Ashton B. Carter, a theoretical physicist who later climbed the leadership ranks at the Pentagon, culminating in two years as secretary of defense under President Barack Obama, a position he used to further open the military to women and transgender service members, died on Monday at his home in Boston. He was 68.
Jerry Lee Lewis, the piano-pounding, foot-stomping singer who electrified early rock ‘n’ roll with hits like “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” before marital scandal derailed his career, has died, according to a statement from his representative, Zach Farnum. He was 87.
Lewis passed away at his home in Desoto County, Mississippi, south of Memphis, the statement said. Farnum told CNN that Lewis died of “natural causes” when reached by phone.
Julie Powell, the food blogger best known for her cooking memoir, Julie & Julia, which inspired a film starring Meryl Streep, has died at the age of 49.
Her husband, Eric Powell, confirmed to the New York Times that she died of cardiac arrest caused by heart arrhythmia at their home in Olivebridge in upstate New York on 26 October.

Virginia McLaurin, who was born into a family of Black sharecroppers in the Jim Crow South and took a star turn as a centenarian when she danced with the Obamas at the White House, died on Monday.
Ms. McLaurin had been receiving hospice care and died peacefully in Maryland, where her son lives, according to a statement from her family and Deborah Menkart, a friend who helped arrange her White House meeting with the Obamas. She was 113 by her own accounting but did not have a birth certificate.
Hogan’s Heroes was my husband’s favorite television show. He used to watch it with his father who had been a POW in Germany during WWII.

Did you know that several of the cast had real connections to Germany and the war. Clary was Jewish in real life and was deported to a Nazi concentration camp, but survived by using his talent in singing and dancing in shows. Virtually all of the Nazi characters were played by German Jews who had either fled or survived the war.
Academy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and actress Irene Cara has passed away at home in Florida. She was 63.
Cara gained fame through her role as Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Fame, for which she also sang the title song. In 1983, she co-wrote and sang the song "Flashdance... What a Feeling" from the film Flashdance, which earned her an Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special.
