Mount Etna’s spectacular eruptions reached a peak on Monday when the volcano’s lava fountains soared to 1,500 metres – a display described by one expert as “one of the most striking in the last few decades”.

Europe’s most active volcano has been on explosive form in recent weeks, spewing incandescent magma and a copious shower of ash, reaching as far as Catania.

According to experts, the fireworks show is part of a Strombolian eruption that is among the normal activities of the more than 3,300-metre-high volcano.

“Etna is putting on a show these days,” said Marco Neri, an expert in volcanology and a member of INGV, the Italian national institute for geophysics and volcanology.

I have QuakeFeed on my iPad and there's been several 7+ earthquakes near New Zealand today. One was an 8 :o .

Earthquakes: 'Tsunami activity' alert after 7.4 magnitude Kermadec Islands quake, follows NZ shake
A new "tsunami activity" advisory has been issued for parts of New Zealand after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck near the Kermadec Islands on Friday morning.

It follows a "severe" 7.1 magnitude earthquake east of the North Island earlier, which prompted its own tsunami warning. However, that has since been lifted.

A magnitude 8 earthquake has also struck near the Kermadecs.

A volcano has erupted in Iceland near the capital Reykjavik after thousands of small earthquakes in the area in recent weeks, the Icelandic meteorological office has said.

A red cloud lit up the night sky after the eruption began in Fagradalsfjall on Friday about 40km (25 miles) from the capital Reykjavik. A no-fly zone has been established in the area.

“Volcanic eruption has begun in Fagradalsfjall,” the meteorological office (IMO) said in a tweet on Friday night, referring to a mountain located south-west of the capital.

Streams of red lava could be seen flowing out of a fissure in the ground in video footage filmed by a coast guard helicopter and posted by the IMO on Twitter.

A strong earthquake hit off northern Japan, shaking buildings even in Tokyo and briefly triggering a tsunami advisory for a part of the northern coast. No major damage was reported but there were three minor injuries. Some areas had a temporary blackout.

A volcano in southwest Iceland that has long been dormant began erupting Friday night, spilling lava down two sides but officials said it appears small and was not considered a threat to any towns.

The eruption on Reykjanes Peninsula, which began around 8:45 p.m. local time (4:45 p.m. ET) was seen on a web camera and later confirmed, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said in a statement.

"The eruption is considered small at this stage," it said on Twitter, estimating that the fissure was around 500 meters, or 1,640 feet, long. While a distinct orange glow could be seen in the low cloud on the peninsula.

Early Saturday, the Meteorological Office said the "volcanic activity has somewhat decreased," and the "lava fountains are small."

:snippity:

Iceland's Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir said the eruption was not considered a threat to any towns, but officials were closely monitoring events.

The capital Reykjavík is about 20 miles away.
It had been dormant for 6,000 years.

I saw a photo on Facebook on one of my Iceland feeds where you could see the red sky from the volcano and green from the Northern Lights. It was awesome, but I couldn't copy it.

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - A volcano in Iceland spewing lava into the sky since it erupted last Friday could continue its spectacular display for years, potentially becoming a new tourist attraction on the island known for its natural wonders.

Thousands of Icelanders have flocked to the site of the eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula, some 30 kilometres southwest of the capital, hoping to be awed by the rare lava fountains and even to cook a meal on the scorching crust of magma.

Drone footage filmed over the crater shows the molten lava bubbling and spurting, and gushing down the sides of the volcano.

“It’s a perfect tourist eruption,” volcanology professor at the University of Iceland, Thorvaldur Thordarson, told Reuters.

“With the caveat though, don’t go too close.”

To cope with the hoard of visitors, authorities in Iceland set up a 3.5 kilometre (2.2 miles) hiking trail to the eruption site and are patrolling the area to prevent onlookers from venturing into hazardous areas polluted by volcanic gasses.
I'd much rather hike out to see this than the stupid crashed airplane that draws so many tourists.

Los Angeles area rattled by trio of earthquakes
"It rumbled the house," Dorothy Allen, a resident, told NBC Los Angeles.

A trio of earthquakes rattled the Los Angeles area early Monday morning with the largest reaching a 4.0 magnitude.

The quake was recorded at 7:44 a.m. ET and centered in the Lennox area, according to the United States Geological Survey. The large temblor was felt across Southern California.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a tweet that “a 4.0 earthquake in Inglewood shook the L.A. area this morning,” and the Los Angeles Fire Department conducted a survey of the city and “reports no damage.”

Before, two earthquakes with magnitudes of 3.3 and 2.5 jolted the same area around 7:15 a.m. ET.

Reykjavík. The view from the top of the church would be fabulous. More fissures have opened, but it's no threat to Reykjavík.

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent and the Grenadines — A volcano in the southern Caribbean that had been dormant for decades erupted on Friday, spewing clouds of ash and smoke miles into the sky. The volcano, known as La Soufrière, on the northern tip of the main island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which began showing signs of renewed activity in late December, moved into an “explosive state” in the morning, the National Emergency Management Organization said in a Twitter posting.

The eruption came a day after officials had raised the alert level following several small tremors detected at the volcano, with clouds of steam seen erupting from its peak. The country’s prime minister, Ralph Gonsalves, ordered a full evacuation of the area. “All arrangements have now kick-started and the process begins,” Mr. Gonsalves said at a news conference. The population on the main island of St. Vincent had been on edge for months in fear of a eruption.

Some still vividly recalled La Soufrière’s last eruption, in 1979, which hurled debris thousands of feet but caused no fatalities thanks to a hastily arranged evacuation of residents to local beaches. Its ash reached as far as Barbados, 100 miles east. An earlier eruption, in 1902, killed nearly 1,700 people. Cecilia Jewett, 72, a roads supervisor with the government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, said she suffered through the 1979 eruption and recalled the scenes of panic and the desperate scramble for water, the sky darkened by ash and the overpowering stench of sulfur.

Her father, she said, experienced the deadly 1902 event, and told stories of victims buried in ash, and corpses lying in the streets. “Those stories come back to my mind on hearing that the La Soufrière was acting up,” she recalled when interviewed last December. “It’s just too much. These young people would not understand. They think it’s just an explosion.” “The sulfur, what it does to your eyes, your breathing, your very existence,” she continued. “It was a time I would not want to relive.”

[The former guy]They should have been maintaining the volcano better, lava proofing the town, and raking the sides of the volcano. They could have done this if they were not sending their population north to invade America.

I saw that collapse when it happened (from home), which is why I’ve been cringing when people have been walking right up to it. Erupting volcanoes like that collapse unpredictably. You don’t want to be thatclose when it does.

Great video. I've been following this pretty closely. I'm on several Iceland FB groups, so I see it regularly. Someone posted a photo of the valley before and after the eruption. Wow!

Wow! That's really going high up into the air! I was watching a video earlier of the hike (on the easy route) to the volcano. When I'm awake tomorrow, I'll see if I can find it. It looked like a fairly strenuous hike up and over rough ground to see it. It looked worth the hike. We are thinking of going to Iceland this year, but we won't be making that journey. Hubby has two knees that need replaced.

It was 13 years ago while living blissfully ignorant in Futaleufu, Patagonia Chile, that Mister and I got schooled in volcanic eruptions. We knew tornados from our childhoods in the midwest, hurricanes in FloriDuh, and earthquakes in Central America. But the big boom and day we woke to the Chaitain Volcano eruption had no reference.

The ash fell for a week. Then rain, then snow and freezing weather. In a place where gasoline and diesel was four hours away and there were no roads from Central Chile, it was an experience in gut fortitude. Most villagers had relatives in Argentina, the nearest escape route. We stayed and helped rescue animals along with rescue workers and other hearty hold-outs. We wrangled left-behind pets and chickens, cooked for Doctors without Borders, helped shovel off roofs heavy with ash.

The rains brought lajars and the snow piled up later then everything froze. Thank god for supplies of boxed wine.

Southern Chile villages sent military vehicles with water and Argentina sent food. Cops checked in everyday with all of us who stayed behind and brought masks. For four months the utilities were free including internet.

It seems surreal that it was just 13 years ago. A long time, and yesterday.
