A guy asked this morning why the local Starbucks was closed. Someone else said they were only open from 9-1 because of staff shortages. It's in the middle of a low-traffic shopping center, about 3 parking spaces from a random stop sign, and literally within eyesight of 2 other (locally owned) coffee shops. And yes, she responded with "Thanks Joe Biden."

From what I understand, while we will not be sending any officials or other diplomats, our athletes will still be allowed to participate. I guess that's what they mean by "diplomatic boycott."

Biden, Warren back uprising against Trump bank regulator
The partisan battle erupted after the Democrats who make up the majority of the FDIC’s board voted to take public feedback on potential changes to the agency’s bank merger approval process.

The White House on Friday defended three Democratic board members at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. who moved to wrest control away from the banking agency's Republican chairman — a maneuver GOP lawmakers blasted as a “coup.”

The partisan battle erupted after the Democrats who make up the majority of the FDIC’s board voted to take public feedback on potential changes to the agency’s bank merger approval process. FDIC Chairman Jelena McWilliams, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, did not participate in the vote, and the FDIC in an official statement said the action was not valid.

The Biden administration is standing behind the board members who sidestepped McWilliams. Two are Biden appointees — Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Rohit Chopra and acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael Hsu — while the other, Martin Gruenberg, served as FDIC chair under former President Barack Obama.

“We do not think that the FDIC chair should try to block actions that the majority of the FDIC’s board of directors legitimately seek to pursue,” said a White House official who asked not to be named. “We support the board’s decision to move forward with its action here.”

The White House’s decision to back the three Democratic regulators will likely further inflame tensions with Republicans on Capitol Hill, who argue the end run around McWilliams violated the agency’s rules.

Biden’s approval is back up to 49% according to CNN, and 47% according to Fox.

Weird how that’s not being covered near as much as “BIDEN’S PLUMMETING POLL NUMBERS!”

I swear, reading this made me want to scream at WaPo, and it's normally my favorite newspaper. It's like "That headline, I do not think it means what you think it means."

Like, almost every person quoted in the article sang some song about "Don't like him, Let's Go Brandon, but let's see how he can fix my ruined life even though I vote constantly for people who screw me over and want to bar him from doing anything useful but I'll blame it on him anyway."
But the sunshine aye shall light the sky,
As round and round we run;
And the truth shall ever come uppermost,
And justice shall be done.

Despite GOP efforts, Lucy Koh confirmed as the first Korean American federal appeals judge

Most recently, the Senate confirmed the country’s first Korean American woman to serve as a U.S. federal appeals court judge. After being appointed by President Joe Biden, Lucy Koh was confirmed by a vote of 50-45 to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on Monday.

Koh was formerly a U.S. district judge in the Northern District of California. That position made her the first Asian American U.S. district judge and the first U.S. district judge of Korean descent in the U.S.

According to HuffPost, Koh’s confirmation brings Biden’s appointment list to 10 confirmed appeals court judges and 29 lifetime federal judges. He’s confirmed more judges than decades’ worth of past presidents within their first year in office. With her confirmation, 53-year-old Koh now has a lifetime seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit.

According to KCBS Radio, Koh was previously nominated to the 9th Circuit court by President Barack Obama in 2016. However, her appointment was blocked by Sen. Mitch McConnell. Her disapproval by Republicans thus comes as no surprise. On Monday, every Republican voted against confirming her to the appeals court seat. Despite this, Koh was confirmed and picked to be a part of the court system which is dominated by white, male conservatives.

While this is true generally, Koh will be sitting on the 9th, which isn't so dominated.

This 538 article notes Biden's more diverse nominees, with a big caveat: Biden's successes are primarily in blue states. Meaning red-state judges simply aren't retiring (and, possibly, red-state senators are jamming the nomination process).

F.D.A. Will Permanently Allow Abortion Pills by Mail
The decision will broaden access to medication abortion, an increasingly common method, but many conservative states are already mobilizing against it.

By Pam Belluck
Dec. 16, 2021
Updated 7:37 p.m. ET

The federal government on Thursday permanently lifted a major restriction on access to abortion pills. It will allow patients to receive the medication by mail instead of requiring them to obtain the pills in person from specially certified health providers.

The decision, by the Food and Drug Administration, comes as the Supreme Court is considering whether to roll back abortion rights or even overturn its landmark 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade that made abortion legal nationwide.

The F.D.A.’s action means that medication abortion, an increasingly common method authorized in the United States for pregnancies up to 10 weeks’ gestation, will become more available to women who find it difficult to travel to an abortion provider or prefer to terminate a pregnancy in their homes. It allows patients to have a telemedicine appointment with a provider who can prescribe abortion pills and send them to the patient by mail.

Earlier this year, for the duration of the pandemic, the F.D.A. temporarily lifted the in-person requirement on mifepristone, the first of two drugs used to end a pregnancy. The decision to make this change permanent is likely to deepen the already polarizing divisions between conservative and liberal states on abortion. In 19 states, mostly in the South and the Midwest, telemedicine visits for medication abortion are banned, and these and other conservative states can be expected to pass other laws to further curtail access to abortion pills.

Joe Biden on Saturday commemorated the 49th anniversary of the car crash that killed his first wife and infant daughter, visiting their graves at Saint Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic church in Delaware, his home state.

Neilia Biden and her daughter, Naomi, were killed just after Delaware voters elected Biden to the Senate in 1972. Their car was broadsided while they were en route to pick up a Christmas tree. Beau and Hunter Biden, aged four and three, survived serious injury.

The crash became a defining moment that shaped Joe Biden’s persona and political career, through 35 years in the Senate, eight years as vice-president to Barack Obama and now close to one year as president himself.

It can't be easy to decide to part with a beloved member of the family like that. It sounds like they've tried to handle it in a very responsible way, and that they know the family he will be going to, so they'll be able to get updates on how he's doing.
