Melendres v. Arpaio is a large part of why Penzone resigned.
https://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/news/jo ... y-17988095Dirty Dozen: Meet 12 of the worst politicians in Arizona history
From Joe Arpaio to Russell Pearce, Kari Lake and Paul Gosar, the state boasts a rich history of disreputable and dastardly people.

Joe Arpaio
At age 91, former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is the Norma Desmond of Arizona politics, reliving the glory days of six terms in office by selling autographed pink underwear — the kind he made his prisoners wear in the jails — at local gun shows, craft fairs or anywhere they’ll let him set up a booth. On the nonagenarian’s Facebook page, he posts old photos of himself with celebrities of yore, such as Lou Ferrigno and Dennis Miller.
In 2022, he ran for mayor of the city he lives in, Fountain Hills. He told Phoenix New Times he wanted to “fire” Sheriff Paul Penzone, the dude who beat him like a rug in 2016, by canceling the Maricopa County Sheriff Office's contract to provide law enforcement services to the town. Arpaio lost the election, but he’s running again in 2024. Penzone recently resigned as sheriff, leaving Arpaio loyalist, Chief Deputy Russ Skinner, in command for now. Seems Arpaio’s outlived his chance at revenge.
Not that Arpaio lacks a legacy. Currently, it’s best represented by the more than $250 million Maricopa County has shelled out because of Melendres v. Arpaio, the lawsuit brought on by Arpaio’s racial profiling sweeps of Hispanic neighborhoods. Arpaio’s past tense politically, but Melendres drags on, in no small part due to the institutional intransigence of the “House that Joe Built.”
Arpaio was once one of the most feared men in Arizona, retaliating against his political enemies, arresting the former owners of New Times and investigating mayors, judges, county supervisors and more. His jails were renowned for their cruelty, incurring millions of dollars in lawsuit payouts for deaths and maimings. Now all that’s left are pink boxers, bad memories and an ever-increasing bill.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio @RealSheriffJoe wrote: My Surprising Connection to RFK Jr.:
When I was the head of the U.S. Bureau of Narcotics (now known as the DEA) for the Washington D.C. field office, I was personally asked by the Kennedy family to assist meeting their vehicle at Arlington National Cemetery and walking the family to Robert F. Kennedy’s final resting place on June 8, 1968, the only late-night burial in Arlington National Cemetery’s history. In my 1968 personal diary, I wrote: “2PM- 12MID TO Arlington Cemetery assisted in BURIEL” and “12MID- 2AM at Arlington Cemetery and with CARMINE BELINO.”
In a strange coincidence, on May 11, 1968 (3 weeks earlier from when then-Senator Robert Kennedy was shot and killed on June 6, 1968), two drug suspects took me, while I was on duty, to a rural area of Virginia and attempted to rob me. A long violent gun battle ensued between me and the suspects in a vehicle resulting in a written commendation given to me from the then-U.S. Attorney General, Ramsey Clark, dated May 15, 1968.
It was an honor assisting the Kennedy family including Robert Kennedy Jr., who is now a candidate for president. I remember when his father, who was a revered attorney general, was asked by Italian organizations to cease using the word ‘Mafia’ to avoid ethnic stereotyping. He listened and ordered that the word “Mafia” not be used, and substituted “organized crime.”
Unfortunately, in the current climate, some media, political figures, and prosecutors still use the word ‘Mafia’ or RICO (Racketeering Influenced Corrupt Organizations), which is synonymous with the word ‘Mafia.’ RICO is now wrongly being used to prosecute President Donald Trump.
Final note: I endorse Donald Trump for president, not Robert Kennedy Jr. I have been with President Trump from day one even when I served as Sheriff of Maricopa County, AZ (for 24 years), and have mentioned many times he is my one and only hero in my lifetime.

That just shows how little the blue check mark means after Elmo's shenanigans. Given all the scammers and fake news purveyors who have gotten the mark, I wonder why any honest person would waste their money by paying the fee for it. Its value has become so diluted that it no longer means that the person has been vetted and found to really be who they say they are. The check mark no longer gives readers even a scintilla of evidence regarding the veracity of the poster. It is entirely worthless.

To go a step further: A blue check mark almost certainly means you are paying to tweet.
This change made me switch from not blocking to habitually blocking most blue check marks.

True, but I think it requires a certain amount of mental flexibility to change the years of conditioning which says "Blue check mark = trusted". We have that flexibility. Some people don't. As time progressed, I learned that Donald Trump has heart and compassion. When he learned my wife, Ava, had cancer, he personally called her on several occasions to check on her health. I also received my pardon from Trump on Ava’s birthday. After her death, he showed his kindness by constantly mentioning and honoring Ava.
This sham verdict will never change my mind about President Trump and he continues to be my one and only hero in my life!

Arpaio's Legacy
Phoenix New Times (Lemons): Once again, GOP sheriff hopeful Jerry Sheridan can’t handle the truth:
The former Joe Arpaio acolyte was once caught being dishonest in court. Now after Arpaio's old job, Sheridan warped the facts again.
Jerry Sheridan continues his never-ending wrestling match with veracity.
The onetime second-in-command to notorious former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is now running for Arpaio’s old job. But in a recent attempt to distance himself from the misdeeds of his former boss, Sheridan wound up rewriting a damning chapter of his own professional history.
The setting was a May 23 debate on PBS between the three Republicans running for Maricopa County sheriff. The subject: the racial profiling lawsuit Melendres vs. Arpaio, which by June 30 will have cost county taxpayers more than a quarter of a billion dollars.
The fib? That Sheridan, who served as Arpaio's chief deputy from 2011 to 2016, had no knowledge of or involvement in the agency's defiance of a court order to stop its enforcement of immigration law during sweeps of Latino neighborhoods. U.S. District Court Judge G. Murray Snow, who issued that order, eventually ruled the sweeps were unconstitutional.
* * *
During the debate, the pertinent exchange began when moderator Ted Simons referred to a videotaped statement by Sheridan from 2013.
Earlier that year, Snow found the sheriff’s office guilty of widespread racial profiling, later appointing a monitor and mandating a laundry list of reforms that the agency is still struggling to implement. In the video mentioned at the debate, Sheridan called Snow’s ruling “crap.”
Sheridan clarified at the debate that he actually called the order "ludicrous and crap,” though he now says the sanctions levied by the court were only “over the top.” But then he launched into a rosy depiction of his role in the Melendres suit.
* * *
Sheridan was Arpaio's second in command by then, though he later claimed in a hearing before Snow that he did not know about the 2011 preliminary injunction until nearly three years later. Snow found those assertions erroneous, lambasting both Sheridan and Arpaio in a 2016 ruling for making "multiple intentional misstatements of fact while under oath" and engaging in "multiple acts of misconduct, dishonesty and bad faith."
In that ruling, Snow found Sheridan guilty of two counts of civil contempt. Snow later ordered an independent internal affairs investigation into what the judge called Sheridan's "knowing misstatements" regarding the 2011 preliminary injunction. That probe ended with Sheridan's name being placed on the county attorney's Brady List, which is named after a 1963 U.S. Supreme Court decision that ruled that the government must disclose any potentially exculpatory material to a defendant. This includes any information that undercuts the credibility of a government witness, such as a police officer caught lying.
