Saw Gordon perform this live 3 years ago, he was 89 years old and I thought he sang it and felt it like he lost somebody on that ship.

When I moved up to Frankfort, Michigan (Northwest Lower Michigan) and November rolled around, I then understood what they meant by the November Gales.

That song actually makes me homesick for the Northland.

I spent three years (not including summers) at Michigan Tech. I was lifted off my feet on more than one occasion by the November Gales. (The Keweenaw Peninsula sticks out into the middle of Superior, and a canal cuts right through the middle, this is where Tech is situated. The canal and the layout of campus creates a windtunnel effect). Granted, I was wearing a full-circle greatcloak when it happened.

May have saved my life. A 10' strip of metal roofing (basically siding but on top of the crosswalk structure) went right through where I had been. Th wind was so strong that I picked it up at one end and didn't have to drag it while I took it into the nearest entrance.

I have never seen Lake Superior and it is on my bucket list but certainly not in Houghton Mi. in November.

Thanks for posting The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald. One of the most beautiful songs ever. I can't believe that Lightfoot is now about 92 years old. IIRC he was a legendary boozer

I've been to the shipwreck museum on whitefish point and it is some thing.

I've also been to the north shore area in Minnesota and went over for a day trip to Isle Royale. I so want to go back.

Aww come on! I’m up here in the area right now! Only wore my down parka once this year and haven’t even put in the gloves nestled in the pockets yet!!!

You forgot to mention that to folks up north, 25 and blowing snow only requires a light spring jacket. Some southerners are a bit more sensitive to cold.

Now, if you want to see somebody not handle the weather well, watch me in high heat. I'm not as pleasant to be around then.

Jem's not kidding. Somewhere I have a photo of Tech students sunbathing on snowbanks, with the KERCHUNK sign reading 33^oF.

Being the young son of a Navy man, I grew up singing about men lost at sea. Many years before the Edmund Fitzgerald sank, I watched my father sail away for months, or even a year at sea, and we'd go to church and sing and pray to God about those in peril on the sea. And hope God was listening ...

Its own appointed limits keep;
O hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea.

But I was lucky. My dad always came home.

That hymn was performed by the Great Lakes Naval Base choir at my son's graduation from boot camp. I dissolved into floods of tears.
