When was the last time a fiction bestseller was published that didn't include "a sex act"? Heck, even in Moby Dick there were some pretty dodgy scenes.

The title alone is enough to get it banned in FL.

Steve Martin’s Perfect Response to Florida School District That Pulled His Book
In social media posts on Monday, Only Murders In The Building star Steve Martin said he was “proud” that his 2000 novel Shopgirl was among more than 300 books pulled from Collier County Public School libraries in Florida. “So proud to have my book Shopgirl banned in Collier County [Naples], Florida! Now people who want to read it will have to buy a copy!” Martin wrote in a Facebook post that garnereled more than 38,000 likes. The book, which was adapted into a move starring Claire Danes in 2005, was removed by the school district following the passage of a new Florida state law that makes it easier to challenge a school library book that “depicts or describes sexual conduct.” Other authors affected by the removal include Stephen King, Toni Morrison, Ernest Hemingway and Alice Walker.

Pink to Give Away Banned Books at Florida Tour Stops
Florida leads the country in book bans, with more than 1,400 books removed from shelves

Pink announced Monday she plans to hand out 2,000 banned books during her four concert dates in Florida. “Books have held a special joy for me from the time I was a child, and that’s why I am unwilling to stand by and watch while books are banned by schools,” she said in a press release.

The three-time Grammy-winning singer announced her collaboration with the national free speech organization PEN America during an Instagram Live with Amanda Gorman, the youngest inaugural poet in the U.S. Pink will also work with bookseller Books & Books to distribute four books from PEN America’s Index of Banned Books: Todd Parr’s “The Family Book,” Gorman’s “The Hill We Climb,” Toni Morrison’s “Beloved,” and Stacia Deutsch’s “Girls Who Code.”

Florida leads the country in book bans. In a study during the 2022 to 2023 school year, PEN America recorded more than 3,300 book bans across the U.S., a 33% jump from the previous school year. Of those books, 40% of the bans occur in Florida school districts, with 1,406 books off the shelf. Texas placed second with 625 bans. Book bans most often target female authors, LGBTQ authors, and authors of color. For example, the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, backed by Florida governor and presidential candidate Ron Desantis, prohibits K-12 teachers from discussing sexuality and gender identity in schools.

“It’s especially hateful to see authorities take aim at books about race and racism and against LGBTQ authors and those of color,” Pink added in her statement.

The pop singer has planned performances in Miami and Sunrise, Florida, on Nov. 13 and 14, and two shows in Orlando on Nov. 18 and 19 to close out her Trustfall tour. She will hand out books on Florida’s banned list at each show.

“We have made so many strides toward equality in this country and no one should want to see this progress reversed,” Pink said.

This is fun and all, but I'm against banning any book. Even this one. Although I suppose what's good for the goose...

The Utah Legislature in 2022 approved a contentious bill HB374, which lawmakers have described as a way to weed out content found to be pornographic from K-12 libraries and classrooms.

But ...
Utah school board unanimously reversed its decision to remove the Bible off school shelves after appeals

CNN —

A Utah school district that pulled the Bible off elementary and middle school library shelves this month, citing concerns over the text’s age appropriateness, unanimously reversed that decision Tuesday following appeals from the community.

The Davis School District chose to remove the King James version of the Bible from elementary and middle school libraries after a review committee found it included elements of “vulgarity or violence,” CNN affiliate KUTV previously reported. The vote came after a community member asked the district to review the Bible’s inclusion in school libraries, a district spokesperson told CNN.

Within days of announcing the book’s removal, the district received multiple appeal requests, district spokesperson Christopher Williams said.

The board’s vote on Tuesday followed the recommendation of an appeal committee that determined the Bible has significant, serious value for minors that outweighs the violent or vulgar content it contains, Williams sai
https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/21/us/utah- ... index.html

But I think the initial protest to remove the Bible made its point.
From the same article above:
The initial decision from Davis School District leaders to remove the Bible came after a complaint from a person who criticized the state’s processes for removing books from school libraries, according to KUTV.

“I thank the Utah Legislature and Utah Parents United for making this bad faith process so much easier and way more efficient,” the person wrote, according to the affiliate. “Now we can all ban books and you don’t even need to read them or be accurate about it. Heck, you don’t even need to see the book.”
Davis School District in Farmington, Utah has received a request to review the Book of Mormon for inappropriate content shortly after it removed the King James Bible from its elementary and middle school libraries.

A Utah school district removed the Bible from some school libraries. Now it's received a request to review the Book of Mormon

That book review process was set out in a 2022 law that “prohibits certain sensitive instructional materials in public schools” and requires a “local education agency to include parents who are reflective of a school’s community when determining whether an instructional material is sensitive material.”

Judge hears Florida's argument that school book bans are protected government speech

Trying to get a better understanding of Florida's argument that public school libraries are meant to convey the government's message and that book removals are protected government speech, U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor posed a hypothetical.

During a Wednesday hearing in Tallahassee, the Trump-appointed judge asked a representative of Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody's office if, for example, the state believed an official could selectively remove school library books written by Democratic politicians.

Attorney Bridget O'Hickey replied in the affirmative. If Floridians didn't like it, she added, they could vote that official out.

Moody's office is defending Education Secretary Manny Diaz Jr. and members of the Florida Board of Education in a lawsuit filed over the removal of "And Tango Makes Three" from schools in Escambia and Lake counties. It's a children's book, based on a true story, about two male penguins that raise a chick together.

The Texas Historical Commission Removed Books on Slavery From Plantation Gift Shops
An agency spokesperson claimed that the move had nothing to do with politics. Internal emails show otherwise.

After visiting the Varner-Hogg plantation an hour south of Houston, amateur historian Michelle Haas was incensed by what she had seen. At an exhibit that details the farm’s use as a sugar plantation worked by at least 66 slaves in the early nineteenth century, she’d watched an informational video. To her mind, it focused too much on slavery at the site and not enough on the Hogg family, which had turned its former home into a museum celebrating Texas history. She’d also seen books in the visitor center gift shop written by Carol Anderson and Ibram X. Kendi, two Black academic historians who have been outspoken on the issue of systemic racism. Outraged, she emailed David Gravelle, a board member of the Texas Historical Commission, the agency that oversees historical sites at the direction of leaders appointed by Governor Greg Abbott. “What a s—show is this video,” Haas wrote on September 2, 2022. “Add to that the fact that the activist staff member doing the buying for the gift shop thinks Ibram X. Kendi and White Rage have a place at a historic site.”

Over the next eight months, Haas continued to email Gravelle, advocating for such books to be removed. In turn, Gravelle, a marketing executive based in Dallas, took up the cause internally at the Historical Commission, calling on agency staff to do away with the titles Haas didn’t think belonged at the gift shops. By November of this year, it appeared Haas’s demands were met. The Texas Historical Commission no longer sells White Rage by Anderson or Stamped From the Beginning by Kendi, or 23 other works to which Haas later objected, at two former slave plantations in Brazoria County, including Varner-Hogg. Among the literature no longer available for purchase is an autobiography of a slave girl, a book of Texas slave narratives, the celebrated novel Roots by Alex Haley, and the National Book Award–winning Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison.
