Russia Is Wasting Its Last Good Troops In A Pointless Attack On A Worthless Town

https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2 ... 3e97d4351d
Around the town of Bakhmut, just north of the separatist Donetsk People’s Republic in eastern Ukraine, Russian troops, pro-Russian separatists and mercenaries from The Wagner Group are continuing a desperate, bloody operation they began way back in May. An attack that, despite Russian claims to the contrary, has failed to break Bakhmut’s Ukrainian garrison.

“The enemy is trying to hold the temporarily captured territories,” the Ukrainian general staff reported on Friday. “At the same time, it does not stop trying to conduct offensive actions in the Bakhmut and Avdiivka directions.” Avdiivka lies 25 miles south of Bakhmut.

It barely makes sense. Bakhmut has no strategic value. Western analysts observing the Russian operation around the town, and counting Russia’s mounting losses, have concluded that the Bakhmut op … isn’t really about Bakhmut. It’s about creating a narrative.

“Russian forces are likely continuing to falsify claims of advances in the Bakhmut area to portray themselves as making gains in at least one sector amid continuing losses in northeast and southern Ukraine,” the Institute for the Study of War in Washington, D.C. concluded last month.

The Bakhmut operation is a lie. And it’s a lie that contains more lies. The overall narrative the Kremlin hopes to create is that, despite all the evidence to the contrary, its forces still can win in Ukraine. And the forces contributing to the Bakhmut attack—in particular, the separatists and Wagner—all are trying to take credit for the fictional wins.

Russian forces could face 'rout' in Kherson; US rejects Russian claim that Ukraine plans radioactive 'provocation':

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/wor ... 582575002/
Russian military leadership in the occupied city of Kherson have fled across the Dnieper River, leaving behind new Russian recruits to try and stall the Ukraine military's push to recapture the city, a Washington-based think tank says.

"Using such inexperienced forces to conduct a delaying action could prompt a Russian rout if Ukrainian forces choose to press the attack," the Institute for the Study of War says in its latest assessment of the war.

The institute says that at least one Russian war blogger noted that the situation in Kherson is dire for frontline Russian troops that could find it ”virtually impossible” to evacuate. How to get those troops out and how to explain the flight from Kherson – which the Kremlin says it has annexed – to the Russian populace remain crucial issues for Russian leadership, the assessment says.

The Russian Kherson Occupation Administration announced Saturday that “all citizens of Kherson must immediately leave the city.” Russia is likely trying to depopulate parts of the region that Ukraine will recapture, damaging the long-term social and economic viability of southern Ukraine, the assessment says.

Russia accuses Ukraine of preparing to unleash a 'dirty bomb' false flag attack

Russia's defence chief has alleged Ukraine is preparing a "provocation" involving a radioactive device, a claim that was strongly rejected by US, British and Ukrainian officials.

Key points:
The UK Defence Secretary rejected Russia's claims and said it should not be used as a pretext for escalation
Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that Moscow was planning on deploying a radioactive device in Ukraine
About 20,000 Kherson residents have moved east of the Dnipro River, Russian-backed officials in Kherson said

:snippity:

"If Russia calls and says Ukraine is allegedly preparing something, it means only one thing: that Russia has already prepared all of it," Mr Zelenskyy said.

Russia has been floating the idea of a dirty bomb, or staged incident at one of Ukraine’s nuclear power facilities, since February. It’s nonsense, sometimes used as projection and sometimes as the outgrowth of paranoia.

I think the primary goal right now is for this threat, plus the planned nuclear test drills, to provide some cover for Russia to distribute radiological protection gear and establish radiological medical treatment areas, in advance of some future final decision on using a nuclear device. (A decision western officials do not believe has been made…yet.)

My primary concern right now would be: if Russia is taking steps (under cover of disinformation or paranoia) to prepare for a potential radiological incident, then they have not yet firmly decided against creating such an incident. Either they have not been bluffing about using a nuclear weapon, or they’ve decided the bluff isn’t working as well as hoped and they need to take steps to double down on the bluff.

Honestly, I think the bluff is all they have got. If they try using a bomb and it fails to explode they are screwed. The saner members of the Russian armed forces have to know that their Nuclear Munitions are probably in terrible condition so they will keep rattling as loud as they can and not dare use it.

Hell for all we know they have already tried to use a nuke and it went pff, but I would expect a lot more obvious panic if that had happened.

Red Army soldier monuments dismantled in Poland despite risk of imprisonment

Four communist-era monuments to Red Army soldiers have been dismantled in Poland, to remove symbols of Moscow's post-World War II domination and to stress its condemnation of the war in Ukraine.

Workers used drills and heavy equipment to destroy the 1945 monuments at four different locations across Poland. Most of them were in the form of concrete obelisks dedicated to Red Army soldiers who fell while fighting to defeat Nazi German troops.

:snippity:

Mr Nawrocki stressed Russian law prosecutes and provides up to three years in prison for anyone removing Soviet army monuments, even in foreign countries.

Putin will need to follow up his order because money and supplies provided to the Russian military tend to disappear.
