So I’m sitting here in the ICU and suddenly the fire alarm goes off. I think, two drills in one week?
Narrator: No.
Narrator: No.
May the bridges I burn light my way.

Are you saying it's not a drill? Was someone being an ass or did something happen? I hope you're ok!Slim Cognito wrote: ↑Sun Oct 15, 2023 2:35 pm So I’m sitting here in the ICU and suddenly the fire alarm goes off. I think, two drills in one week?

I am so very sorrySlim Cognito wrote: ↑Sun Oct 15, 2023 8:12 am The ICU nurse called early this morning so I rushed in. His breathing has deteriorated to the use of bipap. He is DNI. Everything is slowing down. Not looking good. I’ve called his kids but they were just here last week.
But he seems comfortable. He’s not responsive other than opening his eyes when I speak to him but I’m not seeing recognition.

He's gone.
He'd been in agony since last night, everything starting to shut down and because his blood pressure was so low, they couldn't give him morphine, so they gave him fentanyl which wasn't enough to stop the pain. At rounds this morning, we had the hospice talk and I agreed. They all said it was best to make him comfortable and once that was agreed on, they could start giving him Dilaudid which immediately eased his pain and he went to sleep. Early evening his blood pressure started to crater, despite them giving him the maximum pharmaceutical support. He had so many IVs in him, that the only way to give him more medicine was to do a central line in the jugular, which in itself, could have killed him because his platelets were so low due to the leukemia. It's possible, even plausible, they wouldn't be able to stop the bleeding from the central line.
Before hospice could even begin, we made the decision for AND, Allow Natural Death. They then were able to give him morphine and remove the Bi-Pap mask. He lasted maybe ten minutes and went peacefully as I held his hand.
I'm home and the fur babies are whining. It's funny how they know these things.

I'm so sorry. No one knows what anyone goes through with this, but I can guess.

thank you for the update, sad, but not unexpected: happy he could pass peaceably which is something we all want. Take some deep breaths and try to get some rest. Let all of us here know how you are doing when you can.
