. Mastodon is a great place, but it does usually take a few days to get the hang of everything!

BTW: What's your username at toad social? I'd like to follow you if you don't mind :)
