While working on some vocal music (to keep my own voice and musicianship up to snuff) I looked up a recording of O du mein holder Abendstern from Wagner's Tannhäuser to see how others interpret it (I first did this aria back in college but that was a while ago though I really wish I had the breadth in the voice I have now but that comes with physical growth). I came across a recording by Dmitri Hvorostovsky (RIP a few years ago :crying: ). It is too good not to share.

For those who want the English text
O you, my fair evening star
English Translation © Richard Stokes

Wolfram:
Dusk covers the land like a premonition of death,
Wraps the valley in her dark mantle;
The soul that longs for those heights
Dreads to take its dark and awful flight.
Then you appear, O loveliest of stars,
And shed your gentle light from afar;
Your sweet glow cleaves the twilight gloom,
And as a friend you show the way out of the valley.

O you, my fair evening star,
Gladly have I always greeted you:
Greet her, from the depths of this heart,
Which has never betrayed her,
Greet her, when she passes,
When she soars above this mortal vale
To become a holy angel there!

Watching the skinny kid be the countertenor (i.e. the high treble) was at first a surprise because the thin folks are usually the bass. However, I assume he has a strong falsetto which would not be unusual for a bass/baritone. I (a bass/baritone) can actually handle alto better than tenor as I can do it entirely in falsetto and do have to support sitting on the passaggio (the break between the chest voice and the head voice/falsetto which is easier noticed in changing boys voices). I have lost some of the higher range though I could probably get that back with regular usage.

In any case, it was well done.

I think I'm a 'natural' tenor/baritone, but was often asked to backup the alto and sometimes the bass. That was a long time ago and I have lost a LOT of range. My falsetto sure ain't what it used to be.

As to the performance, I gotta say that Sheeran irritates me in some undefinable way. He's got a fine voice for what he does, but I dunno what irritates me about him. In some ways he reminds of Julio Iglesias for some reason, but I know exactly why I don't like Iglesias: he absolutely pounds out the vibrato and it is just down right annoying. Sheeran doesn't do that, but I just can't warm to him.

Seeing as the company I keep here would not approve of my generation's music that influenced my youth...I shall once more cross a bridge that unites us, maor classical...

Now to me Mozart was indeed a genius, but I feel the he was always pushed into it, and because of it much of his music seems engineered to me and lacking in passion as compared to Beethoven, Liszt. et al...still I can't deny his great talent, so I present the first piece that I learned on viola, because my father was determined that one of his sons would know how to play a classical instrument...

"He sewed his eyes shut because he is afraid to see, He tries to tell me what I put inside of me
He's got the answers to ease my curiosity, He dreamed a god up and called it Christianity"

Huge Muppet fan here so Friday night we watched their Halloween special (not their best) but Dancing in the Moonlight ran over the closing credits with all the muppets and guest stars dancing along. I've been earwormed and couldn't be happier.

There's no official vid (1972) so I went with this skateboarding one.

Pup Dennis in training to be a guide dog & given to a deserving vet. Thx! ImageImageImage x4

ETA. I asked Hubby if he recognized the Mozart piece and he said, "Of course. I watched Bugs Bunny!" :rotflmao:

We loved the "Dancing in the Moonlight"! It's one of our songs from courtship days. :lovestruck:

That link doesn't work - its an Amazon thing.

This is what it is about: Springsteen is releasing a (bluray, CD, vinyl ) set with his gig at the MUSE "No Nukes" concert. "No Nukes" is one of my favorite live albums of all time. The Doobies, Bonnie Raitt, John Hall, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, Nicolette Larson, Ry Cooder, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Gil Scott Heron, Jesse Colin Young, Chaka Khan, Poco, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Springsteen, Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Are you f'in kidding me? NOW THAT WAS A CONCERT!!!!

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band’s ‘The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts’ Film To Be Released This November

Sergiu Celibidache conducting the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Ravel's Boléro. The recording focuses entirely on the conductor, showing his gestures and emotions as the music builds.
