Russia claims Ukraine tried to assassinate Putin in drone attack on the Kremlin
The Kremlin did not provide evidence to support the claims, but said it "reserves the right to take retaliatory measures where and when it sees fit.” Kyiv denied any involvement.

Yes, Putin wants to assassinate Zelensky. Hasn't it already come out there was a failed attempt? I think Putin realizes that Zelensky was able to rise to the occasion and without him Putin has a better chance of taking over Ukraine.
There's a lot of things that need to change. One specifically? Police brutality.

So, is Moscow lying in preparation for a “retaliatory” attack or is there another player trying to knock Vlad loose?

I call BS. The flag was still flying above the Kremlin and the dome.

Note: in the recent months there have been some attacks into Russia that have been attributed to Belarus independance fighters, operating separate from the Ukraine war, using the destabilization of Russia due to the Ukraine war. There were reports about single drone bombing getting nearer to Moscow. It's very well possible that they demonstrated their capability to reach the Kremlin, while at this time not making huge damage.

You may have to ask all those Russians who settled in Crimea after the annexation, and now have fled back home to "real" Russia, leaving behind their wealth invested into real estate and appartments. From pictures of the convoys leaving Crimea they may have also left behind much of the interior furniture. They got the shock of their life when the Ukraine forces started to hit the Russian bases and infrastructure on Crimea. Once the main objective on the eastern front is reached, the Ukranians will have a Sunday stroll into Crimea. With luck they will also get some Russian cruisers still hanging around in Sevastopol Navy harbour. Or scrap metal to recycle.

Wagner chief rages at Russia’s generals and threatens Bakhmut pullout
In extraordinary video tirade, Yevgeny Prigozhin attacks defence minister and chief of armed forces

Pjotr Sauer
Fri 5 May 2023 17.36 BST

The leader of the Wagner mercenary group has brought escalating tensions with the Kremlin military leadership dramatically into the open after he recorded an expletive-ridden video in a field littered with corpses and blamed Russia’s top defence chiefs for the losses.

“These are Wagner lads who died today. The blood is still fresh,” Yevgeny Prigozhin says in the extraordinary clip, pointing to roughly three-dozen bodies that he says are those of the Wagner fighters. “They came here as volunteers and are dying so you can sit like fat cats in your luxury offices.”

In a separate message on Friday morning, Prigozhin said Wagner troops would leave the besieged eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut next week over what he said was the lack of ammunition for his troops.

In the two-minute first clip, Prigozhin, known as “Putin’s chef” because his catering business hosted dinners attended by the Russian president, screams as he calls out the Russian defence minister, Sergei Shoigu, and the chief of the Russian armed forces, Gen Valery Gerasimov over military supplies.

“Shoigu, Gerasimov, where the fuck is our ammunition?” he shouts, before continuing to unleash personal insults directed at Shoigu, a longtime ally of Putin. “You scum sit there in your expensive clubs. Your kids are all getting off on life, recording their little YouTube videos,” Prigozhin says, referring to Shoigu’s son-in-law Alexey Stolyarov, a popular fitness blogger.

Wagner has played a key role in the months-long assault on Bakhmut, a high-profile battlefield with limited strategic value. To bolster its ranks, Wagner has recruited tens of thousands of prisoners who fight for the group in exchange for their freedom.

Ukraine's air force has claimed to have downed a Russian hypersonic missile over Kyiv using newly acquired American Patriot defence systems, the apparent first time the country has been able to intercept one of Moscow's most modern missiles.

Key points:

A Ukrainian newspaper has quoted military officials as saying Russian forces had used "phosphorus and incendiary ammunition" in Bakhmut
Ukraine's Special Operations Forces have released footage of Bakhmut, seemingly been attacked by a kind of incendiary weapon
Ukraine says a Russian hypersonic missile flying over Kyiv was downed using the newly acquired US Patriot defence system

Air Force commander Mykola Oleshchuk said in a Telegram post that the Kinzhal-type ballistic missile had been intercepted in an overnight attack on the Ukrainian capital earlier in the week.

It was also the first time Ukraine is known to have used the Patriot defence systems.

In warfare, an important target is often the enemy commander and the headquarters that assists them to plan and execute military operations.

By killing a senior military leader, planning and decision-making can be slowed down. This can lead to a breakdown in the cohesion of a large military force, allowing friendly forces to attack it piecemeal or exploit tactical opportunities while it is unable to respond effectively.

The Chinese call this systems destruction warfare. It is an extraordinarily effective approach if planned and coordinated well, particularly given the reliance on communications, sensors and AI-based decision-support tools by modern militaries.

However, for their coming offensive, the Ukrainians are likely to avoid targeting one Russian commander in particular. This specific senior Russian officer has been unimaginative and ineffective since the beginning of the war, so much so that it almost seems he is working for the other side at times.

On the other hand, the Russian system is based around troops in the field who have basically no autonomy. Even the most basic decisions come from several levels above the grunts in the trenches. This is in part because of historic paranoia regarding disloyalty but also comes from the fact that the Russian system does not have career sergeants, which are the backbone of Western style militaries. Petty officers give continuity to the organization and have the training to be trusted in autonomy at the small unit level.

At the general officer level, one could argue that killing even an incompetent general in that system is a positive for the Ukrainians, because all orders would stall completely until they get a new guy into the field and he gets up to speed. Figure at least a month. Also, taking out a theater command headquarters would take out a lot of the staff officers that make the operation run -- mission planners, logistics experts (such as they are in Russia), etc. Gutting the command staff would probably be a much bigger problem for the Russians than losing the person of the guy in charge.

The guy that's out there right now is telling Putin what he wants to hear. After so many generals being sacked (and some good ones being killed), the replacement would soon reckon (if he hadn't already) that his main personal survival tactic is being as much of a smarmy suck-up as his predecessor. In other words, competence becomes a bug, not a feature. So even if the new guy is smarter, he won't dare show it.

While I can see the logic that the article raises, one could build an equally compelling case that the opposite is true. We'll find out soon enough.

Then you could use his incompetence and insecurity to attack his staff and subordinates - to neutralize their C3I by causing them to doubt their survival at his hands by doing anything that he possibly doesn't want done, especially showing initiative.

Feed the rumour mills and then when things become critical - feed into it that Putin has lost confidence in him and those close to him.

Of course if you could hit his HQ.. do so.. as you say - the immediate value is high.

The head of Russia's Wagner private army has launched a new profanity-laced tirade at Moscow's generals, accusing them of failing to give his forces enough weapons.

Key points:
Yevgeny Prigozhin says Moscow has told him leaving Bakhmut would be regarded as treason
Moscow regards capturing Bakhmut as a stepping stone to taking other Ukrainian cities
The Times reports Britain may blacklist the Wagner mercenary group as a terrorist organisation

Wagner mercenaries have spearheaded Russia's months-long assault on the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut.

"A combat order came yesterday which clearly stated that if we leave our positions [in Bakhmut], it will be regarded as treason against the motherland," Yevgeny Prigozhin said in an audio message.

"[But] if there is no ammunition, then we will leave our positions and be the ones asking who is really betraying the motherland."

A senior Ukrainian military official says that Russian forces had dropped back from some areas near Bakhmut after counter-attacks by Kyiv's forces in the longest-running battle of Moscow's invasion.

Key points:

The head of Ukraine's ground forces says Russian forces in parts of Bakhmut had retreated by up to two kilometres
Wagner mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin says some Russian troops had fled from positions in Bakhmut
Mr Prigozhin says Moscow's top generals were trying to "deceive" President Vladimir Putin over the Kremlin's Ukraine campaign

Commander of Ukrainian ground forces Oleksandr Syrskyi said Russian troops had fallen back in some regions of the front in the eastern Donetsk region by up to two kilometres.

Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant facing ‘catastrophic’ staff shortage amid Russian evacuation
Russia plans to relocate thousands of staff from nuclear plant, atomic energy company claims, warning of ‘catastrophic lack of qualified personnel’

Associated Press
Thu 11 May 2023 01.00 BST

Russia plans to relocate about 2,700 Ukrainian staff from Europe’s largest nuclear plant, Ukraine’s atomic energy company has claimed, warning of a potential “catastrophic lack of qualified personnel” at the Zaporizhzhia facility in Russian-occupied southern Ukraine.

Workers who signed employment contracts with Russia’s nuclear agency Rosatom following Moscow’s capture of the Zaporizhzhia plant early in the war are set to be taken to Russia along with their families, Energoatom said in a Telegram post on Wednesday.

The company did not specify whether the employees would be forcibly moved out of the plant, nor was it immediately possible to verify Energoatom’s claims about Moscow’s plan.

Removing staff would “exacerbate the already extremely urgent issue” of staff shortages, Energoatom said.
