Just watched the soccer match between the US Women's National team and the Irish Women's National team held in Austin today. US won 2-0.

Our daughter and SIL got tickets. They drove down for the game and will spend the night. Front row seats near midfield. $150 each. Sold out crowd.

A serious knee injury sent a US player to the hospital. :(

The injury happened right in front of our daughter and SIL. They could see that the knee was dislocated. Too bad especially since the World Cup is coming up this summer. We all hope she will be OK.

View from their seats.

Swanson injures left knee in US match against Ireland

https://apnews.com/article/womens-world ... da503f6bae
Forward Mallory Swanson was carted off the field during the first half of the United States’ exhibition match Saturday against Ireland with an apparent left knee injury, a blow to the national team ahead of this summer’s Women’s World Cup.

Swanson was the team’s leading scorer this year with seven total goals and a six-game scoring streak, tied for fourth longest in team history.

Swanson was hurt in the 40th minute of the game after contact with an Irish player. She cried out in pain as her teammates signaled to the sidelines for the training staff.

U.S. Soccer said she was taken to a hospital. There were no further details available.

The game was the first of two matches between the United States and Ireland. They are the last international matches before U.S. coach Vlatko Andonovski will name a roster for the World Cup. The second match is set for Tuesday in St. Louis.

Taking a look back for the 44th anniversary of Terrible Tuesday

https://www.newschannel6now.com/2023/04 ... e-tuesday/
Monday, Apr. 10th is the 44th anniversary of Terrible Tuesday, the day an F-4 tornado devastated the city of Wichita Falls.

Over 40 lives were lost, 1,000 homes destroyed, and 3,000 injured.

“I was supposed to go to a business meeting out at the Air Force base at the author’s club, and I remember there was watches and warnings and whatever all day long and it was about 5:30, or a quarter to six, I kind of went outside and everything looked find and I said ‘well, I guess I’ll go.’ And so I went out to the Air Force base and that’s when all hell broke loose,” George Ross, a Wichita Falls local said.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch across most of Texoma at 2:00 pm that day, and just after 6:00 pm is when the tornado made it’s way through the city.

Residents described it as a massive black cloud that left nothing but rubble in it’s path. The tornado took out powerlines, leaving everyone in the city without water and electricity.

“We had no cell phones, we had no internet, and the tornado took out all the long distance lines, and so we couldn’t call anybody for days. We had family in other states and people trying to reach us, and we were trying to reach them. This day and age you get on a cell phone or even on the internet, but back then we didn’t have that,” Ross said.

The warnings were not taken to heart by Wichita Falls locals, as they didn’t believe they would ever see a tornado of that magnitude.

“Interestingly enough, I think back then people around here didn’t really take tornado warnings very seriously, and they certainly didn’t take tornado watches very seriously,” said Ross. “It was just and old wives tale, that a tornado would never come below the Red River, and that turned out not to be true.”
Longtime residents here have told us that the tornado passed thru our neighborhood. Houses across the street from us were severely damaged. There has not been a significant tornado strike in Wichita Falls since.

An unusual thunderstorm cell that started north of us in Lawton OK has traveled south along I-44 and is about to hit us. Most storms here travel west to east.

I can hear the thunder now.

Rain just started.

Paid off the car loan on our Pacifica. Now we need to get a new title without the lien shown on it.

In Texas this is done at the county tax office.

The Wichita Falls county tax office is currently closed for 24 months (!) for renovations.

We will have to go to one of the 3 small satellite tax offices in the western side of the county.

Iowa Park is closest. Will try there on Monday.

Really don't understand why this can't be automatic in this day and age.

Quiet Sunday morning on the patio time.

Mrs.V is puttering in the back flower garden getting rid of the weeds before putting down the mulch a pallet load of which is sitting in the driveway.

Our lakes didn't stay above 65% for very long. :(

As per the Wichita Falls City Drought Ordinance, the current lake levels have triggered the Stage 1 Drought Watch.
Residents are requested to conserve water through mandatory and voluntary measures and comply with non-essential water usage restrictions.
Let's work together to conserve water and overcome the drought challenge.

Texas has started requiring local county appraisers to appraise taxable property at current market values.

The 2023 appraisals have just arrived. People who are multiplying last year's tax rate by this year's value are freaking out on social media about the huge tax increase.

This year's tax rate won't be announced until August. Too soon to panic. ;)

The house next door is for sale. Listed for $429,900! :o

:o The current owners have been there only about a year.

:o That house is smaller than our house and has no garage. Our market value appraisal just came in at $346,000.

Has our city suddenly become more popular?

There was an open house this afternoon at the neighboring house for sale. Mrs. V and our daughter went to look. They say that parts of it have been done up nicely but still think it is overpriced.

No garage, as I mentioned before, and no formal dining room. :o

Mrs. V and our daughter are now downtown looking at some furniture that our daughter found online at a local antique shop that she might want for her and our SIL's living area.

Hoping that Mrs. V can restrain herself. ;)

An inch of much needed rain last week has kept lake levels here at 65%. This morning a few T-storm cells are moving thru which will help slightly.

However the lakes are lower than usual as we move into the drier summer season. :?

Our younger SIL is visiting a dying :( 30 year friend in Houston this weekend so we are in North Dallas to help our younger daughter with the baby.

Baby is growing like a weed and can now track objects. At this rate he will be 6 feet tall by December. ;)

Quite a weekend.

Thursday was May the 4th Be With You. We drove to Dallas.

Then Cinco de Mayo. We took younger daughter and grandson to the Dallas Museum of Art and then had Thai takeout. DMA has free admission but parking was $20! :o

Today was Coronation Day. Mrs. V. had a recorder group rehearsal in the morning then we drove home.

Tomorrow is our older daughter's birthday. Do you remember exactly where you were 43 years ago on May 7th? I sure do. ;)

City of Wichita Falls
Great news, Wichita Falls! Our combined lake levels are almost a full percentage point from last week, currently at 65.9. Recent rains over the weekend have helped add to the watershed, and we're expecting more in the forecast.
While we're still under the Stage 1 Drought Watch, we're hopeful that with continued rain and conservation efforts, we can make progress. Keep up the good work, and conserve water as we head into the hot and dry summer months. Thank you for all your efforts in helping our community!
