Oh gosh. The NIN song "Hurt" has been covered by many... I have seen them perform that song stage live. I have seen Bowie live (but not this song). I never saw Johnny Cash live but pretty sure him wanting to cover this song was not about his dead wife.
I was pointing out that he did the cover no to long after her death, his reason was because his own health was failing from complications from diabetes...
"He sewed his eyes shut because he is afraid to see, He tries to tell me what I put inside of me
He's got the answers to ease my curiosity, He dreamed a god up and called it Christianity"

Why do you say that? :confuzzled:
In interviews, he actually said it was about HIM facing his own mortality - and expressing admiration for a new generation of song writers.

ETA: or maybe an alternate take on it: "It really upset me, and it really affected me": the story of Johnny Cash's haunting Hurt
What changed his opinion, and what ultimately lifted Hurt to an entirely different level, was the video for it. Directed by Mark Romanek, it unfolded like a four-minute mini-biography, blending archival footage, home movies, and a performance as stark as the song itself.

“When we dropped in the first clip of Johnny riding the train, we got chills,” recalled Romanek, who won both a Grammy and Country Music Association award for the video. “There was something about the juxtaposition of Johnny as a young, vibrant man and Johnny towards the end of his life that was really powerful.”

“It really upset me, and it really affected me,” Rubin told National Public Radio. “I thought it was beautiful, but it was unlike any video I’d ever seen before. It was so extreme that it really took my breath away – and not in a good way. I didn’t know how to handle it. It was just overwhelming.”

A king without a sword
A land without a king
A truth without a voice
One song left to sing
One song to sing

A wise man told me there's something you should know
The way you judge a man is to look into his soul
And you'll soon see everything

A voice from the past cried, "Give peace a chance"
He paid our price now he's free at last
Imagine, we called him a dreamer
How many times must good men die?
How many tears will the children cry?
'Til they suffer no more sadness
Stop the madness
Oh, stop the madness

If ashes are ashes and dust is dust
At our journey's end then return we must
To the sands of the shore
White doves in flight
Peace to all
But tell me why the peacemakers fall
Must we bury anymore?

The hush of the crowd as the horse rode by
A black lace veil hid the tears from her eyes
And we all wept in silence
How many times must good men die?
How many times will the children cry?
'Til they suffer no more sadness
Oh, stop the madness
Oh, stop all the madness

I love the poeticness of those lines - they're just beautifully turned.

Spotify suggested this song to me a couple months ago and it wound up on my permanent play list. The first half, I love the lyrics, and the guitar work in the 2nd half is just fun! I've always liked the sound of Southern Rock, but haven't listened to a lot of it because the good old boy lyrics tend to drive me nuts, but this one's cool :)

Thanks for posting that - I'd been wondering if I was right in hearing three guitarists :) They have a great live sound - very clean. I may have to check out some of their other stuff, too.

Kinda makes me miss playing guitar, though. It's one of the things I've had the hardest time losing. :crying: :crying: :crying: I never could solo to save my life, but I bet I could have done pretty well with the more melodic passages in that jam at the end where they were all playing together. (Alex Lifeson once said one of the most important things about soloing is to not be afraid of playing something that sounds bad or silly, but I just never had that level of self-confidence)

Since we were talking about Tim Roth on the What Are You Watching thread. Here is where the theme music comes from of Lie To Me. His name is Ryan Star performing it acoustically.

White Rabbit on banjo played like a mandolin. One of a kind.

Oh wait. Someone decided they liked it better on Spanish guitar. And a banjo. And mandolin. In cosplay. Mkay. I guess they couldn't make up their mind.

I'm not disclosing any names, but I think this song is an homage to James Brown.

He wakes up in the morning
Does his teeth bite to eat and he's rolling
Never changes a thing
The week ends, the week begins

She thinks, we look at each other
Wondering what the other is thinking
But we never say a thing
And these crimes between us grow deeper

Take these chances
Place them in a box until a quieter time
Lights down, you up and die

Goes to visit his mommy
She feeds him well his concerns
He forgets them
And remembers being small
Playing under the table and dreaming

Take these chances
Place them in a box until a quieter time
Lights down, you up and die

Driving in on this highway
All these cars and upon the sidewalk
People in every direction
No words exchanged
No time to exchange

When all the little ants are marching
Red and black antennas waving
They all do it the same
They all do it the same way
Candyman teasing the thoughts of a
Sweet tooth tortured by the weight loss
Programs cutting the corners
Loose end, loose end, cut, cut

On the fence, could not to offend
Cut, cut, cut, cut

Take these chances
Place them in a box until a quieter time
Lights down, you up and die

Lights down, you up and die
