In college, we returned from summer break and had to prep the 9th for a performance in 3 weeks. Screaming high Fs for many measures when you are not yet back in shape after the break is not what I call a hug. It's more of a punch in the nose.

Too also, being deaf, he had no issues with the soloists' unaccompanied cadenza near the end, which is almost impossible to get in tune. He did not have to hear it performed. It probably sounded great in his head.

Still, it is a great work.

On the Coronation thread we had some brief discussion of Tudor musicians such as Thomas Tallis. This Sunday, my choir is singing his motet, "I ye love me" which seems potentially appropriate for Mother's Day.



One of Tallis's more ambitious works is Spem in alium. It is written for 40 different voice parts. In other words, it requires eight 5-part choirs.

The nice thing with the internet, somebody is always willing to make some pretty visual to go with it (as performed by the Tallis Scholars).

I may never be able to listen to ITCOTKK again without hearing how flat Greg Lake was on much of this.

Fripp is such a perfectionist that I cannot comprehend how he let this get into the final mix.

I'm gonna have to go put it on, RIGHT NOW, to see how much the orchestration hides the flat vocals.

It's a sad song and I think Greg captured the feeling perfectly:

Stop me if you’ve heard this before…

First time I saw Tallis Scholars live there was an announcement beforehand - due to sudden illness a certain singer was replaced at the last minute. As the concert progressed I was amazed at how seamlessly this new person fit into the group.

Fast forward a decade, I was waiting tables on an extremely busy Sunday at our local popular restaurant. At one table were two handsome men, personable and patient. When I delivered their coffee drinks they were talking about a concert they’d seen. One of them asked me what my best concert experience had been, so I told them about Tallis and how impressed I was by the replacement singer.

When I’m enthusiastic about something, you can tell. I went on for a bit before l noticed their beaming reaction.

“What?” I asked One guy pointed to his friend. “That was him.” My mouth fell open.””Yeah, sure” No really, he teaches Tallis at UCLA and is a renowned Tallis Scholar”.

I mean, come on. What are the odds ? I comped them 💕

So now when people ask that question I tell the whole story.

I fell down a rabbit hole last week. It all started here.



Then I checked some of his other stuff



His voice is mesmerizing, his lyrics next level.



He calls the genre Bardcore. Storytelling. I won’t dump it all out here. Violet’s Tale and Jenny and Screech, check the out if you like it.

He also busks in Brighton.



He has Lyme disease, got it at around age 10. Lyme ticks are endemic in his area. By 17 it had stopped him in his tracks and got the next 10 years misdiagnosed and prescribed many inappropriate drugs (in addition to those he took himself). Two stem cell transplants and other experimental therapies later and he’s almost back.

Lots of songs are autobiographical but relatable.

He’s also a marketing genius. He has no record label; he’s promoting himself. Hi Ren has something like 20 millions YT views since it dropped in December.

Then I did something I’ve never done before, watched reaction videos. I’m not alone in thinking this guy has a golden road ahead.

Ok I’m done. 😁 He may not be your cuppa. That’s ok.
