I think he's more than earned a promotion from being considered a "Tee Vee dude." Someone who's just a Tee Vee dude wouldn't have the support of most of the Western World and wouldn't still have a free country this long after being invaded by Russia. He's done an amazing job rallying his countrymen and women, leading a strong defense against Putin and has been an effective diplomat in working to obtain what he and his country need from their allies.

He may have started in TV, but he's become so much more.

So very much more.

In crazy periods of history, sometimes outstanding leaders seem almost to materialize before your eyes. This guy has stepped up on the biggest stage imaginable, and he's definitely the real deal.

And in retrospect, it's hilarious that Trump the idiot bumbler thought that somehow he was going to hornswoggle this dude, like Trump thought he was the sophisticated operator from Noo Yawk City. :rotflmao:

Well, Colbert got his start as a humble food waiter and look where he ended up. Never know where one gets to.

Oil tankers are getting stuck in the Black Sea. That could become a problem

https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/08/energy/t ... index.html
As of Thursday, 16 oil tankers traveling south from the Black Sea were waiting to cross the Bosphorus strait into the Sea of Marmara, an increase of five from Tuesday, according to a report from Istanbul-based Tribeca Shipping Agency. A further nine tankers were waiting to cross southbound from the Sea of Marmara through the Dardanelles strait into the Mediterranean.

The snarl-up in waterways controlled by Turkey, which Turkish officials said is mostly affecting crude oil shipments destined for Europe, has caught the attention of UK and US government officials who are now in talks with Ankara to resolve the growing impasse.

The snag is linked to a Western price cap on Russian oil that came into effect on Monday. The cap is supposed to limit the Kremlin’s revenues without adding to stress on the global economy by reducing supply. But Turkey is insisting that vessels prove they have insurance that will pay out in light of the new sanctions, before allowing them to pass through the straits linking the Black Sea and Mediterranean.

The West just scrambled the oil market. What happens next is up to Russia
Although currently causing no disruption to global oil supply and thus prices, the hold-up could become a problem if left unresolved, said Jorge Leon, senior vice president for oil market analysis at Rystad Energy. “This is a very popular route around the world for global trade and specifically for crude,” he told CNN Business.

He makes a statement that ~50% of the US military budget is contractors. I don’t know if this is accurate, but a large amount of that is functions like feeding of troops (to Compass Group and others) and the need to utilize non-combat expertise that is rapidly changing and has a short half-life.

Expertise half-life is a term attempting to define how rapidly a field of knowledge is changing. If one was an up-to-date cutting edge person in a field at a point in time and then they drop out of that field— how many years (not decades) is it until that cutting edge knowledge set is at 50% of it’s value?

In molecular genetics, for example, the toolset used by researchers is changing quickly. To sequence a segment of a genome used to take hundreds of man-hours. Now, an entire genome can be sequenced using next-gen methods pretty quickly (days/weeks) but the error rate in the highly repetitive (often regulatory sequences) the error rate was high because sequencing was done by aligning small fragments.
Nanopore sequencing can read long stretches of DNA without fragments (in a continuous manner) and gave great insight.
Then, the epigenetic markers became important and means of capturing that are varied and rapidly developing.
Taking a sample from a tissue and pulverizing it and then running the cutting edge techniques of the day was providing great insight, but the current SOTA (state of the art) is single cell studies. Not only the DNA, but the RNA machinery and the messenger RNA that is directly (after all the regulatory input and editing) translated to amino acid sequences and therefore proteins.

Point is, in that field, the expertise half-life is considered to be 3-5 years.

Having the US military use contractors in fields (almost certainly not much molecular genetics) like tech and AI that probably have similar expertise half-lifes, is just a wise way to go.

What percentage of the US military budget goes to mercenaries?(equivelants to Black Water) Dunno.
But it likely isn’t even close to half. (Just finger to the wind speculation and I could be wrong)

Angry Staffer 🌻@Angry_Staffer

If anyone wanted to know how the war is going for Putin, a Wagner HQ got destroyed and Russian forces are currently digging defensive trenches in Crimea.

Doesn’t sound like they’re expecting a lull in the fighting for winter, either.

The Kyiv Independent@KyivIndependent

⚡️Governor: Explosion reported at Wagner headquarters in occupied Luhansk Oblast.

According to Luhansk Oblast Governor Serhiy Haidai, an explosion occurred at the headquarters of Russian state-controlled mercenary Wagner Group in Kadiivka. “There are huge losses," he said.

I am not gonna quote V's post, but look at it, two posts up from this one.

He freakin' embedded a Mastodon. And it showed up on my site as a graphic, with a thing that would be a tweet if it was somewhere else. Call it an elephant fart. I still haven't figured out the warning symbol and the flag. But he posted an elephant fart or whatever, from Mastodon.

This is twenty first century stuff, people. Don't try this back in the twentieth century, none of it works back then, not even if you have the TARDIS handy.
