It's funny how you don't think about these folks until you see the notice of their deaths. Pat Carroll appeared in a lot of television shows along with being the voice of Ursula in The Little Mermaid.

A lot of comments are made about her being the "space secretary," but if you watch as often as I have you notice she was called on use a lot of skills - putting the communications console back together, taking over other bridge stations like the helm, asked for her opinion or in many cases offering it. There's one scene where she takes over with an air of authority like she manage the helm with the best of them. Loved her NASA work too.

Nichelle Nichols was a particular inspiration for Mae Jamison who became the first African-American woman to travel to space. She was a mission specialist on the Endeavor.

I am so very sad.
Long-time and legendary broadcaster Vin Scully died Tuesday, the Dodgers have announced. He was 94 years old.

He was a poet, a keen observer of humanity. Like tfg, he came up with nicknames for so many players. Unlike tfg, his nicknames and anecdotes were kind and illuminating. One I’ll never forget: Joaquin “Where’s My Head At” Andujar because of his reputation for being a flake, and because when he played in Atlanta he missed the team bus from the hotel to the stadium. The hotel got him a car, but he didn’t make it to the game on time because, in spite of being able to see the stadium from the road he couldn’t figure out how to get there. He just kept driving around and around the stadium.

Indeed. They are starting to take away bits and pieces of my childhood.

Vinnie could weave a story like a tapestry. Perhaps one of his best attributes was that he wasn't a homer. He never used first person plural*; instead using third person.

*Exception: in 1959 when the Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Braves in a 3-game playoff for the NL Pennant. After they recorded the final out, Vinnie blurted, "We go to Chicago! We go to Chicago!" They dispatched the Go-Go White Sox in six.

I haz a sad today.

Another thing I always loved about Vinnie: He never talked after a big moment. He let the moment have its moment.

When Will Mays hit 715 homers, he uttered his signature “it’s a long fly to deep left field …and it is outta here!” And then he shut up. He let the crowd’s roar and the pride of his teammates speak.

Just announced, Republican Rep from Indiana Jackie Walorski was killed in a car crash today. I don't know anything further, but thought I'd mention it.

my representative. Would have liked her replaced of course, but not this way. Two very young staffers and the driver of the other car were also killed. R.I.P.

My heart goes out to all who perish in such a tragic way, and to the medics who have to run the calls. Heartbreaking work I can tell you. :crying:

Albert Woodfox, held in solitary confinement for 43 years, dies aged 75
Woodfox, member of ‘Angola Three’, was wrongfully convicted of 1972 murder of Louisiana prison guard and released only in 2016

Ed Pilkington in New York
Thu 4 Aug 2022 20.52 BST

Albert Woodfox, who is thought to have been held in solitary confinement longer than any individual in US history, having survived 43 years in a 6ft x 9ft cell in one of America’s most brutal prisons, has died aged 75.

Woodfox’s death was made public on Thursday by his long-term lawyers, George Kendall and Carine Williams, and by his brother Michael Mable. They said he had died from complications caused by Covid.
