Russia launches biggest drone attack yet on Kyiv as city marks its founding
Ukraine says it shot down 52 Iranian-made devices but debris killed one person and injured two

Julian Borger in Kyiv
Sun 28 May 2023 14.52 BST

Russia unleashed the biggest drone attack against Kyiv of the war so far overnight as the city prepared to mark the annual celebration of its founding. However, according to Ukrainian military officials, almost all the Iranian-made aircraft were shot down.

The air force said it shot down 52 out of 54 Shahed drones launched against the city in successive waves, but falling debris still killed one man, injured two people, and set ablaze the roof of a shopping centre.

The attack appeared to come from the north and south and at low altitudes. A spokesperson from Operational Command South said the Russians appeared to be seeking ways of evading Ukraine’s steadily improving air defences.

“The enemy traditionally used the eastern coast of the Azov Sea to attack, but the routes of these aircraft were somewhat unconventional,” the spokesperson told reporters. “They tried to bypass southern air defences as much as possible … They mostly flew over the temporarily occupied territories and dispersed across Ukraine.

“They are trying to gravitate towards riverbeds to hide the direction of movement of the Shahed groups,” she added. “We continue to study new approaches in tactics to be as effective as possible.”

Military observers have suggested that another goal of the constant stream of Russian air attacks is to exhaust Ukrainian air defence ammunition using cheap Iranian drones. Ukrainian officials have told western capitals that a shortage of anti-aircraft missiles is one of their most pressing concerns, ahead of a planned spring counteroffensive against Russian occupying forces.

The drone attacks came in the early hours of Kyiv Day, the annual celebration of the city’s founding 1,541 years ago, marked by street fairs and live concerts.

“The history of Ukraine is a longstanding irritant for the insecure Russians,” Andriy Yermak, the head of Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s office, said on his Telegram channel.

Serhiy Popko, the head of the capital’s military administration, said on the Telegram messaging app: “Today, the enemy decided to ‘congratulate’ the people of Kyiv on Kyiv Day with the help of their deadly UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles].

“The attack was carried out in several waves, and the air alert lasted more than five hours.”

In some parts of the city, local people, inured to Russian air raids, stood on their balconies, shouting slogans praising Ukrainian air defences and defying Vladimir Putin and Russia.

Head of RT Calls for Lindsey Graham’s Assassination After Edited Video

Julia Davis
Mon, May 29, 2023 at 12:47 AM GMT+2

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham’s recent comments during his Friday meeting with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in the war-torn country caused outrage and fury in Moscow, with the head of RT Margarita Simonyan calling for his assassination.

In a video clip of the meeting, Graham’s comments were spliced in a way that made it seem that the Senator stated that the fact that Russians “are dying” in the invasion is “the best money we’ve ever spent.” In fact, Graham said that the U.S. aid to Ukraine—and not specifically the deaths of the Russians—was a valuable investment in global security for the United States.

“Senator [Lindsey] Graham has something to compare with. One of their [US] investments led to World War II and the Holocaust,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimed in a statement on Telegram. State TV host Vladimir Solovyov followed Zakharova’s lead on his program, Sunday Evening With Vladimir Solovyov, as he angrily exclaimed: “Your dirty American money also fully supported the Nazi regime in Germany! You are a Nazi beast and you’re following in the footsteps of your predecessors. I’ll repeat it once again: you will croak, but the Russian people will live forever!”

Russian-Speaking Airmen Translate Rare Account of Ukraine War Through Invader’s Eyes

May 30, 2023 |
By David Roza

“Half of my guys changed clothes and wore Ukrainian uniforms because they were of higher quality and more comfortable. … Our great country was unable to clothe, equip, and feed its own army.”

Those are among the opening lines of a harrowing 77-page account from Russian paratrooper Pavel Filatyev, describing his part in the 2022 invasion of Ukraine—and now available to read in English thanks to five Russian-speaking Airmen who translated the text on behalf of the Air Force Culture and Language Center (AFCLC).

The full blog—titled “Zov,” a term that means “Calling” in English—made headlines in August after appearing on the Russian social media website Vkontakte. Though Russian soldiers had previously posted photos and videos of the war to social media, Filatyev’s blog was one of the first longform accounts to appear in public.

“I cannot remain silent,” wrote Filatyev, who later fled Russia for political asylum in France.

Airmen and the rest of America can now read the whole document on the U.S. Air Force’s Air University website. And while it may be impossible to verify all of the details in Filatyev’s account, his writing offers a rare glimpse of what went wrong in the Russian invasion.

Specifically for U.S. service members and leaders, “Zov” provides insight into how Ukrainian forces have been able to defy the odds and blunt the effects of a larger, technologically superior Russian military, one of the USAF translators told Air & Space Forces Magazine.

“Before the invasion started, everybody was reporting that Ukraine would fall within weeks, and that clearly hasn’t happened,” Capt. Roman Obolonskiy said. “Now we have to go back and figure out what within our military intelligence community and analysis failed to predict this outcome.”

While military planners could estimate the number of Russian resources like tanks, troops, and planes, accounts like “Zov” shed light on intangible factors such as morale, motivation, and training.

Ukraine seems to have lost a number of jets
Russia hits base in Ukraine in new wave of strikes, Zelenskiy praises Patriots

By Pavel Polityuk and Olena Harmash
May 30, 20231:27 AM GMT+2Updated 18 hours ago

KYIV, May 29 (Reuters) - Russia said on Monday its military hit Ukrainian air bases in overnight strikes and Ukrainian forces shelled industrial facilities inside Russia as both sides sought the upper hand ahead of what Kyiv hopes will be a decisive counter-offensive.

In a rare acknowledgement of damage to a military "target", Ukraine said that work was under way to restore a runway and that five aircraft were taken out of service in the western region of Khmelnitskiy, though it did not name the sites.

A military airfield was sited in the region before the war.

"At the moment, work is continuing to contain fires in storage facilities for fuel and lubricants and munitions," the Khmelnitskiy regional governor's office said.

Russian state-owned news agency RIA cited the defence ministry as saying more than one air base had been hit. There was no confirmation from Ukraine of damage to other air bases.

Who was behind Moscow drone attacks and what do they mean for Ukraine war?
Latest attacks on Russian capital may be tactic by Kyiv to bring invasion closer to wealthy Muscovites

Peter Beaumont
Tue 30 May 2023 19.34 BST

The drone attacks targeting Moscow early on Tuesday, which have been blamed on Kyiv, were by far the largest wave launched against Russia since the start of its war against Ukraine. What’s going on?

What do we know about the attack?

According to Russian authorities and media, eight drones were involved in the attack, with five shot down or otherwise disabled with jamming technology. Russian media close to the security services said the number was many times higher, with more than 30 drones participating in the attack. The three drones that did strike all hit locations in south-west Moscow: a residential building, a high-rise apartment block, and another high-rise building. None of the impacts caused significant damage or casualties.

What drones were involved?

There has been speculation that at least one of the drones involved was a UJ-22 produced by the Ukrainian Ukrjet company, which Russia claims has been involved in at least one previous attack. Some other experts disagree, suggesting it is another model of drone, citing differences in appearance.

What is clear is that the drone that was spotted was probably designed to have a relatively long range, although it is not clear if its origin was within Russia or from Ukraine itself.

Me: There will be some infighting.. perhaps a purge, but probably just a falling out (of a window)..

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin calls for investigation into 'crimes' of top Russian defence officials

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-06-01/ ... /102418986

Russia's most powerful mercenary, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has said that he asked prosecutors to investigate whether senior Russian defence officials committed any "crime" before or during the war in Ukraine.

Key points:
Mr Prigozhin is not directly challenging Mr Putin
He said this week that he continues to inform the top leadership of the country about problems
The UN has proposed 'mutually beneficial' plan to save a deal allowing safe Black Sea grain exports

Mr Prigozhin's request is his most blatant public challenge to date against President Vladimir Putin's top military brass, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.

The 61-year-old restaurateur-turned-mercenary has spent months insulting both Mr Shoigu and Mr Gerasimov, who are leading Russia's war effort, for alleged treachery. Neither has responded publicly to his criticism.

Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin says Kremlin factions are destroying the state by trying to sow discord between him and Chechen fighters.

Key points:

Yevgeny Prigozhin blamed Kremlin factions for the dispute between him and Chechen forces
Russian President Vladimir Putin held a security council meeting on "interethnic" relations inside the country.
Russian shelling had killed at least four civilians across Ukraine in the previous 24 hours

He said that row had now been settled but infighting in the Kremlin had opened a Pandora's Box of rifts.

Wagner captures Russian commander as Prigozhin feud with army escalates
Lt Col Roman Venevitin seen telling interrogator he ordered troops to shoot at convoy of mercenaries

Pjotr Sauer
Mon 5 Jun 2023 11.16 BST

Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Wagner group of mercenaries has captured a Russian commander, as the notorious leader further escalates his feud with the regular army.

In a video posted on Prigozhin’s social media channels, Lt Col Roman Venevitin, the commander of Russia’s 72nd Brigade, tells an interrogator that, while drunk, he had ordered his troops to fire on a Wagner convoy.

In the footage, which resembled clips of prisoner of war soldiers, Venevitin said he acted because of his “personal dislike” for Wagner and then apologised.

Last week, Prigozhin accused the Russian army of trying to blow up his men as they were pulling back from the eastern Ukrainian town of Bakhmut.

The businessman, who is best known as “Putin’s chef” because of his catering contracts with the Kremlin, also claimed his men had discovered explosives, which he said were planted on purpose by defence ministry officials.

The Russian ministry of defence has yet to comment on the footage.

Two close family members of Venevitin confirmed to the Guardian that the man filmed in the video was their relative.

Surface elevation 44 m (144 ft)

The Kakhovka Reservoir (Ukrainian: Каховське водосховище, romanized: Kakhovs′ke vodoskhovyshche) was a water reservoir on the Dnieper River in Ukraine. It was created in 1956, when the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant was built at Nova Kakhovka. On June 6, 2023, it catastrophically emptied after the failure of the the dam. It was one of several reservoirs in the Dnieper reservoir cascade.

Geography

The reservoir covers a total area of 2,155 square kilometres in the Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk Oblasts of Ukraine.[1] It is 240 km long and up to 23 km wide. The depth varies from 3 to 26 metres and averages 8.4 meters. The total water volume is 18.2 km3.

It is used mainly to supply hydroelectric stations, the Krasnoznamianka Irrigation System, the Kakhovka Irrigation System, industrial plants such as the 5.7 GW Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, freshwater fish farms, the North Crimean Canal and the Dnieper–Kryvyi Rih Canal.[2] Its creation formed a deep-water route for ships to sail up the Dnieper.

2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine

Beginning in early November 2022, Russia opened the spillways at the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant and the reservoir dropped to its lowest level in 3 decades, putting at risk irrigation and drinking water resources as well as the coolant systems for the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Between December 1, 2022, and February 6, 2023, the water level dropped 2 meters.[3] The purpose of the discharge is unclear. It could be a way to harm Ukrainian agriculture, but most of the affected agricultural areas are in Russian-held parts of Ukraine.[3] The Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration suggested that the motive might have been in part to flood the area south of the dam in order to keep Ukrainian Forces from crossing the Dnipro River.[3] After reaching a low point the water level began to rise after the Ukrainian government began filling it with water from other reservoirs on the Dnipro River. "All of this poses a threat of lowering the water level to a critical level throughout the whole cascade of Dnipro reservoirs in Ukraine," said Ukraine's Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources.[4]

Since mid-February, 2023, either deliberately or as a result of neglect, the damaged dam at Nova Kakhovka has not been adjusting to the seasonal increase in water flow, to the point that water is washing over the top of the dam and land above it has been flooded.[5] Water levels in the reservoir have reached a 30-year high.[6]

The Russia–Ukraine conflict has had a profound impact on water resources and water infrastructure.[7]

In the early morning of June 6, 2023, a large section of the dam collapsed or was blown up, causing an uncontrolled release of water downstream
Kherson is a very low lying city and this is going to cause extreme damage.

it looks like it was mined and the mines were detonated this morning. While it is possible that the Dam failed due to the damage it suffered last November, in general Dams fail slowly then fast. This sudden failure means it pretty much had to be done deliberately.

The Russians saying the Ukranians did it is nonsense. Why would they flood the Route they need for their offensive into Crimea? Why would they mess up the infrastructure of Kherson?

Russia-Ukraine war live: evacuations under way near Kherson after Russian destruction of dam causes flooding

https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/ ... itary-says

Dam's destruction 'may have negative consequences' for Zaporizhzia, but situation 'under control'

Energoatom, the Ukrainian state nuclear energy company, has responded to the damage to the dam, saying it “may have negative consequences for the [Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant], but the situation is under control”.

It has blamed the dam’s flooding on Russian forces, saying, “On the night of June 6, 2023, the Russian invaders blew up the dam of the Kakhovskaya HPP.”

It explained that the “rapidly decreasing” water levels in the reservoir posed an “additional threat to the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP.”
For now, however, the nuclear power station’s cooling pond was full, it said.

Water from the Kakhovsky reservoir is necessary for the station to receive power for turbine capacitors and safety systems of the ZNPP. The station’s cooling pond is now full: as of 8am, the water level is 16.6 metres, which is sufficient for the station’s needs.

Energoatom monitors the situation and follows the actions of workers at the ZNPP together with other international organisations present at the plant, in particular, the IAEA.

Any changes will be promptly notified.

Odds are that it was the Russians that blew the dam.

The flooding would make it incredibly difficult to launch the coming counter offensive south of there (or even a feint there).

The dropping water level of the dam will make any projected use of the lake for an amphibious assault or logistic support of an attack north or south of it compromised.

There was no advantage to the Ukrainians to blow it themselves, and it was blown… misplaced artillery wouldn’t have done it.

It will also make it more difficult on Ukraine to make use of the water for their own agriculture rather than sending it to Crimea. Crimea now has a guaranteed waterflow till the damn is rebuilt, so they have bought themselves many years. It was only a matter of time before Russia did this.

And I am sure Kirill would paint it as a holy act that has god's blessing.

I used to follow a youtuber who did translations of the intercepted phone calls.. including several where wives were giving 'permission' to their soldier husbands to rape Ukrainian women.. so yeah... the supporters of this war are just terrible, and willing to do anything to feel good about their place in the world.

Wagner group accused of stoking ‘anarchy’ on Russia’s frontlines
Kremlin commander claimed the mercenaries had kidnapped and tortured his soldiers during battle for Bakhmut

Andrew Roth
Fri 9 Jun 2023 18.01 BST

The Wagner group has been accused of stoking “anarchy” on Russia’s frontlines after one of the Kremlin’s military commanders claimed Yevgeny Prigozhin’s mercenaries had kidnapped and tortured his soldiers during the battle for Bakhmut.

In a video posted online, Lt Col Roman Venevitin also accused Wagner soldiers of stealing arms, forcing mobilised soldiers to sign contracts with Wagner, and attempting to extort weapons from the Russian defence ministry in exchange for releasing kidnapped soldiers.

The circumstances surrounding the abduction and subsequent accusations made by Venevitin, who called himself the “already former commander” of Russia’s 72nd Independent Motorised Rifle Brigade, remain unclear. His current whereabouts is not known and it is unclear if the new comments, like those previously, were made under duress. The Guardian was not able to reach Venevitin or independently verify his claims.

He did not say why he had been relieved of his command.

The kidnapping of Venevitin, which was made public when Prigozhin released a video of his soldiers interrogating the active duty military commander, have already shown that the infighting in the Russian ranks had moved beyond words into physical clashes and ambushes.

If true, the accusations would shed new light on the severity of the infighting between Prigozhin and the Russian military, whom the Kremlin-linked tycoon has accused of depriving his mercenaries of shells and of intentionally firing on his fighters while both were engaged with the Ukrainian army in the city of Bakhmut.
