When looking at the pumpkin traffic on Google maps earlier I noticed that traffic in Riverhead seemed especially bad but didn't know why.

This is why-

Yes, but turkey hunting is not allowed on Long Island. ;) Most hunting is not allowed.

After two gorgeous fall days, Sunday afternoon here is cool and rainy. :( On the bright side there is no pumpkin traffic. ;) Indeed there isn't much traffic of any kind.

Nine days left until we leave on the drive back to Texoma.

Rain is slowing some of our shutting down activities. Can't put away outdoor furniture when it is soaking wet.

For the moment the rain has stopped but fog is rolling in.

Even Mrs. V is beginning to look forward to getting home. ;)

More rain in the forecast but at the moment the morning fog has lifted. We have a humid sunny morning with temperatures in the mid 60s.

Too wet for mowing or leaf blowing but the city trash trucks are making their rounds.

We have one last visitor coming this week. Mrs. V's BFF since before she was born should at long last be here Thursday.

Now 8 pm. Temperature 65F.

Tonight's rain hasn't started yet. Oldies station reporting that they can not see across their cove due to fog, 99% RH.

(I don't think that I have mentioned that the Oldies station frequently apologies before playing commercials. They really don't need to. Some of the local commercials are hilarious.)

After many dark evenings someone is staying at the Airbnb across the Circle which is again brightly lighted.

Podiatrist tomorrow early so will have to set the alarm. :(

Two fatalities on LIRR tracks, one yesterday and one today so the trains are still running late.

"Unauthorised person on the tracks."

I was about 5 when I was taught never to walk along train tracks.

Based on previous cases I will not be surprised to learn that alcohol was involved.

Back from the podiatrist.

Even though it is going on noon the fog is getting thicker right now. :o

After 4 rainy foggy days the sun has returned.

It is breezy and leaves are falling almost continually.

Our lawn service is here blowing the leaves.

Rather like shoveling snow in the middle of the storm. ;)

Spent this afternoon with our handyman closing the hard to reach shutters and putting away the heavy lawn furniture.

Don't think that Mrs. V and I could do that by ourselves anymore.

Definitely going back to physical therapy once we get back to Texoma.

Nice fall weather today but traffic has been light. By now everybody has their pumpkins. ;) Most Halloween parties were Friday or Saturday so tomorrow will be low key.

On to Thanksgiving!

To our surprise after coming here on our usual day last Thursday our lawn service is now here again today.

Perhaps they are trying to stay ahead of the falling leaves.

Today we packed and left the North Fork for the winter.

Crossing NYC in rush hour facing a bright setting sun may have done permanent damage to my eyes and nerves. ;)

Tonight we are in Chambersburg PA.

Tomorrow on to Knoxville.

Yes. As we left much of the North Fork was getting ready to shut down for the winter. The Modern Snack Bar was taking orders for Thanksgiving pies and mashed turnips. Then they close until spring while the owners head south to Florida for a few months.

Most of the farm stands are closing now.

The wineries, breweries and distilleries will only open on weekends.

Marinas are pulling boats out of the water for the winter.

Scallop season has started but there is no word yet on how many scallops will be found. The last few years were terrible. I haven't had the Pearls of the Peconic for some years now. :(

At least you will be done with neighbors lawn mowing and land landscapers leaf blowering. There's that. Quiet.

Another bad year for Peconic Bay scallops. :(

For scallop lovers, the season begins poorly

https://suffolktimes.timesreview.com/20 ... njmuoQizcg
When the bay scallop season opened in New York State waters Monday, there were few surprises. Keith Reda, general manager at Braun Seafood Company in Cutchogue, summed it up: “I heard through the grapevine that this wasn’t going to be a great year. A lot of guys did not go; there are things they can do that are more lucrative.”

For the few Peconic Bay scallops Braun’s had to sell, the price was $39 a pound, about twice the price on opening day in 2018, but about $10 a pound less than fresh bay scallops from Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

The urge to fish for wild Peconic Bay scallops on opening day only makes sense to people who remember when bay scallops washed up in mounds on the beach when the wind blew hard. A time when you might skip school or call in sick to go scalloping because you could buy a new truck and buy Christmas presents with the proceeds. Those days are 30 years gone.

For four years in a row, a raft of troubles, mostly caused by a warming climate, have killed adult bay scallops in local waters. In 2022, most of the adult scallop population died suddenly during the summer, putting every bayman on alert that this November, there would be no miraculous comeback.
