This is the crossover I'm looking for! :towel:

No: The Brunsons didn't sue Vance. Because Vance wasn't a senator in 2021. :brickwallsmall:

from the UK
Trump’s running mate said UK could be ‘first Islamist country’ with nuclear weapons
JD Vance’s criticism of Labour came after David Lammy tried to build bridges with vice-presidential nominee

Jessica Elgot Deputy political editor
Tue 16 Jul 2024 09.55 CEST

Senior Labour figures have rejected comments by Donald Trump’s vice-presidential pick, JD Vance, that the UK could become the first “truly Islamist country that will get a nuclear weapon” under the party.

They were reacting to comments that were made by Vance, a junior senator for the state of Ohio who was unveiled as Trump’s running mate, at a conference for US Conservatives.

Angela Rayner, the deputy prime minister, told ITV that Vance had said “quite a lot of fruity things in the past” and she “looked forward” to meeting him and Trump if they won the US election in November.

titled an Analysis
In JD Vance, Trump has picked a mini-me offering red meat to his Maga base
The Republican nominee could have picked a woman or person of colour but opted for what looks like an unapologetic play for even more white male support

David Smith in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
ue 16 Jul 2024 00.38 CEST

He could have chosen a woman, a person of colour or a political moderate. Instead Donald Trump went for a mini-me.

The former US president announced on Monday that his running mate in the presidential election is JD Vance, a senator for Ohio and friend of his son, Donald Trump Jr. The sports arena hosting the Republican national convention erupted as Vance entered, grinning broadly and shaking countless hands as Merle Haggard’s America First played twice.

The 39-year-old arrives with the zeal of the convert. In 2016 he eviscerated Trump as “cultural heroin” and a demagogue “leading the white working class to a very dark place”. For good measure he called himself “a never-Trump guy” and wrote: “Trump makes people I care about afraid. Immigrants, Muslims, etc. Because of this I find him reprehensible.”

But the senator’s journey since then is the journey of much of the Republican party. He is all-in for the Make America great again (Maga) brand of populist-nationalism, echoing Trump on abortion, climate, election denialism, immigration and America first isolationism – a terrible blow to Ukraine. His willingness to abandon principle suggests he would not stand up to Trump in defence of democracy as Vice-President Mike Pence did in 2021.

Pakistan has nuclear weapons. Disturbing that a candidate for VP apparently doesn't know this.

From Simon Rosenberg;
NBC News has a story this morning (https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald ... rcna161982) which can only be read as the Trump campaign staff already trashing the Vance choice and blaming it on Trump’s sons:
MILWAUKEE — With the clock ticking to the Republican National Convention last week, Donald Trump met privately to discuss his running mate search with two of his closest advisers: his sons.

The conversation quickly turned tense when the former president indicated that he was leaning toward Doug Burgum, until recently the largely unknown governor of North Dakota — but someone whose low-maintenance, no-drama personality would never threaten to outshine Trump.

That’s when Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump chimed in.

“Don Jr. and Eric went bats--- crazy: ‘Why would you do something so stupid? He offers us nothing,’” a longtime Republican operative familiar with the discussion told NBC News.

“They were basically all like ‘JD, JD, JD,’” the operative said.

Trump ratified his sons’ recommendation here Monday, selecting Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his vice presidential candidate. Trump called Vance with the news 20 minutes before announcing it on social media, a source familiar with the call said.

In choosing Vance, Trump made a different calculation than he did in 2016 and leaned fully into his MAGA base. Back then, he looked to his daughter and her husband — the more establishment-friendly Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner — for strategic advice. This time, his red meat-throwing sons have a more central role. And instead of going with a longtime traditional Republican like Mike Pence, Trump chose the MAGA warrior Vance.
The pick of “MAGA warrior Vance” is a confirmation of the ugliness and threat of MAGA. In my view this was a serious political mistake and missed opportunity for Trump, and makes it more likely we can win this election. Work hard this week to educate your networks on what Vance means for the GOP ticket and all of us. Back to work all……
Trump is already blaming his sons for the pick in case it turns sour, letting it be known that it was their choice. To me this shows, once again, his extreme deep down lack of self confidence.

I have the feeling that Vance could be similar to Sarah Palin. Devout Republicans loved Palin and her sassy attitude, but, outside of Republican party, she was derided. Vance is a MAGA darling, but there's a lot to him which turns off non-MAGAs.

Former president Donald Trump has chosen Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate in the 2024 election. On the first day of the Republican National Convention, Vance, 39, strode onto the floor alongside his wife, Usha Vance, whom he met at Yale Law School.

Vance has publicly praised his wife in interviews, calling her “brilliant” and “way more accomplished than I am.”

538 (ABC): By picking J.D. Vance for VP, Trump doubles down on Trumpism:
The youngest VP nominee in decades could continue Trump's legacy for years.

On Monday, former President Donald Trump announced Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio will be his running mate in the 2024 presidential election. Vance’s selection presents the American people with a far younger face in a race that has been defined in part by the advanced age of President Joe Biden (81 years old) and Trump (78), and is also symbolic of the GOP’s transition to a more Trumpian form of conservatism.

* * *

Trump’s selection of Vance features some interesting historical wrinkles. For one thing, Vance will be 40 years old by Election Day, making him the youngest vice presidential pick since Richard Nixon (39) in 1952. This also makes Vance the first millennial to take a spot on a national party ticket.

* * *

Overall, Trump’s selection serves to mostly double down on his populist-conservative brand. The choice of Vance could reflect Trump’s confidence about his position in the race, as he leads in 538’s national polling average by a little over 2 percentage points and holds at least a slight edge in every swing state. As a result, he may not have felt the need to “balance” his ticket with someone from a different wing of the GOP, even though most Republicans are now in his corner. This is a change from 2016, when Trump picked then-Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate. Pence was a more traditional conservative whose presence on the ticket reassured the more religious and conservative parts of the party base that were at the time skeptical of Trump, a political outsider.

Vance also gives Trump someone who’d likely be a loyal second-in-command if the Trump-Vance ticket wins. Under pressure from Trump, Pence famously refused to interfere in the certification of Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, a move that made Pence persona non grata to many Republicans. By contrast, Vance has said that if he’d been vice president, he would not have certified the results and would have asked some states that voted for Biden to send Trump slates of electors, despite the fact that no evidence of widespread fraud in that election has ever come to light. Vance is also a practiced media hand, so while Trump may be the last presidential nominee to need a running mate who can act as a traditional “attack dog,” the Ohio senator can fill the role.

* * *

That said, the Vance selection could still reverberate for many years to come. Trump constitutionally can only serve one more term as president, meaning he couldn’t run again in 2028. In modern times, the vice presidency has often served as a stepping stone to winning a party’s future presidential nomination. Vice presidents Biden, Al Gore, George H.W. Bush, Walter Mondale, Hubert Humphrey and Nixon all later became their party’s standard bearer. Even if the Trump-Vance ticket loses, Vance could use the 2024 campaign as a chance to build national notoriety that he could continue to augment in the Senate before running for president in the future (whether in 2028 or later). And in Ohio state politics, a Vance vice presidency would open up a Senate seat that Republican Gov. Mike DeWine would fill with an appointee ahead of a 2026 special election for the remainder of Vance’s term.

Vance is now poised to become a successor to Trump in the not-too-distant future and, accordingly, a leading voice on the right. Although his position will undoubtedly be contested by many other high-profile Republicans, his selection also signals that the GOP — at least for now — is set to continue moving in the direction that Trump has set.
As others have noted, selecting Vance may be the ultimate step in killing off the Republican Party of yore.

The prospect of which may actually turn off some mainline conservatives.

Yes.

The Atlantic (in 2011): Did Sarah Palin's Target Map Play Role in Giffords Shooting?:
Was it yelling fire in a crowded theater?

In March of 2010, Sarah Palin released a map of 20 Congressional districts she and John McCain had won in 2008 but whose Congressmen had voted in favor of the recently passed health care reform bill. The map, released amid a wave of small-scale violence against Democratic lawmakers, marked each targeted district with a set of crosshairs. Palin, who had promoted the map by tweeting "Don't Retreat, Instead - RELOAD," drew controversy with the map, which some critics saw as a winking approval of violence.

On Saturday, Arizona Democrat Gabrielle Giffords, one of the 20 targeted Congressmen, was shot in the head by 22-year-old Jared Loughner, whose attack wounded 13 others and killed six.
