At least 296 people were killed after a forceful, 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook Morocco late Friday, according to the national news agency, citing the country’s Interior Ministry. The quake struck at 11:11 p.m. local time, about 44 miles (75 kilometers) southeast of Marrakesh, and sent panicked residents in several cities fleeing to the streets in search of safety.

Marrakesh was among the most affected cities, according to local media, although the shock was also felt in other cities, including in Casablanca, Rabat, and Fez.

Bad situation in Marroco
Death toll rises to 820, state TV says

The death toll has risen to 820, Moroccan state television quotes the iInterior ministry as saying. At least 672 people were injured, including 205 in serious condition, in the quake, it adds.

Here’s a summary of the main developments:

At least 820 people have been killed in Morocco after a powerful earthquake hit several towns and cities, the interior ministry told state TV, adding that at least 672 more have been injured. A search for survivors continues.
A local official said most deaths were in mountainous areas that were hard to reach.
It was Morocco’s deadliest since at least a 2004 tremor in the northern Rif mountains that killed more than 600 people.
Scientists said the earthquake, which was centred in Ighil, measured at least 6.8 magnitude, though some readings have it higher. It was said to be a relatively shallow earthquake – usually the most destructive sort.
In Marrakech, some buildings in the old city, a Unesco world heritage site, have been damaged or destroyed.
Several world leaders, including Emmanuel Macron, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Narendra Modi and Olaf Scholz have sent messages of support.

The earthquake is the strongest to hit the north African kingdom, Agence-France Presse reports. One expert said it was the region’s “biggest in more than 120 years”.

“Where destructive earthquakes are rare, buildings are simply not constructed robustly enough ... so many collapse, resulting in high casualties,” said Bill McGuire, a professor emeritus at Britain’s University College London.

Morocco earthquake: mourning begins as rescue continues with death toll over 2,000
Villagers bury their dead while Red Cross warns recovery may take years and other countries offer aid

Earthquake rescue efforts are continuing in Morocco as the country began three days of mourning for the victims of a disaster that killed more than 2,000 people and flattened buildings in cities and villages.

Friday’s 6.8-magnitude quake, Morocco’s deadliest in more than six decades, had an epicentre below a remote cluster of mountainous villages 45 miles south of Marrakech, and shook infrastructure as far away as the country’s northern coast.

The government reported that at least 2,012 people were killed and more than 2,059 injured, many of them critically. In Marrakech, many people slept outside on pavements and in squares, fearing returning to their homes.

Military forces and emergency services rushed to reach remote villages where many more victims were feared trapped.

Drone footage of villages close to the epicentre broadcast on the local 2M television channel showed clusters of clay homes built into the mountainside, with many buildings collapsed. A reporter with 2M speaking from the town of Adassil, in the Atlas mountains, said at least four aftershocks had been felt in the area.

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI chaired an emergency disaster response meeting on Saturday afternoon and declared three days of national mourning. Civil protection units were deployed to increase stocks in blood banks and ensure the supply of resources including water, food, tents and blankets to affected areas, the palace said.

Kīlauea began erupting this afternoon, serving as a solemn reminder of the sacredness ingrained in this landscape, symbolizing the presence of the akua, the spiritual forces of Hawaiʻi. The privilege to witness the creative forces of a new eruption comes with a responsibility to approach this place with reverence.
We implore all visitors heading to the area to exercise the highest level of respect. While eruptions can spark excitement, it is imperative that observation occurs in silence, allowing the eruption's voice to reach you. Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners, who honor the legacy of this land, deserve unreserved respect for their customs.

Hawaii Volcano Videos Show Lava Erupting as 'Red' Warning Issued

https://www.newsweek.com/hawaii-volcano ... 94416396-1
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) observatory in Hawaii has raised the alert level for the Kilauea volcano after it began erupting on Sunday afternoon.

The observatory raised its volcano alert from "watch" to "warning" and upgraded its aviation alert level from orange to red to warn nearby aircraft about the hazard.

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said on Sunday evening that, at the time, the lava was confined to the summit and "does not pose a... threat to communities," but warned that particles and gases being emitted from the eruption could cause "breathing problems for people exposed." The USGS said carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide were the primary concerns.

Officials said the volcano began its eruption at around 3:15 p.m. local time (9:15 p.m. ET) on Sunday within the Halemaʻumaʻu crater, to the east of Kilauea's summit caldera. USGS added that the eruption "was preceded by a period of strong seismicity and rapid uplift of the summit."

The volcano wrecks the air across most of the island even if lava stays in the volcano. Sudafed was the best medicine to ease the breathing problems when I lived there.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/20 ... reign-aid/
Governments far and wide have offered aid to Morocco following a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that has left more than 2,500 people dead and thousands injured and displaced.

But, to the bafflement of officials abroad, Morocco has been slow to accept support.

Countries including France, Germany, Italy and the United States, along with the United Nations, said they were waiting to provide any help they could after Friday’s devastating earthquake in the High Atlas Mountains.

The Moroccan Interior Ministry said in a statement Sunday that it would initially accept search-and-rescue teams only from Britain, Qatar, Spain and the United Arab Emirates — which it called “friendly countries” — after taking into account the “needs of the field.”

But Morocco also appeared slow to take up offers of broader humanitarian and technical assistance. Washington “reached out immediately to the Moroccan government to offer any assistance that we can provide,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sunday on CNN. “We await word from the Moroccan government to find out how we can help, where we can help,” Blinken said.

The U.S. Agency for International Development did not immediately respond to a request on Monday on whether it had yet mobilized any teams or assistance.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — One day after powerful earthquakes struck western Afghanistan, officials said Sunday that more than 2,000 people were killed and thousands injured, with the death toll likely to rise.

“Many are still trapped,” said Haji Janan Saiq, a spokesman for the Taliban-run Ministry of Disaster Management who announced the toll in a news conference. Several villages have “completely perished.”

Aid groups and hospital officials provided a lower number of confirmed fatalities. The Afghan Red Crescent Society cautioned that it remained difficult to verify the full extent of the damage, with a spokesman for the aid group, Irfanullah Sharafzoi, putting the death toll at 400 on Sunday morning. Muhammad Talib Shahid, a health official in the western Afghan city of Herat, said 250 bodies of victims had been brought to hospitals close to the epicenter of the quake.

One of Iceland’s most popular tourist attractions has closed after the Reykjanes peninsula was hit by about 1,400 earthquakes in 24 hours, a “seismic swarm” that has prompted fears of an imminent volcanic eruption.

The Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa south-west of Reykjavík, announced it would close its doors on Thursday for a week after a particularly powerful earthquake hit just after midnight followed by about 800 smaller quakes.

Dozens of terrified guests reportedly fled the resort, which has two hotels, in taxis overnight after the earthquakes began. The Icelandic news website Víkurfréttir reported that about 40 guests had left overnight, adding that rocks had fallen on the road up to the hotel lobby.

The Blue Lagoon said it had made a “proactive decision to temporarily close its operations for one week” because of the “disruption” to guests on Wednesday night and the “prolonged strain on our employees”.

“Blue Lagoon will closely monitor the developments of seismic activity in the upcoming days and reevaluate the situation accordingly,” it added in a statement.

The Reykjanes peninsula has been on alert in recent weeks after a period of seismic disruption started on 25 October, prompting Iceland’s civil protection agency to issue an “uncertainty phase” warning – an alert level referring to an event that has already started and could lead to a potential threat to people, properties, communities or the environment.

w/o link: from other sources I take it that the tip of the potential volcano has risen 2 - 3 feet over the last months, it's not just the earthquake that is of concern.

Well, this is Iceland, where you pretty much can't have one without the other.

I've been in the Blue Lagoon. I can imagine just how scary that would be.

Japan gets a new island after undersea volcano erupts

Japan has gained another island to add to its already impressive collection, after an undersea volcanic eruption 1,200km (745 miles) south of Tokyo created a new landmass.

Experts said the tiny island emerged after a series of eruptions that began in October near Iwoto island, part of the Ogasawara island chain in the western Pacific.

Fukashi Maeno, an associate professor at Tokyo University’s earthquake research institute, said he had confirmed that phreatomagmatic eruptions – a type of explosive eruption that results from magma interacting with water – had occurred about a kilometre off Iwoto, forming a landmass of about 100 metres in diameter.

Maeno, who flew over the site at the end of October, told the Kyodo news agency that plumes of smoke and ash of more than 50 metres high rose every few minutes during the eruptions.

He also witnessed large rocks hurtling through the air and bands of brown pumice stones floating in the sea, which had changed colour as a result of the eruption, Kyodo reported.

Current seismic activity in Iceland...

Green stars on this map indicate earthquakes of 3.0 on the Richter Scale or greater. I've been watching this map for 2 to 3 years now. Usually there are no stars, sometimes a few. This is really exceptional. Roads are buckling, blocking some evacuation routes for Grindavik.
