Yes. To condense a lot of history into a few sentences, Napoleon basically threatened everyone in Europe that if they didn't participate in his blockade of England, he would attack them with his genius and his invincible armies. The Problem is that he had just come back from a disastrous campaign in Egypt, where he had been resoundingly and humiliatingly defeated, and he had run back to Europe while abandoning his armies.

He tried to keep it quiet (that was one reason he left his army behind to be massacred, no witnesses) but news eventually filtered up to Europe. So they now knew that the conqueror had been defeated and his army was weaker. So all of Europe started breaking the blockade in small ways, and testing French resolve. Attacking Russia was one way of showing that France could strike over all of Europe and could defeat a massive army. He never intended to HOLD or conquer Russia, just defeat them in a war to prove his "Mojo." But again, his strategic incoherence betrayed him, and there was no hiding THIS defeat or these losses.

Napoleon spent the rest of his life blaming everyone else for his defeats.

Hitler: Steiner's assault will bring it under control.
Krebs: My Führer, Steiner..... (anxious)
Jodl: Steiner couldn't mobilize enough men. He wasn't able to carry out his assault.
Hitler: (expression remains exactly the same for a few seconds, pulls glasses shakingly) These men will stay here: Keitel, Jodl, Krebs and Burgdorf.
(Everybody exits except for the aforementioned generals, as well as Goebbels and Bormann)
Hitler: (exploding) THAT WAS AN ORDER!
STEINER'S ASSAULT WAS AN ORDER!
Who do you think you are to dare disobey an order I give?!
So this is what it has come to... The military has been lying to me!
Everybody has been lying to me, even the SS!
Our generals are just a bunch of contemptible, disloyal COWARDS!...

“Retired colonel speaks out on Russian TV”:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-61484222

‘The Kremlin still maintains that the Russian offensive is going according to plan.
But on Monday night, studio guest Mikhail Khodarenok, a military analyst and retired colonel, painted a very different picture.
He warned that "the situation [for Russia] will clearly get worse" as Ukraine receives additional military assistance from the West and that "the Ukrainian army can arm a million people".
Referring to Ukrainian soldiers, he noted: "The desire to defend their motherland very much exists. Ultimate victory on the battlefield is determined by the high morale of troops who are spilling blood for the ideas they are ready to fight for.
"The biggest problem with [Russia's] military and political situation," he continued, "is that we are in total political isolation and the whole world is against us, even if we don't want to admit it. We need to resolve this situation.
"The situation cannot be considered normal when against us, there is a coalition of 42 countries and when our resources, military-political and military-technical, are limited."’

Russian soldier pleads guilty in Ukraine’s first war crime trial since invasion
World May 18, 2022 9:41 AM EDT
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/russ ... e-invasion
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A 21-year-old Russian soldier facing the first war crimes trial since Moscow invaded Ukraine pleaded guilty Wednesday to killing an unarmed civilian.

Sgt. Vadim Shishimarin could get life in prison for shooting a a 62-year-old Ukrainian man in the head through an open car window in the northeastern Sumy region on Feb. 28, four days into the invasion.

Shishimarin, a captured member of a Russian tank unit, was prosecuted under a section of the Ukrainian criminal code that addresses the laws and customs of war. :snippity:

The Security Service of Ukraine, known as the SBU, posted a short video on May 4 of Shyshimarin speaking in front of camera and briefly describing how he shot the man. The SBU described the video as “one of the first confessions of the enemy invaders.”

“I was ordered to shoot,” Shyshimarin said. “I shot one (round) at him. He falls. And we kept on going.”

Russia is believed to be preparing war crime trials for Ukrainian soldiers.
