I try never to miss an astronomicable event, like solstices and equinoxes and such like.
As an agnostic, these are more important to me than religious holidays. I celebrate the existence of the Universe and all that lies therein.
Where did it all come from? I dunno.

The old year has died, the New Year is reborn, the light and warmth return, at least I hope. Happy Solstice all.

I noticed this during the first year I joined this forum. And among other things, this is one of the reasons I thought this forum, and the members, are just the very coolest on Earth.Foggy wrote: ↑Wed Dec 22, 2021 9:34 am I try never to miss an astronomicable event, like solstices and equinoxes and such like.

I was behind a car, on the solstice, that had a sticker that said, "Blessed Be." I think that's the first time I'd ever seen that.

True for me, too! But I've always noticed it day by day as it changes. Also, depends on where you are. We were in Alaska one year in February. They were gaining something like eight minutes a day. We were there a week and the days were noticeably longer when we left than the week before when we arrived.

People moving up to Oregon from CA comment about the noticeably longer Summer days.
Re: Happy Winter Solstice, y'all.
I do. Each extra minute of sunlight is going to generate a little bit extra electricity. You can see the decrease on the tail end before the solstice. Those stepped-down bars were sunny days; the shorter bars were cloudy and rainy.

Re: Happy Winter Solstice, y'all.
I hate the early sunsets.
When we change time in November, we go from a 5:54pm sunset to a 4:52pm sunset the next day and the shortened days seem to last forever. We have four solid weeks where the sunset is between 4:31pm and 4:35pm. Tomorrow is the last 4:35pm sunset and by Jan 17 - less than 4 weeks from now - we are back up to a 5pm sunset. Psychologically that just makes a big difference to me.
(I know I shouldn't complain too much. For my sister in Seattle, the sunset gets as early as 4:17pm. )

Oh yeah!
We pick up two seconds of daylight tomorrow. By month end, it is up to 30 seconds. We're at 35°50' here in Raisinville.

Happy Winter Solstice, y'all.
NOW can I start complaining about the cold?
Now that winter is officially starting? Real, actual winter?

Edit: Oh, crap. My staff informs me that no, I can never complain about the cold in North Freakin' Carolina, because I'm a big baby. They're saying I lived through the winter of '76-'77 in Burlington, Vermont, and I can just buck up, bucko.
