I used to quote the bit about him having enough funds to send the fleet halfway round the world and Congress would have to pony up the other half of the funds if it wanted the fleet to return. It was my favorite T.R. story.

Sen. Josh Hawley’s (R-Mo.) book on manhood ― called, of course, “Manhood” ― is finally out, and the reviews have not been very kind.

The book has a 1.19 rating on Goodreads after 57 reviews, and 2.4 stars on Amazon.

The word from book reviewers isn’t much better, with Slate’s Rebecca Onion delivering what may be the most scathing one of all.

″[L]ike almost everything Hawley does, the book is an epic disaster,” she wrote. “Why did a man who is probably our leading national pipsqueak decide that promoting manliness was his ticket to political power?”

Of course, I wouldn't expect irony to be understood by a guy who wrote a book about manhood, but it best known for tucking tail and running.

Slavery was ended in virtually every developed country before the US. We were not the leader of a movement to end slavery, we were at the tail end of global emancipation efforts. And other countries were able to ban it without fighting a bloody civil war.
