Republicans are underestimating the number of people who are LGBTQ or have family who are. We were on a recent cruise. I know that we and the friend we were traveling with have trans and lesbian in our families. We became close friends with two couples during the cruise. Just talking, both those families also had trans or LGBTQ in their families. Not all families, of course, are accepting, but our four families were all supportive. Many are.

I went to high school with a guy who considers himself a moderate Republican Catholic. He announced his eldest was having surgery, how proud he was, and that he wanted his friends to wish her well. No idea what his feelings may have been before, but he was clear what they are and that he's 100 percent supportive.

Miss Argentina and Miss Puerto Rico reveal they secretly got married

Scott Stump
Wed, November 2, 2022 at 7:55 PM·

A pair of international pageant winners are showing love knows no boundaries.

Miss Argentina 2020, Mariana Varela, 26, and Miss Puerto Rico 2020, Fabiola Valentin, 22, wrote on Instagram that they got married on Oct. 28 after having kept their relationship out of the public eye.

"After deciding to keep our relationship private, we opened the doors on a special day. 28/10/22," the couple wrote in a joint message on both of their Instagram pages.

TODAY has reached out to the couple for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

An accompanying 30-second video shows candid moments between the two at the beach and on a boat ride. The video also includes scenes from their engagement, with rose petals, red-and-white balloons, and gold and silver balloons spelling "Marry Me?" in the background as they share a kiss.

Valentin is then seen putting an engagement ring on Varela. They later show off similar diamond rings after the wedding.

Same-sex marriage bill heads for Senate passage over opposition from Cornyn and Cruz
The bill would provide federal recognition and interstate portability of same-sex marriages, but it stops short of guaranteeing a right to such marriages.

BY STEPHEN NEUKAM
NOV. 16, 2022 17 HOURS AGO

Republican U.S. Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz tried Wednesday to block a Senate vote to explicitly enshrine federal recognition of same-sex marriages, but 12 GOP lawmakers joined Democrats to clear the way for the bill’s passage.

The Respect for Marriage Act would repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which barred the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that law unconstitutional in 2013. The high court went further in 2015 and ruled in Obergefell v. Hodges that states can’t ban same-sex marriages, declaring that gay, lesbian and bisexual Americans have a constitutional right to marry.

The core provisions of the Respect for Marriage Act would be relevant only if the Supreme Court reverses that decision in the way it revoked a constitutional right to abortion this summer.

The bill would not force states that currently have unenforceable bans on same-sex marriage, like Texas, to offer marriage certificates to gay, lesbian and bisexual couples if Obergefell is overturned. But it would mandate that the state recognize a same-sex marriage that occurred in a state where it is legal. The vote on Wednesday in the Senate clears the way for it to pass the chamber easily. It will then return to the House, where members will consider the amendments made in the Senate. The House passed the original version of the bill in July.

Cruz blasted Republican Senators who voted with Democrats to give the measure the 60 votes it needed to overcome a potential filibuster in the upper chamber.

Cornyn told reporters on Tuesday that he would not support the bill because gay marriage “is already a Constitutional right.”

Senate passes landmark Respect for Marriage Act in bipartisan vote
BY MELISSA QUINN

UPDATED ON: NOVEMBER 29, 2022 / 6:26 PM / CBS NEWS

Washington — The Senate on Tuesday night approved historic legislation that provides federal protections for same-sex marriages, moving the measure closer to President Biden's desk for his signature in the final weeks of the Democratic-controlled Congress.

The bill, called the Respect for Marriage Act, passed the evenly divided upper chamber 61 to 36, with 12 Republicans joining their Democratic colleagues in support of the proposal. It needed 60 votes to pass. The legislation garnered support from a wider margin of GOP senators after it was amended to include provisions protecting religious liberty. The bill also protects interracial marriage.

"What a great day," Schumer said on the Senate floor after the bill's passage. "What a great day."

Before proceeding to final passage of the marriage equality bill, senators rejected three amendments proposed by Republican Sens. Mike Lee of Utah, James Lankford of Oklahoma and Marco Rubio of Florida. With the approval by the upper chamber, the marriage equality plan returns to the House for a vote and, if cleared by the Democratic-led chamber as expected, will head to Mr. Biden to be signed into law. The White House supports the Respect for Marriage Act and has encouraged its passage by Congress.

Forty-seven Republicans joined Democrats this summer to pass an earlier version of the legislation.

The Respect for Marriage Act was introduced after the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in June, unraveling the constitutional right to an abortion. Concerned that other Supreme Court decisions, including those that protected the right to same-sex marriage, could be in jeopardy, Democrats moved to enshrine the right to marriage equality into federal law.

This is welcome news! But I guess there were carve-outs necessary. I have not read the bill but pizza shops can't be compelled to cater a wedding, or something?

I’m glad it’s done, but there are lots of ignorant comments from folks on our side.

They don’t know it’s already passed the Senate.

They don’t know that’s only thanks to enough Republican votes to defeat the filibuster.

So there are screams of why we can’t just codify Roe the same way, the Dems haven’t done enough, etc.

Hard to achieve goals when your own people don’t/won’t bother to understand how the system works.

Discouraging :(

Texas is also threatening very broadly defined bans on "drag" performances SHOW LESS

Other bills attempt to capitalize on the moral panic around #drag queens, simultaneously using it as a way to attack both #LGBTQIA culture as a whole and the ability of #transgender people to participate in public life. HB 643 from Representative Jared Patterson broadly seeks to ban anyone from “performing” in public when #children are present if the performer’s clothing doesn’t match conservative norms for their assigned #gender at birth. It’s so broadly written, in fact, that experts are concerned it could even ban #trans people from performing at major league sporting events or all-ages concerts. Venues found to be in violation would face misdemeanor charges.

“That could literally mean a trans person doing standup at a comedy show would then turn it into a sexually oriented business,” @esqueer said.

The current Republican party:

1) You must live your life based on my beliefs. I am the boss of you.

2) You can't tell me how to live my life. No one is the boss of me.

That explains everything.

An Iowa Catholic diocese banned preferred pronouns and will force LGBTQ students to go to bathrooms of their biological sex. Advocates say the policy is part of a growing trend causing 'severe harm.'

  • An Iowa diocese has implemented a new "gender identity" policy that bans "preferred pronouns."
Policies like this are part of a growing trend in US Catholic dioceses, LGBTQ advocates said.
The policies are causing "severe harm" to transgender and non-binary youth, they said.
A Catholic diocese in Iowa has implemented a new "gender identity" policy that bans the use of "preferred pronouns" and puberty blockers and forces LGBTQ students, staff, and church members to utilize bathrooms associated with their biological sex.

LGBTQ advocates say policies like this are part of a growing trend among Catholic dioceses of the United States that are causing "severe harm" and damage to transgender and non-binary youth.

"There are many, many pitfalls to this," Marianne Duddy-Burke, the executive director of DignityUSA, a Catholic LGBTQ advocacy organization, told Insider on Tuesday.

"It just pushes kids with gender identity questions or gender dysphoria to the margins. It isolates them," Duddy-Burke said, adding that the policies can lead to both depression and anxiety. "It makes them think there's something wrong with them."

The policy from the Diocese of Des Moines — which includes 17 schools and 80 parishes in southwest Iowa — went into effect on Monday.

"These policies are established as binding for diocesan parishes, schools, organizations, and institutions of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Des Moines," the diocese said in a document laying out seven stipulations.

It adds that the policy "applies, but is not limited to, all Church employees, personnel, volunteers, and those entrusted to the care of the Church."

Under the policy, no one "may designate a 'preferred pronoun.'" The diocese said people "must use the bathroom or locker room that matches their biological sex" and "are to follow the dress code or uniform that accords with their biological sex." Participation in school or parish activities "must be consistent with the biological sex of the participant," the diocese said.

The diocese also barred using gender-affirming medical treatments like puberty blockers, saying, "no person is permitted to have on-site or to distribute any medications for the purpose of gender reassignment."

Anyone who may question their gender "should be guided to appropriate ministers and counselors," according to the policy.

LGBTQ advocates estimated that around two dozen of the 194 dioceses and archdioceses in the US have adopted similar policies in recent years. Among them are Wisconsin's Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin's Diocese of Milwaukee, and Nebraska's Diocese of Omaha.
