Hi, thrilled we're back. Thanks Foggy and sorry this has been such a headache.

Since we're back to square one, I'm going with my original avatar, Slim Cognito from the Ratchet and Clank video game series.

And I mean no disrespect to SlimSloSlider. Just wanted to make sure you guys knew it was me.

Just an FYI, Hub's second surgery tor repair his torn retina looks to be successful. We won't know how successful for a few more weeks but he's already light years ahead of his first surgery result which, quite honestly, was a total failure.

Also, can I bitch that I was this close to 10,000 posts. Damn the bad luck.

You may.

And I will join in to lament that I was "this close" to 5,000 posts.

Oh, and hi! <3

I read that and wondered where you saw us dancing. Hubs is a great dancer. It's what initially caught my eye. (think John Travolta, but Urban Cowboy or Michael, not SNF) However, playing Honky Tonk Bodonkadonk and dancing around the living room at 7 a.m. is grounds for divorce. He's been warned.

My hubby is a great dancer too, also!!!! We learnt during SNF days! 7 a.m. works better for hubby and me, except for Honky Tonk Badonkadonk. My hips can't move like that any more. :D

Isn't it the best? Hubs still does most of his moves, although he had to give up the splits a couple of decades ago. He also does a mean James Brown impersonation.

If I hadn't mentioned it, I was adopted at birth. I won the family lottery and was always very content with the people I shared my house with. People were always pestering me, don't you want to know this or that but I never did, other than a curiosity about my family's health history. Still, it wasn't enough for me pursue to it.

I had a friend who had a bad experience after finding her biological family. My older brother (adopted at an earlier time) did meet his biological mother.* It was a heckuva story, even made the Kansas City Star, due to some odd coincidences.

I have a cousin (adopted family, natch) who is big into genealogy and she was always after me to check out Ancestry.com. I asked her to check my adopted family instead, because I was always told my father was of Scottish descent and mom British and German. I'd chosen to identify as Scottish and I was stickin' to it.

Then Cuz told me she'd ordered me a kit and it was coming to my house. For her, would I do this? I did and signed up at the website making her my surrogate and pretty much forgot about it. She got the results, did her thing and told me that I did have some Scottish DNA** and that my biological parents were probably from TN.

My brother told me how he'd gotten his orig BC and I should give it a shot. I figured, WTH, I've come this far so I filled out the form, sent in my $15 and waited and waited and waited. There was no guarantee they'd even find it so I'd given up and figured it was $15 down the drain (they charge for the research, not the certificate).

Then, earlier this week, it came. I learned, from the social history paper, that my biological father was married and would not be involved. Thus, there was no father info on the paper, nothing, zilch, zero. That entire section hadn't even been printed out. I assume they had a special adopted baby BC for just that situation.

Anyhoo, I scanned the BC and sent it to Cuz, and she was on it in a flash. And guess where (biological) mom lived her entire life? Adams Tennessee. She passed back in 2010 at the age of 87. Apparently she never married or had any other children. She had been a WAC during the war. I'm sure Cuz is trying to dig up more info but that's all I know for now. I hope she had a happy life. Cuz sent me lots of newspaper articles from her local paper, including a jr college grad class pic, which is how I obtained the cropped pix currently as my avatar. I figured it was the least I could do.

To be clear, I never felt any ill will towards her. I understand she did what she felt was right for me and, at least in my case, she was right. I had a great childhood, thanks to her. Cheers and sleep well, Myrnalynn.

*His father wanted nothing to do with the experience but it was fun to see his photo, the spitting image of my brother.
**Back in the day, when they were plenty of babies at the Baby Store, they would try to match the adoptive parent's ethnicity with the baby. Sounds like they did a pretty good job.

I should add, in case anyone is wondering how I was adopted in KCMO when my mother lived her entire life in a tiny town in northern TN - I recently found out KC was a clearing house for adoption. Thousands (tens of, hundreds of?) of women hopped on the train and headed to Union Station in Kansas City where they were met by a nurse who escorted them to whichever Home for Unwed Mothers they'd chosen.

There's a book about it called Mansion on A Hill.

Although her father had a name reasonably common in England and Scotland, my wife's mother had always been told she was of Scottish descent and was proud of it. When we started looking into genealogy (the BYU FamilySearch is a pretty amazing free resource), we discovered that she was really a mishmash of English, German, Irish and Swiss ancestry (with perhaps a bit of Scottish tossed in). However, as a true Scot by affiliation and attitude, MIL is also stickin' to it.

A sister-in-law who's interested in genealogy emailed me a few weeks ago. It had been discovered that hubby's grandfather had fathered a baby girl in West Virginia back in the 30s. He had a wife and three boys here in PA. The mother had also never married or had any other children and has since died without ever admitting to anyone who the father was. DNA research is what made the determination. The aunt my husband never knew he had is alive and living in Virginia.

Tuesday I undergo the rite of passage known as cataract surgery. I'll only have the right eye done (for now) as I'm legally blind in the left and, with Hubs still struggling with his retinal surgery aftermath, the doc said the left eye could wait.

I decided to use our stimulus check towards upgrading to the laser version because it's my only useful eye and I wanted to baby it. When it's finally time to do lefty, I'll stick with the standard procedure.

Wish me luck!

(I know it's a very simple procedure and the laser simplifies it even more, but both my brother and mother had complications and none of us are biologically related so I'm a bit apprehensive. However, they both turned out fine in the end.)
