Missed this one from yesterday.
3 killed as Amtrak train hits car in Northern California

Three people were killed Sunday afternoon when an Amtrak commuter train smashed into a car ín Northern California, authorities said.

The crash occurred at around 1 p.m. in Brentwood, about an hour’s drive southeast of San Francisco, the California Highway Patrol reported.

No injuries on the train. Never race a train, the downside is just too much.

At least 12 people have died and 251 were injured in a chlorine gas leak from a storage tank at Jordan's Aqaba port, as authorities called on residents to shut windows and stay indoors.

Key points:
A tank filled with 25 tonnes of chlorine gas fell while being transported
The port's grain silos halted work and ships were asked to avoid the area
Aqaba port is a major transit route for Iraqi imports and exports

Dulce et Decorum est

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer,
Bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,–
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

Though now, it may not look in great shape. That MD-82, delivered in 1990, was parked in storage at Roswell in 2013. It changed owners in 2014 to a company that I think does maintenance so it may be in the process of being stripped, like many of the planes in that boneyard.

What do they mean by it powerbacking on its own? I get that powerbacking means it's going in reverse, but I'm lost on the "on its own" part. Are most planes unable to go in reverse? That seems like it would be weird...

I should wait and let GreatGrey respond, but I will go ahead anyway, and wait for GreatGrey to expose my ignorance.

In most cases, jets do not back away from the terminal under their own power but are pushed back by a vehicle designed for that purpose. In the video, the MD-82 is using a device called a thrust reverser to back up from the terminal instead of using a tug/tractor. The primary use of a thrust reverse is to help slow the plane on the runway so to reduce the amount of runway needed.

It is my understanding that using a thrust reverse to powerback (i.e. back up) is generally not a preferred practice. With most planes having their engines hanging from the wings and closer to the ground, they can blow debris forward, which could hit people or even get sucked back into the engine (that's a bad thing). Plaines like the pictured MD-82 have their engines mounted higher in back so the risk of blowing debris is less.

On a side note, I spent the summer one year during college doing data entry/purchase order entry (and also researching bad data issues for POs in error) for an aerospace company that made hydraulic components for thrust reverses. At that time, they were very proud of their recent work on the new C-17.

Generally correct, FOD [foreign object damage] is one of the reasons not to do a TR backup, however what was done there is also not good for the enginges as now the intake is ingesting hot turbine exhaust gasses in to the compressor, raising temps in the powerplant, which leads to quicker ware of compressor and turbine blades along with other components.

With the C-17 Lockheed had Pratt design an engine that could regularly TR backup with out waring out components by directing the airflow from the vanes upward and forward.
