I think the midterms hold the key. If the Rethuglicans lose a seat or two in the Senate; if the Democrats can hang onto a slim majority in the House; if the state and local elections don't have major upsets, then I then the GOP will take a deep breath and decide that tfg is yesterday's news and abandon him for all intents and purposes. They'll cite his ongoing legal troubles are a distraction from their platform. His toadies like McCarthy will do an about face.

If he is indicted, I could see the DOJ offering a plea whereby he is given home confinement under "compassionate release" if he pleads guilty to at least one of the charges. The underlying assumption with compassionate release is that if he is too ill for incarceration, he is too ill to run for public office.

It will be interesting to see what comes out of New York and Georgia.

With all due respect, humblescribe, I suspect that no matter how badly Republicans do in the midterms, ANY attempt to disown and disassociate with Trump will be met with violence by his supporters.

He spent the time since 2015 when he came down the escalator promoting white supremacist violence. He retweeted SIXTY something QAnon posts on his #PravdaSocial on Tuesday. He is headed to a place where his only perceived option is to have his base rise up in revolution.

But not enough will show up to make any headway. Instead, what happened in the past couple weeks will escalate and become a more serious problem - lone wolves attacking FBI offices, and maybe even some small-stuff militias will try something. Stuff like that, escalating as it becomes clear that GOP voters are done with him.

When the base has no hope and violence in its heart, it will turn on them, maybe worse than it attacks liberals. Hay wait, didn't Fox News tell us that BLM and Antifa got away with burning down entire US cities? We should be able to get away with even more than they did!

As y'all know very well, one bomb made from simple materials can be enormously destructive. And assault rifles ...

And I think the more the few remaining "mainstream" Republicans try to separate themselves from Trump, the more violent and crazy his supporters will be. This is how Earthlings behave - they can be really creative and entertaining, but too many of them are dangerous and crazy. So dangerous, and so crazy.

And it might even work. After the first couple of Republicans die for distancing themselves from Trump, the rest might decide to shut up and give him the damn nomination.

Republicans are not known for their great moral courage.

He's a very distant cousin. We share a last name and it is quite uncommon, so he is related. The family came from a village in Norfolk that is our last name, before some headed to Ireland when James paid a visit in the 1600s.

I would wonder if home confinement and its corresponding medical implications would remove his ability to live at Mar-A-Lago, since his ability to live there is predicated on the legal fiction that he is a full-time employee of the joint, and hence entitled to on-site housing; rather than being a 'club member' entitled only to the more limited use of the place as a club.

But probably not, since, as Foggy notes, there's a moral courage factor involved and the folks who would need to make these decisions at the more local level strictly lack same.
