How'z about the Dems in the House pick the Republican that they most would be able to work with, and cut a deal with 4 or 5 sensible Republicans to set up a Congress that would actually get things done.

All it would take is half a dozen Republicans to go along with every Democrat. The speaker needs 218 votes, doesn't matter what party they come from.
Liz Cheney anyone?
She lost her primary and won't be in the house any longer.

Trump, very bravely went out on a limb and endorsed him Sunday. It helped his won/loss record.

As has been mentioned upthread, being in the house is not a requirement for Speaker -- Liz Cheney is actually someone for whom a few Republicans might be willing to vote. Certainly she should be a slam-dunk choice over Kevin McCarthy to any Democrat.

Even though the Constitution does not explicitly require the Speaker to be chosen from among the members of the House, I think it was assumed that the Speaker would be a member. The Articles of Confederation were explicit about this.

I have questions.

Would there be a salary paid to a Speaker who was not a member of the House? How would that be done? What rights would a non-member Speaker have? Does the House have any rules that exclude non-members from some activities that would be required of a Speaker? Does the Speaker have no duties of any kind whatever that require them to be a member of the House?

Good questions, much ado.

One other, not disqualifying, but interesting: A non-member would have no vote, correct?

Salons pretty trashy, but The headline says it all. Trump has lost the Murdoch one man one vote.

Has ‘Trumpty Dumpty’ taken a great fall from Rupert Murdoch’s grace?
Murdoch-owned media have not held back against the former president in the wake of Republicans’ disappointing midterms

On election day, Donald Trump was clear about how his efforts to support Republican candidates should be seen.

“Well, I think if they win, I should get all the credit,” Trump told NewsNation. “If they lose, I should not be blamed at all.”

Unfortunately for Trump, he did not get what he hoped for. Instead the former president has seen conservative news outlets, the Rupert Murdoch-owned ones in particular, turn on him, in some cases with gleeful abandon.

“Trumpty Dumpty” blared the front page of Thursday’s New York Post, the tabloid Murdoch has owned since 1976. Editors went so far as to mock up Trump as Humpty Dumpty, his enlarged orange head stuffed into a white shirt and a signature red tie.

Oh yeah, I wasn't thinking about that... she'd certainly be better than McCarthy!

If we can't get him fitted for an orange junpsuit, perhaps a white one would be appropriate.

Doesn't one have to be a member just to get on the House floor?

The House sets its own rules for such matters. They are not bound (except by the inertia of tradition) to rules of prior Congresses.

I think it is unlikely that they will reach outside their own body for Speaker. Not impossible, but unlikely.

EDIT to add: It’s not yet a foregone conclusion that they will have the choice. They have the edge right now, but that’s not the same as having a majority. As of this edit, they need 7 more called seats.
