I have been trying to imagine a symphony orchestra concert program that would be most offensive to Putin in these troubled times.

So far-

Ukraine's National Anthem

Finlandia" by Jan Sibelius

"Music for Prague 1968" by Karel Husa

(Personal note- Karel Husa was a Czech-born and raised Pulitzer Prize-winning composer who moved to France after WW II then to the USA where he was a professor at Cornell University from 1954 to 1992. After the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia he wrote "Music for Prague 1968" which exists in two versions, one for symphonic band and a later one for symphony orchestra.

In the late 1960's and early 1970's I was a tuba player in the MIT Concert Band which mostly played new music for band. Every year the band did a tour in January between the fall and spring semesters. It was in January 1971 or 1972 ( I can't recall which for certain) that our tour went to Cornell. There we did an open rehearsal with Karel Husa himself conducting us in "Music for Prague 1968". It is an experience that has stayed with me. I recall him at one point telling the trumpets to make the music sound like machine guns and then saying how much he hated machine guns. He was a very intense conductor. It was obvious that he was deeply invested in the music.)

"The Anti-Communist and Anti-Russian Aggression Song" by Chiang Kai Shek

"The Spider" by Stefania Turkewich (Her music was banned in Ukraine when it was under Soviet leadership. Since 1991, her works have begun to resurface.)

“1944” by Jamala (a somber Eurovision-winning song that evokes Moscow’s deportation of members of her Crimean ethnic group during World War II.)

Any other suggestions?

Thanks, raisin, for tucking that away. I watched it; I’m so close to tears all the time now over the terrible inhumanity of Putin’s war, this set me off. I want to strangle Putin with my bare hands for causing so much death and misery in pursuit of his shrinking manhood.

It will be interesting to see who those 37 unsanctioned members are, although we can probably all guess.

Word on the bird site is that Ireland is considering banning oil and coal imports from Russia. No articles yet.

Makes sense that more dems wouldn't have any ties to Russia to be sanctionable for than pubs.

We're chatting a bit.

I'll be moving to a small condo soon. I looked at ebay and other websites for selling off my stuff. They are doing next to nothing to support Ukraine. Thank goodness for etsy! Since I am technically antique or vintage, I'll raise some more money for her.
Please tell her our connection is through my friend John Dachik.
Will do. Just heard from her again.
She's still in Lviv.

I'm wondering if maybe they left some of them off the sanctions list precisely to give the impression they might be Russian Assets, even though they're not. A kind of subtle propaganda intended to hurt the careers of some of the more staunch anti-Russians in Congress, perhaps?

Have no idea where this came from, so take it with all the salt, but --

I heard that the people Congressfolk who were not on this list had
been previously sanctioned. Hence.

Ukraine war: Trucks stuck at Poland-Belarus border as EU sanctions deadline passes

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-6 ... D54744363C
In the run-up to the Saturday deadline, the line extended to 80km (60 miles), with some stuck for up to 33 hours.

The EU has banned lorries from Russia and Belarus - except those carrying medicine, mail or petroleum products - from entering or staying in the bloc.

The move is part of sanctions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Drone footage filed by Reuters news agency showed long queues remaining as the midnight deadline neared.
