John Herschel – a Pioneer in Celestial Photography
Herschel was also a highly accomplished chemist. His discovery in 1819 of the solvent power of hyposulfite of soda on the otherwise insoluble salts of silver was the prelude to its use as a fixing agent in photography. On 22 January 1839 Herschel heard of Daguerre’s work on photography from a casual remark in a letter.[10] Without knowing any details, he was able to take photographs himself within a few days. In the same year, independently of Fox Talbot [6], he invented the process of photography on sensitized paper. He was the first person to apply the now well-known terms “positive” and “negative” to photographic images, and to imprint them upon glass prepared by the deposit of a sensitive film [5].
“Science is the knowledge of many, orderly and methodically digested and arranged, so as to become attainable by one.”
– Sir John Herschel, A Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy (1831)

I bought a camera backpack. We're traveling to Seattle in August, anyway that's the plan.
So I know the photo is baby blue interior, but it said the color was green, and I had $25 in Amazon points, so send me one.
See how it says "Color = Green"?
So they sent me the baby blue one in the photo. I can't stand baby blue. What do they think I am, a UCLA Bruin?
Ol' Wifehorn is a UCLA Bruin.
Mebbee a UNC Tarheel?

Yeah, except that there is no agreement here as to where "tar heels" comes from.
Actually, it came from the practice of making tar for wooden ship repairs. You burned a big pile of pine trees (we got a lot of pine trees) and the tar runs out of the bottom of the fire, where it can get on your boot heels if'n you're not careful.
But really, it came from the behavior in battle of the troops from North Carolina during the Civil War, especially the Battle of Gettysburg (Gregg, please pick up the white courtesy telephone), because they showed a great deal of courage by "digging their heels in" (which is American slang) to the point where they maybe put tar on their heels to prevent them from running from the enemy Union soldiers.
And I think there's a third explanation that isn't coming to mind at the moment.
Also too, one of the two dates on our state flag commemorates an event that likely never took place.

On a night walk that I did in September, in Guapiles, Costa Rica, we came across this jewel of the rainforest: a crowned tree frog. It seemed as if it was made of chocolate—and if you look closer, it has a beautiful crown. The symmetry on its head is just perfect.

Lennon, Nilsson, Alice Cooper and Mickey Dolenz? That would have been hard to keep up with, no? Don’t recognized the woman.
