Created the Dilbert cartoon; learned only wrong things from the experience.

He writes a popular cartoon strip called Dilbert that satirizes office life.

Oh, him!

Yeah we had Dilbert strips in publications over here. Liked his sense of humour back then.

Is he now competing with Rudy Giuliani for biggest fall from grace?

The short answer : as a kid he built his entire self image on being a special, blessed person who figured out how to hack reality with his own brand of new age magic, and thus all of his failures had to be because of affirmative action or jews or lgbt or feminists or whatever.

Though apparently he was unable to speak for a couple of years, which tanked his relationships, and he went extra nuts after that.
Thanks for the video links, but yeah, short version is preferred.

Some bizarre actual neurological disorder which he managed to recover from.

He's one of those guys that was a regular guy until he got lucky with the right cartoon for the times in the 1990s and quickly went from software engineer to a guy working at home making $10 million a year. And like many other folks like that, he thought that gave him permission to start telling other people how to live their lives.

He fell down the rabbit hole and spectacularly blew his life up earlier this year when he said some remarkably racist stuff on his podcast, (IIRC) particularly about how black people are all criminals. This from a guy who lives in a heavily guarded private community in Northern California, and he doesn't have to leave his little bubble to get anything he wants. He had ranted about various forms of "political correctness" for a long time, but this was remarkably vile even in today's world.

The reaction was swift: most of the newspapers that ran the strip dropped him immediately, his book deals were cancelled and the company that syndicates his work (i.e., sells it to newspapers) dropped him as well. So his income basically went from millions of dollars per year to zero in less than a month. And he was completely unwilling to admit that he may have made a mistake.

Apparently, he made some comments afterwards that he was trying to gin up controversy for fun on his podcast but had no idea that the consequences would be so significant.

Specifically, he claimed that Black people were a "hate group", and '"the best advice I would give to white people is to get the hell away from black people; just get the fuck away."

I have trouble blaming either of the first two in this case. He has never come across as mentally ill and, outside his attempt to market a dilbert themed food product that ended up being really terrible, no mention of substances. But he did seem to be a product of his upbringing. He grew up in an apocalyptic branch of christianity and all his spiritualism after that seemed to be trying to find things to fit into that same 'we must know and control the future', an through will the chosen can command the universe'.

Long term, it was probably less that he hung out with the wrong people, and more he was the wrong person.

I did like his comic about the office paper dispenser (aka copier). Insert a single blank sheet, type in the number of sheets you want, and quila! Wish granted!

But they for sure want to go back to just the Constitution as originally written, without all those pesky Amendments after the 2nd, or for sure before the 13th..

He does a comic named "Dilbert" that was funny back in the '90's. However, he started believing his own hype, went right wing during the President Obama administration, and went full metal racist this year, resulting in the unfunny dregs of "Dilbert" being dropped from his comic syndicate and newspapers. Basically, he's been going insane for the last 20 years

Scott Adams identifies with Dilbert, but in reality Wally is his id, the pointy-haired boss is his ego, and Dogbert is his super-ego.

Nicely put. Dilbert was never an asshole, and I think those others tended only to be
incidental assholes when their personality traits and quirks kicked in, perhaps like Seinfeld characters. Whereas Scott Adams now is more like those occasional characters whose purpose is to be pure assholes (wasn't there a Director of IT Prevention, or something like that).

Mordac, the Preventer of Information Services.

I referenced him just the other day in a conversation with some senior staff at my Embassy. Two of them got the reference and I felt vindicated.
But the sunshine aye shall light the sky,
As round and round we run;
And the truth shall ever come uppermost,
And justice shall be done.

Odd that "… for being racist" bit in the cartoon. It could have been omitted leaving "I was canceled for something I said on YouTube" or, to flesh it out slightly and non-specifically, "I was canceled for something inappropriate I said on YouTube".

I wonder why Adams decided to make Dilbert identify it as specifically racist?

Perhaps Adams was well on his chosen path to being an asshole then?

That wasn't drawn or texted by Adams. You can see a different name on the top left corner.

Doh!

Thanks for the clarification. I hadn't noticed (I see it now), and the wording did seem very odd for Adams.

An interesting read.

Undercover With the New Alt-Right
For 11 months, I pretended to be a far-right extremist. I discovered a radical youth movement trying to infiltrate the Republican Party.

To be fair, I don't think many people would have noticed either. I didn't notice myself. But I looked closely as I thought that was out of character for Dogbert and I wanted to make sure it was really written by Addams. And I've seen a fair amount of fake Calvin and Hobbes strips out there.

I've often seen parodies, but they have employed the parodist's own style but mimicking the tropes of the original for effect. Or they use original artwork but rewrite the bubbles but use a clearly distinguishable font. This is more like "passing off", except for the artist's attribution, too easily missed.

It is a complicated world we live.

Found via Wikipedia:

What Was the Alt-Right? America’s most notorious modern extremist movement collapsed after Charlottesville. But did it succeed in making its ideas mainstream?
After the revelations about his pseudonymous racist work became public, Hanania published multiple articles asserting that he had abandoned his earlier views and evolved over the past decade from alt-right internet troll into a classical liberal. But while most of the commentary about Hanania in the wake of the revelations has positioned him as right wing, his public statements over the past two years have been generally supportive of President Biden and highly critical of the right. In that respect, his evolution has mirrored the strange career of [Richard] Spencer who, in the wake of Charlottesville, has attempted to distance himself from his leadership of the alt-right, rebranding himself with public statements attacking Trump, and voicing support for NATO and the Biden White House.
