I think because in this particular case, the lack of a preposition matters. 'edges near to win' would have been understandable in the proper context.
Yes, that would be better.
I think in general though since the advent of internet news careful editing has darn near vanished.

So here's the view from New York, where I voted.
Assuming the Dems lose the House by a seat or two. Or three. Or four. Look no further than the Empire State, where no less than FOUR seats flipped red--including the one you hear most about. Maloney.
I post a lot about Stefanik, my despicable congresswoman, but JHC, this is chilling for the future:

Apparently some Russians don't want Democrats to win. The mainstream media isn't covering this, but the cybersecurity media is:
A Russian hacktivist group calling itself “The People’s Cyberarmy” called on its members to target the American Democratic party website at https://democrats.org with DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks this morning, November 8th, 2022, which is Election Day in the United States. A post in their Telegram channel, “CyberArmyofRussia_Reborn”, which has more than 7,000 subscribers contained targeting instructions, and the channel contains links and instructions to downloadable DDOS tools.

North Carolina has 10,620,168 Earthlings. We are the 9th largest state in this great land of ours by population, ahead of Michigan, which itself is so big they had to break it into two pieces.
Well? They did!
Nevada only has 3,185,426, making them 32nd on the population chart, behind lowly Iowa, which is really just a lot of corn and soybeans with more corn and more soybeans, after all.
So it's time for little tiny Nevada to get its act together.

Saw recently that the Culinary Union has gone big in ballot curing and they probably will put Cortez-Masto over the top. The Culinary Worker's Union was the key to the famed Reid machine in NV and it's great to see that it is still rolling. I always regarded Las Vegas as sleazy but now that they may have saved the Senate, I may have to visit one day.
I'm sorry I can't find the link where I saw this. My brain is fried by skittering all over the Internet like a crazed squirrel.

My best friend from Hs moved to Vegas when her naval Cdr dad retired. She graduated from UNLV with a journalism degree and a Sinology minor. She covered the lege for about 10 years. She said the most surprising thing was how relatively normal it was - except for the mobsters in high places.

CNN (and some other outlets, not all) has called WA-03 for Marie Gluesenkamp Perez. This is a R -> D flip, and leaves open a narrow window for Dems to actually hold the House.
(Speaker Pelosi was confident in holding the House some weeks back; few took her seriously. That might be a fatal error - she’s been around the block and knows a thing or twenty about politics.)
