A long weekend while hubs is hospitalized seems like a good plan, especially since you won’t be going anywhere for a while after he comes home. Enjoy the break - and the memories you’ll make. :bighug:

Love, hugs and good vibes to you both!

Yeah, and what Patagoniagirl went through ... it's sad that we have a ... a fund of people who have been through Hell and came out the other side. But you can find support from your friends here. :bighug:

I think most people come out of Hell and into the other side. I've been there. It's just so hard to see the other side before you are in it.

I've started to write this several times but had to get up and walk away.

Bad news. Very bad news.

Picking up from the bone marrow biopsy, we had to wait two weeks for results. About one week into that time frame, Hubs crashed. I wanted to take him to the ER but he refused so the next day I got him back to the Cancer Center where they took labs and his hemoglobin was down to 7 (low normal for adult men is 14). After nine months of slowly dropping hemoglobin, it had dropped further in two weeks than it had in nine months. BUT, his white cell count was still within normal range and that's the leukemia marker. Until that shows, they look for other diseases that cause anemia or are even anemia based like thalassemia.

He didn't get any improvement from transfusion #1. At the next blood draw, his anemia was down to 7 again but this time his WBC count had risen to just above normal. That was a kick in the gut.

Forgive me for repeating some details but it's easier for me to keep my thoughts straight.

The next week, (the week were were supposed to get test results on Friday), I got a call moving it to Wednesday. I knew immediately why. She sat us down and told us it was Acute Myeloid Leukemia, the worst of the leukemias, an especially aggressive version. By then his WBC count had "exploded" (her words). She wanted him packed off to Moffitt within the week. She prescribed him hydroxyurea, a very powerful drug intended to keep him WBCs from skyrocketing, but there could be very bad side effects.

I had a hard time finding the drug in stock, so it was one day before I was able to secure the 'script. He took his first pill Friday, got very ill that night. Doctor's office sent out an anti-emetic to take 30 minutes before so Saturday went pretty well. Sunday was not bad until late afternoon when he started having low o2, not horrifically low for someone with leukemia, but concerning to me. Also, a nonproductive cough. But he had one last blood draw at the local cancer ctr on Monday. By the time I got him to the local center, he was so pale, they immediately put him on o2 nasal cannula and sent me to the ER where they admitted him and histology showed he was having an adverse reaction to the "poison pill" as Hubs lovingly named it.

He's been in the hospital for three days now waiting for the poison to work its way out of his system, it has a fairly long half-life so probably a few more days. He was breathing much better today and able to sit in the chair. I was thrilled to see him perked up. Although, recovering from the allergic reaction meant he wasn't getting treatment for the leukemia.

Then the doctor came in. He was very straightforward, and pointed out it was his ethical responsibility not to sugarcoat anything. Hubs has AML, which we knew, but what we didn't know is that there was a marker showing he had a mutation (forget the name/number) but it's an aggressive mutation to a disease that is already very aggressive and if they couldn't get him into treatment right away, he may only have a few weeks. He would contact Moffitt, a different doctor, also an AML specialist but also a specialist in this particular mutation and Hubs best, really only, chance was a clinical trial, if one was available. He said he'd get to work on contacting that doctor today and if one isn't available, they'll immediately start a less aggressive treatment but that treatment was only a band aid with the intention of buying him time until a trial comes up.

Excuse me while I go vomit.

Slim, oh no. I’m so so sorry. Wrapping you in love from afar.

Can someone from his or your family come for support? Just one person, he probably doesn't want any but you need some support, dear.
