Drag storytellers grapple with growing threats by Republicans and far right
Drag story hours face protests and threats of violence amid push to erode LGBTQ rights in state legislatures across the US

Olivia Empson in New York
Thu 23 Mar 2023 08.00 GMT

In a sea of rainbow umbrellas, colorful hairstyles and even brighter costumes, Allison Towle loosely gripped on to her five-year-old daughter’s hand.

It was bright and cold in New York’s West Village, and the two were on their way out from a Drag Storytelling Hour.

Hosted by the state’s attorney general, Letitia James, at the LGTBQ+ community center, these events – popular nationally in the US – have become an informational way of exposing children to new books and ways of thinking. And the pair had a great time, planning to return.

“I want to teach her that she can wear whatever, love whoever, be whoever,” Towle said, patting the flower garland on top of her daughter’s blond hair.

But drag story hours are no longer simple in the US. They have been targeted by Republicans and the far right with protests and threats of violence and wild conspiracy theories around grooming and abuse. At the same time, there has been a concerted legislative push to erode LGBTQ rights in state legislatures across the US, an effort to remove LGBTQ literature from public libraries and rising acts of violence against the community.

So it was perhaps no surprise that James’s Greenwich Village event found itself picketed by far-right protesters. As chants coming from protesters who had gathered on the other side of the tree-lined street to the event grew louder and more aggressive – Towle’s grip on her child tightened.

Texas Judge Orders LGBTQ+ Books Be Returned to Public Libraries

CNN Wire
Sun, April 2, 2023 at 1:01 PM GMT+2
By Alaa Elassar, Taylor Romine and Andy Rose

(CNN) -- A federal judge in Texas ruled that at least 12 books removed from public libraries by Llano County officials, many because of their LGBTQ and racial content, must be placed back onto shelves within 24 hours, according to an order filed Thursday.

Seven residents sued county officials in April 2022, claiming their First and 14th Amendment rights were violated when books deemed inappropriate by some people in the community and Republican lawmakers were removed from public libraries or access was restricted.

The lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas in San Antonio claimed county officials removed books from the shelves of the three-branch public library system "because they disagree with the ideas within them" and terminated access to thousands of digital books because they could not ban two specific titles.

Books ordered to return to shelves include "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents" by Isabel Wilkerson, "They Called Themselves the K.K.K.: The Birth of an American Terrorist Group" by Susan Campbell Bartoletti and "Being Jazz: My Life as a (Transgender) Teen" by Jazz Jennings.

The library system also is required to reflect these books as available in their catalog and cannot remove any books for any reason while the case is ongoing, US District Judge Robert Pitman said in his order.

"Although libraries are afforded great discretion for their selection and acquisition decisions, the First Amendment prohibits the removal of books from libraries based on either viewpoint or content discrimination," Pitman said.

The fight to protect access to books comes amid a book banning boom, with an alarming increase in attempts to censor books in K-12 schools, universities and public libraries. Many of these efforts seek to pull books with LGBTQ characters or themes and are part of a broader, conservative-led movement to chisel away at the rights and status of LGBTQ Americans.

In Franklin, Tennessee, an LGBTQ pride festival meets fierce resistance

Mike Hixenbaugh and Daniel Arkin
Mon, April 10, 2023 at 4:00 PM GMT+2

For the past two years, thousands of people have descended on a public park in Franklin, Tennessee — a suburb 30 minutes outside Nashville — for an LGBTQ pride festival featuring live music, food trucks and crafts vendors. Clayton Klutts, the president of the Franklin Pride organization, viewed the event as a glowing symbol of how far a small, conservative community had come in terms of LGBTQ acceptance.

But this year, Franklin Pride’s attempts to obtain a city permit have been met with fierce resistance. What had been a procedural formality in past years has become a bitter flashpoint that mirrors similarly heated debates roiling the United States.

“The idea that we wouldn’t allow a pride event in the year 2023 is a little bit hard to fathom,” Klutts said. “It feels like we’re going backwards.”

The conflict came to a head during a public forum at City Hall late last month, one day after a 28-year-old shot and killed six people at a private Christian school in Nashville — a massacre that some on the right blamed on the suspect’s gender identity. More than 30 people, many of them wearing circular “Choose Decency” stickers, pleaded with Franklin’s mayor and the city board’s eight aldermen to deny the pride permit.

One mother claimed that the festival was part of a coordinated national movement to groom children, attack families and destroy America. A man read a passage from the Bible about resisting “sexual immorality.” Others baselessly linked homosexuality with pedophilia and cited the school shooting a day earlier as a reason to block the event.

“You think you are doing things based on laws,” a crying woman said, “but … you are letting Satan in. He will not take an inch. I promise you. He will take everything and it will not stop.”

Montana GOP caucus calls for censure of transgender lawmaker

Brooke Migdon
Wed, April 19, 2023 at 8:06 PM GMT+2

A group of Republicans in the Montana legislature have called for the immediate censure of Democratic Rep. Zooey Zephyr — the state’s first and only openly transgender legislator — after she told lawmakers on Tuesday that there will be “blood on your hands” if a bill to ban minors from accessing gender-affirming health care is approved by the state House.

“If you are forcing a trans child to go through puberty when they are trans, that is tantamount to torture. This body should be ashamed,” Zephyr said Tuesday during a floor debate over amendments to Montana’s Senate Bill 99, a wide-reaching bill that would prevent medical professionals from administering gender-affirming health care to transgender youths under 18.

“If you vote yes on this bill and yes on these amendments, I hope the next time there’s an invocation when you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands,” Zephyr said.

Responding to Zephyr during Tuesday’s floor debate, Montana House Majority Leader Sue Vinton (R) said the legislature will “not be shamed by anyone in this chamber. We are better than that.”

Gender-affirming health care for both transgender youths and adults is backed by most major medical organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

More than half of transgender and nonbinary young people in a recent survey said they had seriously considered suicide over the past year.

The Montana Freedom Caucus, a coalition of state House and Senate Republicans, called for the immediate censure of Zephyr, in a statement posted to the group’s social media late Tuesday. The group said she attempted to shame members of the legislature by using “inappropriate and uncalled-for language” during Tuesday’s floor debate.

“This kind of hateful rhetoric from an elected official is exactly why tragedies such as the Covenant Christian School shooting in Nashville occurred,” the group wrote in its statement, referring to a mass shooting in Tennessee last month that left six people dead, including three 9-year-old students.

Local authorities immediately after the shooting said they believed the suspect, 28-year-old Audrey Hale, who was fatally shot by police, was transgender. Nearly a month later, Hale’s gender identity remains unclear.

Republicans look to extend transgender restrictions to adults

Christopher Wilson·Senior Writer
Mon, April 17, 2023 at 11:28 PM GMT+2

The Republican-led backlash against rights and health care for transgender children is expanding to adults. Missouri’s Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey issued an emergency ruling Thursday that requires adults to receive 18 months of psychological therapy and to demonstrate “a persistent and intense pattern of gender dysphoria” before they are allowed to undergo gender-affirming care.

In a statement, Bailey said the ruling was “necessary due to the skyrocketing number of gender transition interventions.” Critics of the guidelines responded by saying that gender-affirming care has been shown to be medically effective.

“The Attorney General’s so-called emergency rule is based on distorted, misleading, and debunked claims and ignores the overwhelming body of scientific and medical evidence supporting this care,” the ACLU and Lambda Legal said in a joint statement.

https://apnews.com/article/transgender- ... 072d580a94
HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana’s House speaker on Thursday refused to allow a transgender lawmaker to speak about bills on the House floor until she apologizes for saying lawmakers would have “blood on their hands” if they supported a bill to ban gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth, the lawmaker said.

Rep. Zooey Zephyr, who was deliberately referred to using male pronouns by some conservative lawmakers demanding her censure, said she will not apologize, creating a standoff between the first-term state lawmaker and Republican legislative leaders.

Speaker Matt Regier refused to acknowledge Zephyr on Thursday when she wanted to comment on a bill seeking to put a binary definition of male and female into state code.

“It is up to me to maintain decorum here on the House floor, to protect the dignity and integrity,” Regier said Thursday. “And any representative that I don’t feel can do that will not be recognized.”

Regier said the decision came after “multiple discussions” with other lawmakers and that previously there have been similar problems.

OMG!!! We're watching The Three Stooges on MeTV and there's an episode (?) where the stooges are...dare I say it...dressed AS WOMEN!!! Won't someone think of the children???!!!????

They actually make pretty nice looking women, if I say so myself.

It was right after one of my fav episodes of Moe, Larry and Shemp. They're stowaways on a train and, while running from the conductor, they stop and gape at a man who turns out to be Curly, post stroke. He's hard to recognize bc he has the long, beautiful blond wavy hair that gave him his childhood nickname, but because of the stroke he's unable to walk so he's sitting on the train. He was able to do his trademark wooopwooopwoopwoopwoop and then everyone realizes who he is. Fun, fun, fun!!

(I know that last episode isn't LGBT-related, but it's such a fun bit I had to include it.

“I’ve accomplished my goals” - Lia Thomas wishes to transition back to male after feeling 'guilt'

Lia Thomas has been making headlines since coming out as a transgender athlete. Although a community of athletes has come out in support of her, many have criticized her for competing in the female category and blocking the titles from them.

In a recent interview with ALLOD Sports correspondent Skip Tetheludah, NCAA Champion Thomas came out saying she had achieved all her goals and now wishes to return as a male.
"I've accomplished my goals. I think I did all I set out to do. I won first place in the 500 and I dated a man as a woman. I think I’ve reached the end of this journey."
According to Lia Thomas, she has achieved all the milestones as a female swimmer and her journey has come to an end.

She recalled an event in which a female swimmer tied her for the fifth position for 200 yards. She even felt guilty about blocking the titles from female swimmers.

Dr. Joe Barron backed Thomas' decision and urged people to show some support and kindness for her. He shared that for Thomas to turn back to male, she had to stop the intake of estrogen and might require a sock stuffer.

Updated: Sportskeeda: Fact Check: Does Lia Thomas want to transition back to male? Viral article debunked:
Fact Check: The authenticity of the alleged interview cannot be verified since no other prominent source has reported it as of now and the article appears to be 'fake'. The website claims to have made some bold statements about the same, but no major news outlet has reported on it at the time of writing. The website in question seems to be misleading people into believing something that Lia Thomas didn't say anywhere on the record.

The article can be deemed fake because Thomas never spoke about being 'guilty' for transitioning. Even the source mentioned in the article, ALLOD Sports, cannot be found.

Justice Department Sues Tennessee Over Law That Blocks Medical Care For Trans Youth

The Biden administration filed the complaint against Tennessee’s SB1, alleging the new law violates the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause. The bill, which was signed by Republican Gov. Bill Lee last month, forbids minors from taking puberty blockers or receiving hormone therapies and from having surgeries that enable “a minor to identify with, or live as, a purported identity inconsistent with the minor’s sex.”

Any doctor who provides such care to their patients can by sued by a minor’s parent who did not consent to the treatment, and all ongoing treatments must end by March 31, 2024. The law is set to take effect on July 1 of this year.

“No person should be denied access to necessary medical care just because of their transgender status,” Assistant U.S. Attorney General Kristen Clarke said in a statement after the complaint was filed. “The right to consider your health and medically-approved treatment options with your family and doctors is a right that everyone should have, including transgender children, who are especially vulnerable to serious risks of depression, anxiety and suicide.”

The complaint follows a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal last week. The groups urged a court to block the law, saying the ban was forcing parents of transgender children to consider fleeing the state and was “creating a sense of desperation at the prospect of watching their children’s suffering resume and symptoms possibly worsen as they lose access to the care that has transformed their lives.”

The Tennessee law is the latest effort by Republicans to pass discriminatory state laws targeting the LGBTQ+ community. State legislatures have moved to limit medically necessary care to trans minors, block trans athletes from competing on school sports teams and bar drag performances across the nation in recent months. There are more than 450 anti-LGBTQ+ bills before lawmakers this year.

“Left unchallenged, it would prohibit transgender children from receiving health care that their medical providers and their parents have determined to be medically necessary,” Henry Leventis, the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, said of the new law in a statement. “In doing so, the law seeks to substitute the judgment of trained medical professionals and parents with that of elected officials and codifies discrimination against children who already face far too many obstacles.”

Lee argued Wednesday that the restrictive prohibitions were meant to protect children, pledging the state would fight to uphold the new restrictions.

“Tennessee is committed to protecting children from permanent, life-altering decisions,” the governor told CNN in a statement. “This is federal overreach at its worst, and we will work with Attorney General [Jonathan] Skrmetti to push back in court and stand up for children.”

Medical groups have long argued such bills are harmful to trans kids. The American Academy of Pediatrics has criticized lawmakers’ intervention in medical care, saying such laws interfere with doctors’ abilities to keep their patients healthy.

“The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that youth who identify as transgender have access to comprehensive, gender-affirming, and developmentally appropriate health care that is provided in a safe and inclusive clinical space,” the group said in 2021 when the GOP-led efforts first began to flourish. “These bills not only ignore these recommendations, they undermine them.”
