Authorities in Iceland have officially declared the country’s longest volcanic eruption in 50 years over. The spectacle drew hundreds of thousands of tourists to witness its lava flows.

“It’s been three months since lava last came out, so this eruption is now considered over,” said Bryndís Ýr Gísladóttir, specialist in natural hazards at the Icelandic Meteorological Institute (IMO).

But the agency, which monitors volcanic activity, nevertheless called on hikers to be cautious, and it will continue to monitor the area.

The eruption of lava began on 19 March on the outskirts of Mount Fagradalsfjall, about 25 miles (40km) south-west of the capital Reykjavik.

I bet there is lot of relieve that the lava has stopped and did not overflow down to the sea and disrupt the coastal road, also too a farm owner will be happy to have his place for a few more years.

The tallest mountain in the Galápagos islands has erupted, spewing lava down its flanks and clouds of ash over the Pacific Ocean, according to Ecuador’s Geophysical Institute.

A cloud of gas and ash from Wolf Volcano rose to 3,793 meters (12,444 feet) above sea level after the eruption that began shortly before midnight on Wednesday local time, the institute said.

There was no immediate danger to populated areas, which are located at the opposite side of Isabela island, the largest in the Galápagos chain. But the environment ministry said eight people, including national park guards and scientists doing field work on pink iguanas living on the volcano’s slopes, were evacuated from the area.

The 1,701-meter volcano is one of numerous active volcanos in the Galápagos, which are nearly 1,000km (600 miles) from mainland South America.

Frightened Tongans flee tsunami
Sound from eruption of offshore volcano heard 800km away in Fiji

PUBLISHED : 15 JAN 2022 AT 17:02
WRITER: AFP

Frightened Tongans fled to higher ground on Saturday after a massive volcanic eruption — heard in neighbouring countries — triggered the area’s second tsunami in as many days.

“A 1.2-metre tsunami wave has been observed at Nukualofa,” Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology tweeted. The maximum tsunami wave recorded following Friday’s explosion was 30 centimetres.

The latest eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano came just a few hours after Friday’s tsunami warning was lifted.

Mere Taufa said she was in her house getting ready for dinner when the volcano erupted.

“It was massive, the ground shook, our house was shaking. It came in waves. My younger brother thought bombs were exploding nearby,” Taufa told the Stuff news website.

She said water filled their home minutes later and she saw the wall of a neighbouring house collapse.

“We just knew straight away it was a tsunami. Just water gushing into our home.

“You could just hear screams everywhere, people screaming for safety, for everyone to get to higher ground.”

Tonga’s King Tupou VI was reported to have been evacuated from the Royal Palace in Nuku’alofa and taken by a police convoy to a villa well away from the coastline.

The initial eruption lasted at least eight minutes and sent plumes of gas, ash and smoke several kilometres into the air. Residents in coastal areas were urged to head for higher ground.

The eruption was so intense it was heard as “loud thunder sounds” in Fiji more than 800 kilometres away, officials in Suva said.

Tsunami hits Tonga after underwater volcanic eruption
Waves of 2.7 feet observed by gauges in capital following latest eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai

Associated Press
Sat 15 Jan 2022 11.00 GMT

Tsunami waves caused by an underwater volcano have been observed in Tonga’s capital and the capital of American Samoa.

The eruption at 0410 GMT on Friday of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai underwater volcano, located about 65km (40 miles) north of Tonga’s capital, Nuku’alofa, caused a 1.2-metre tsunami, Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology said.

The agency said it continued to monitor the situation but that no tsunami threat had been issued to the Australian mainland, islands or territories.

Tsunami waves of 2.7 feet (82 cm) were observed by gauges in the Tongan capital, and waves of 2 feet in Pago Pago, the capital of American Samoa, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The US-based monitor later cancelled warnings for the US territory of American Samoa and Hawaii but said the tsunami remained a threat for parts of the Pacific nearer the volcano.

Fiji issued a tsunami warning, urging residents to avoid the shorelines “due to strong currents and dangerous waves”.

La Palma’s volcanic headache: what to do with all the lava and ash

Ashifa Kassam in Madrid
Fri 14 Jan 2022 10.34 GMT

For three months they were subject to whims of a roaring volcano. Now residents on the small Spanish island of La Palma are wrestling with another dilemma: what do with the millions of cubic metres of lava and ash it left behind.

The volcano rumbled for 85 days, ejecting ash and rivers of lava that swallowed more than 1,000 homes, cut off highways and suffocated the lush banana plantations that drive the island’s economy.

The eruption was declared over on Christmas Day, leaving residents grappling with the daunting task of rebuilding. “It’s brutal,” said Javier Moreno, one of La Palma’s 80,000 residents. “The affected area looks as if they erected the Berlin Wall, but made of black lava.”

In recent days about 2,000 of the 7,000 evacuated residents have been allowed to return home. Many arrived to find layers of powdery ash coating their homes, patios and plants – remnants of the more than 200m cubic metres of lava and ash expelled by the volcano.

“It’s a continuous battle,” said Moreno. “You clear it away today, tomorrow the wind blows over a few more centimetres.”

In parts of the island the ash buried homes, engulfed verdant plantations and accumulated in metres-high banks. The lava and ash reached beyond the island; lava cascading into the ocean during the eruptions created two new peninsulas, measuring 44 and five hectares, while underwater footage revealed marine life covered in ash.

Australia’s minister for the Pacific, Zed Seselja, says initial reports suggest no mass casualties in Tonga following the eruption of a volcano that triggered a tsunami, but Australian police have visited beaches with significant damage and “houses thrown around”.

Australia and New Zealand sent surveillance flights on Monday to assess the damage after Tonga was isolated from the rest of the world when Saturday’s eruption blanketed the Pacific Island with ash.

The flights, along with detailed pictures and video, were due back in Australia and New Zealand on Monday evening.

“We know there is some significant damage, and know there is significant damage to resorts,” Seselja said in an interview with an Australian radio station, adding Tonga’s airport appeared to be in relatively good condition.

There was a tsunami watch in place early Sunday morning, but it was cancelled. I slept through it. But there was another warning about surging waves, and some beaches were closed. Of course, the closed beached signs were ignored, so it was a busy day for Kauai lifeguards who saved people who ignored the signs. Everyone lived, some hospitalized after being slammed against rocks or sucked out into the ocean.

Tonga volcano: first pictures after eruption show islands blanketed in ash, as two deaths confirmed
Pictures from a New Zealand defence force surveillance flight and UN satellite images show land and trees coated in ash

by Tess McClure Supported by Judith Nielson Institute

Some of the first images have emerged from Tonga’s volcano and tsunami-hit islands, after a New Zealand defence force surveillance flight returned from the cut-off country, as two deaths from the disaster have been confirmed in Tonga.

Aerial photography of Nomuka, a small island in the southern part of the Haʻapai group, shows land and trees coated with ash and other damage inflicted by the huge undersea volcanic eruption and tsunami that hit the Pacific nation on Saturday.

Satellite imagery analysed by the UN shows similar scenes in Kolomotua, Tongatapu, and Fafaa Village, Kolofo’ou: while some buildings remain standing, others appear to have collapsed, and the entire landscape is coated with grey ash.

At Fua’amotu International Airport, the runway appears to have been inundated, and is partly covered by either ash or dirt. Other satellite images show that flooding came in several blocks from the coastline.

Tongans around the world may be forced to wait weeks for regular contact to resume, after testing confirmed that the cable connecting the islands to the outside world was cut in at least one place.

A spokesperson for Southern Cross Cable, which operates other undersea cable networks across the region, said that testing by Fintel and Tonga Cable on Sunday afternoon “seems to confirm a likely cable break around 37km offshore from Tonga”.
