The huge undersea volcano eruption severed Tonga’s single fiber-optic cable, rendering the entire Pacific archipelago offline and unable to communicate with the rest of the world - and it left their loved ones terrified about what might have happened.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Two moderate earthquakes shook southwest Haiti on Monday, killing two people and damaging homes as it created panic and prompted schools and businesses to close.

A magnitude 5.3 quake at 8:16 a.m. (1316 GMT) was followed by a magnitude 5.1 quake nearly an hour later. Both were centered on Haiti's southern peninsula, west of the capital, Port-au-Prince, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It said both were centered about 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the surface.

Haiti's civil protection agency said at least two people died and two others were injured, with at least 35 homes reportedly damaged.

Mount Etna has roared back to spectacular action after a few months of relative quiet, sending up a 12-kilometer (7.5-mile) high volcanic ash cloud over eastern Sicily.

The lava flow from Etna, one of Europe’s most active volcanoes, was centered around the crater on the mountain’s southeast slope, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology said Monday.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage on the inhabited towns ringing the slopes of the volcano, which is popular with hikers, skiers and other tourists.

By Monday afternoon, the lava flow from the crater had stopped, the institute said. But earlier in the day, while the volcanic cloud was pouring out of Etna, the institute issued a warning for aircraft in the area.

Largest Marsquake Ever Recorded May Be InSight’s Swan Song
NASA’s three-and-a-half-year mission to collect seismic data from Mars is running out of juice

By Joanna Thompson on May 24, 2022

On May 4, three-and-a-half years into its mission, NASA’s InSight lander registered the largest “marsquake” ever detected. The magnitude 5.0 quake was nearly 10 times more powerful than the previous record-holding Red Planet temblor, reaching the upper limits of what NASA geologists had dreamed of finding on Mars. And it may prove to be the mission’s swan song.

Less than two weeks after the record-shattering quake, NASA announced that InSight is in trouble—not from seismic activity but from a slowly accumulating layer of rust-red dust on its solar panels. Barring a serendipitous gust of wind to clear the dust, the lander could be dead by early to mid-July. Now NASA engineers are hustling to gather as much data as they can during InSight’s remaining time.

InSight has faced a host of unique challenges since making planetfall on Mars in late 2018. On Earth, geologists usually collect quake data using suites of strategically placed seismic stations that are located in geologically active areas and firmly anchored in the ground to shelter them from the excess vibrations caused by wind, water and people milling around.

In contrast, “on Mars, we only have this one seismometer,” says Ingrid Daubar, a planetary scientist at Brown University, who helped plan InSight’s objectives. That makes it difficult to pinpoint where, exactly, a quake is coming from.

In addition to being restricted a single station, most of InSight’s equipment sits aboveground because burying it would be exceptionally difficult. “You can’t send a backhoe to Mars,” says Suzan van der Lee, a seismologist at Northwestern University, who was not involved with the InSight mission. Even with its wind and solar shields deployed, InSight’s equipment is still prone to picking up noise from natural phenomena that Earth seismometers simply don’t have to deal with.

An American tourist fell into Mount Vesuvius, an active volcano in Italy, after trespassing to take a selfie, officials said.

The 23-year-old man, who dropped his phone and tried to retrieve it after the selfie, fell several meters into the ash of the crater before being saved by nearby park officials on Saturday.

He sustained only minor injuries, officials said.

The man, who has not been named, allegedly walked on an unauthorized path to reach the summit of Mount Vesuvius at 1,281 meters, according to a spokesperson from the Carabinieri of the Forestry department of the Park of Vesuvius.

The spokesperson told ABC News he believes the man went on the unmarked path because tickets for visiting Vesuvius, which are limited to 2,700 a day, were all booked.

A new one? I think that there was another one that flared up this summer, but I thought that quit after two weeks. I'll have to check it out.

Mostly we'll get vog. Coughing, congestion, headaches, etc. It can blow over all the islands. Get out the sudafed!

The lava flows are slow, so there's time to get out of the way. My friends and I used to love driving to the flows and watching it creep down the mountain and across streets to the beaches. But it will be sad if more houses are claimed by Pele.

Tongan volcano eruption 'largest ever recorded,' New Zealand scientists say

https://abcnews.go.com/International/to ... d=93708595
A New Zealand-led team of marine geologists investigating an underwater volcano that erupted on Jan. 15 in the Tongan archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean have found that it was the “largest ever recorded” with modern equipment.

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano, which triggered a tsunami and a sonic boom that twice-circled the globe, was captured in dramatic satellite imagery which showed huge cloud of ash and steam thrust into the atmosphere.

A team of oceanographers, scientists and marine geologists headed by the New Zealand National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), with assistance from a robot boat remotely operated in the UK by Sea-Kit International, have conducted the “fullest investigation yet” into the underwater Tongan volcano. They discovered that almost 10 cubic kilometres of seafloor was displaced -- the equivalent of 2.6 million Olympic-sized pools.

“The eruption reached record heights, being the first we’ve ever seen to break through into the mesosphere,” said Kevin Mackay, NWA marine geologist. “It was like a shotgun blast directly into the sky.”

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, has started to erupt for the first time in nearly four decades, prompting volcanic ash and debris to fall nearby, authorities said Monday.

The eruption began late Sunday night in the summit caldera of the volcano on the Big Island, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Early Monday, it said lava flows were contained within the summit area and weren’t threatening nearby communities.

“However, lava flows in the summit region are visible from Kona. There is currently no indication of any migration of the eruption into a rift zone,” the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said in a statement. A rift zone is where the mountain is splitting apart, the rock is cracked and relatively weak and it’s easier for magma to emerge.

How long the volcano erupts and whether it could cause lava to flow to populated areas of the island is impossible to predict, said Miel Corbett, a USGS spokesperson.
