Question: when has a candidate to physically take residence in the state he / she is running for (i guess rules will differ among states) and not only hiding behind a postbox at a barn.

I dunno, ask Josh Hawley. The U.S. Constitution just says a resident at the time of the election.

I'd be curious to see if these people file resident state income tax returns as opposed to non-resident (assuming they have property sourced in those states.)

I'd have to scurry through my materials, but I think that DC provides an exemption for people working in the District who live elsewhere as long as they file personal returns in those states. I know that two of my clients have a law practice in DC but file in their states of residence (Maryland and Virginia.) I assume the same rule applies to politicians and their elk.

A candidate in Pennsylvania buying gas in New Jersey, and then listing it as a campaign expenditure, plays into the carpetbagger story.
