I literally gasped when he turned and gave his "condolences." Followed by the "there will be more information" cliffhanger, which is just cruel (and very unlikely).

Her failure to acknowledge the Floyd family was pretty cold.

One thing I learned today from Nelson: Chauvin is a father. That's scary.

I also note that Eric Nelson spoke a great deal of how the country was divided 50/50 on this case and how he's gotten communications from "both sides." He used that phrase twice. I don't know where he gets his polling from either.

22.5 years - 10 years above guideline.

I love how his lawyer tried to follow as he was escorted out and got the door slammed in his face.

Of all the TV commentators who are lawyers, Joey Jackson is my favorite. There is a touch of bitterness in his tone.

I wonder if the judge decided not to go with 30 years to strengthen the case on an appeal.

I suspect that the 22-page memorandum will show that he applied mitigating factors (which just so happens to weaken any appeal).

Not saying I agree with said mitigating factors, mind you.

The judge could have enhanced the sentence to 30 years based on any one of the aggravating factors. There were four here. He did enhance by 10 years to 22.5 but not to 30. Was that to make it less likely for the case to be overturned and the sentence reduced on appeal?

Not if what he said that the hearing is true - that he had to sentence the defendant for his crime taking into consideration the aggravating and mitigating factors, he wasn’t trying to send a message, etc. Of course, all of that makes it less likely to be overturned on appeal, but I really doubt the judge sat there and thought to himself, “how long a sentence can I award that will make Chauvin suffer and still be bulletproof?”

Parenthetically, the Chauvins of the world must be sick unto death of people bringing disgrace to their family name.

Same. And how condescending (and delusional) is it to frame his condolences as information that would come out that would bring them peace. Dude. There are only 52 cards in the deck and they're all on the table. There is no getting around you killed George Floyd. Short of "Aliens came to Earth, inhabited my body, and they did it, not me," there is nothing you can say. And even that brings no relief to the Floyd family. Arrogant fool. So abusive.

I'm confident that the judge's 22-page memo supports the 22.5 year sentence. He had a tough jog, under a microscope, and from his statements in court, he took into account what the law requires him to take into account (sentencing statutes, aggravating and mitigating factors) and didn't take into account things he shouldn't have (public opinion, etc.)

Love you all at The Fogbow, didn't have time to hear what happen so tuned in here first for the play by play.

Just catching up now, a family member on CNN is mad the sentence wasn't longer and reminds folks to vote. And another reminder that the federal charges are still pending so Derek could get more.

They are chanting: "Maximum Accountability for George Floyd"

Was a life sentence even a sentencing option for the judge?
