Stelter is out.
Brian Stelter to depart CNN as it cancels 'Reliable Sources' media show
August 18, 2022 1:22 PM ET

CNN is canceling its Sunday media affairs show Reliable Sources, and host Brian Stelter is departing the network, Stelter tells NPR. In a statement to NPR, Stelter says he's grateful for the show and his team's examination of "the media, truth and the stories that shape our world." "It was a rare privilege to lead a weekly show focused on the press at a time when it has never been more consequential," Stelter said, promising to say more on Sunday's show — its final episode. Stelter got his start blogging about cable news as a student and went on to become a media reporter for The New York Times. Reliable Sources is the longest-running show on CNN; Stelter has hosted it for the past nine years and celebrated its 30th anniversary in March.

CNN chief Chris Licht informed Stelter of the decision yesterday. Licht has been making cuts throughout the network since taking the helm as part of Warner Bros. Discovery's takeover of the old Time Warner company. Stelter, who often touted the show's ratings on Twitter, was among those CNN hosts targeted for frequent criticism from conservatives for his coverage of the media in the Trump years. Among those publicly joining in on the broader criticism of CNN as having become politicized was the investor John Malone, a major financial stakeholder of the new WarnerDiscovery conglomerate. In an episode on February, Stelter cited Malone more than a dozen times in coverage of the Discovery deal for CNN and its sister properties, expressing some concern about the investor's influence.

"Stelter came to CNN from the New York Times as the nation's top media reporter. He departs CNN an impeccable broadcaster," Amy Entelis, CNN's executive vice president for talent and content development. "We are proud of what Brian and his team accomplished over the years, and we're confident their impact and influence will long outlive the show." A corporate spokesperson confirmed the show's demise and said the network wished Stelter well in his future endeavors.

That's nuts. I've really enjoyed his work, and his show was one of the few things I might watch on CNN. I hope someone snaps him up. (I'd love it if he moved to MSNBC...)

Anybody watched Alex Wagner yet? I've always liked her, so I'm happy with her in her new position. The program last night, particularly the part about Florida's teacher/student indoctrination, was very well done.

Agree, Alex Wagner is doing a great job so far. Opening night's opening was rough with tech problems but they all got worked out.

Stephen King and Mark Hamill both posted how much they liked Brian's show. He's doing one final Reliable Sources on Sunday, we'll definitely be watching. RS is the longest continuously running CNN show (Inside Politics was longer but off the air for several years), they just had their 30th anniversary. We need media criticism. They could have replaced Stelter and kept it going... now it's only Fox News running a show like that. Sigh.

As has been mentioned a couple of times, Keith Olbermann rebooted Countdown as a daily (five days a week) podcast on Aug 1.

I've been binging over the weekend, and I have to say I've been in hog heaven. Or maybe liberal-porn heaven.

Yes, he gets enough wrong to warrant a fact check on anything you want to quote in public, but damn, the man is good at what he does. It takes him a few episodes to get going at fell steam, but the mix of word play, delivery, humor, sports, and irritated progressive fury floats my damn boat.

Episodes are 35 to 45 minutes long. He's only 63 (yeah, I was surprised too), and has been in radio/tv for over forty years. He has tales to tell, and he tells them all. Including the various Maddow controversies, and his adventures in sports radio.

Speaking of radio, this show brings me back to the days of Jean Shepherd (sp). This man is a story teller.

My favorite Olbermann moment is when he went on Letterman's show to cover for John McCain who had canceled on Letterman to run back to the Capitol to help fix the economy that was going sown the tubes. Then About 5:40 in Letterman cuts over to Katie Couric's feed where she is prepping to interview... John McCain sitting beside her at the table. Letterman has the beginnings of what would become a 3 week storm of incandescent rage about it.

The whole thing is worth a watch.

 Gosh, hadn't thought about how mad Dave was about the McCain thing in years but totally remember how pissed off he was. He dragged McCain through it night after night. McCain was already brunt toast but it helped throw dirt in the hole he was in.

Here's the final segment of Reliable Sources, still looking for the full episode. Over 30 years, the show had some great moments. We need more media accountability programming.

@aravosis
The new head of CNN, John Malone, just said he plans to move CNN to the right. This is clearly why
@brianstelter
was fired, and his show canceled. And this is clearly all about Donald Trump. Malone isn’t happy that CNN has been holding Trump accountable. This is a disaster.

Great, just what we need - FOX 2. Hopefully a lot of their talent will decide they can't be a part of that kind of crap and will find (or help create, perhaps?) a closer-to-neutral source or maybe get snapped up by MSNBC.

It may not be quite that easy, I recall when Sinclair Broadcasting took over KOMO News in Seattle some years ago and went to the right, you didn't see the anchors bailing. Seattle Times did a really good article on it and there are complications with things like contracts and it's not that easy to walk away.

Not saying that will happen here if CNN makes a big change to the right, but we'll have to wait and see.

this is what CNN is running this morning during Brian Stelter's former timeslot
I'd say rerunning since this show first airs at 5AM (my time) each Sunday.

I don't mind if they have people like Scott Jennings and that Butterbean looking guy on, but they need to get rid of the person who keeps trying to platform Mick Mulvaney.

CNN’s morning show is undergoing a major shake-up — one that leaves another conspicuous gap in its prime-time block.

Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins will host a new morning program, the cable network announced Thursday. It’s one of the biggest moves by new CNN boss Chris Licht since he assumed the role earlier this year.

“This is not an incremental change. Our morning news program will debut with a new name, new set, and a totally new format,” Licht wrote in a note to staff. “The show will lean into the strength of CNN’s global brand, and I am confident America will soon see how genuine the chemistry is among these three remarkable anchors.”

The shake-up means there will be another open slot in the network’s high-profile prime-time hours. Lemon has been hosting the 10 p.m. hour since 2014, and his program, “Don Lemon Tonight,” will go off the air once he makes the transition.

Meanwhile, CNN hasn’t yet determined what to do with its 9 p.m. hour since Chris Cuomo was fired in December. Licht promised that details on when the new morning format will debut and plans for the network’s 9 p.m. to midnight hours “will be shared in the weeks ahead.”

Harlow has most recently anchored “CNN Newsroom” from 9 to 11 a.m., while Collins has served as CNN’s chief White House correspondent. “New Day’s” current hosts, John Berman and Brianna Keilar, will take on new roles at the network that will be announced later this year, Licht wrote.

Doesn't seem like they're changing much of anything. Tapper is irritating, against Hannity and Maddow/Wagner sounds like a ticket to fail.
CNN Sets New Primetime Lineup Through Midterms, Headlined by Jake Tapper at 9 PM
By A.J. Katz on Sep. 22, 2022 - 9:05 AM

CNN today announced a fall programming lineup that will last through the 2022 Midterm Elections. The new schedule will go into effect October 10 and continue through the week of the November 8 elections.

Jake Tapper will host the network’s 9 p.m. ET hour from Washington D.C. CNN Newsroom anchor Alisyn Camerota and CNN Senior Legal Analyst Laura Coates will share anchor responsibilities from 10 p.m.-12 a.m., the hours hosted by Don Lemon, who is moving to mornings with Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins.

Lemon and Harlow will leave their respective primetime and mid-morning offerings after Oct. 7.

The 9 p.m.-12 a.m. ET hours will be referred to as CNN Tonight.

“The world has come to rely on Jake’s no-nonsense approach to covering the news, especially during high-stakes election cycles,” CNN chairman and CEO Chris Licht said in a statement. “This move will showcase his tough reporting, smart analysis and consequential interviews as our audiences navigate the myriad of issues at stake in the midterms. By adding the insights, experience and strong voices of Alisyn and Laura, we will advance and expand on that coverage, creating something complimentary and compelling in primetime.”

Throughout the special programming schedule, CNN New Day anchors John Berman and Brianna Keilar will each fill in for Tapper on 4 p.m. ET hour of The Lead. The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer will pick up an hour, expanding its footprint to 5-7 p.m. ET nightly. Erin Burnett OutFront and Anderson Cooper 360 will remain in their respective timeslots of 7 and 8 p.m. ET.

Now that CNN is owned by Warner/Discover (or whatever the official name is), I'm noticing a serious uptick in commercials for Discovery Plus shows. Overkill, really

Sundance Liked Her Documentary on Terrorism, Until Muslim Critics Didn’t

The film festival gave Meg Smaker’s “Jihad Rehab” a coveted spot in its 2022 lineup, but apologized after an outcry over her race and her approach.
That's all I can access without a sub, but apparently the documentary is thoughtful and intelligent. But Muslim critics didn't like it and killed it with a variation on the "only a {Class}Woman {Subclass}who agrees with abortion{/Subclass}{/Class} is allowed to talk about abortion," argument. And Sundance didn't have the conviction to tell them to eff off in the face of an absurd argument.
