The Secret Service knew about Jan 6 threat. They dismissed it.

By Jordan Libowitz and Sara Wiatrak
August 17, 2022

In the days before the January 6 attack on the Capitol, documents exchanged between the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies outlined “threats of violence” on the 6th, coming “predominantly from right wing groups” with “plans to bring weapons into the District,” according to documents obtained by CREW. The Secret Service knew that Trump’s supporters would be demonstrating around Freedom Plaza and the Capitol with the intent to cause violence, but the agency does not appear to have taken the threat seriously.

While the Secret Service downplayed threats posed by right-wing extremist groups and Trump’s supporters leading up to January 6, the newly obtained documents reveal just how grave and explicit the threats had actually been.

The National Capital Region Threat Intelligence Consortium (NTIC) disseminated these threats in messages and a conference call on the morning of January 4, providing a clear and prescient warning of the violence to come. NTIC alerted the Secret Service, FBI, Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department among other law enforcement groups of “on-line communications citing violence in DC on 1-6-21,” which included objectives such as “Occupying the Capitol to influence lawmakers to change election results,” “Call to come with guns,” “Be prepared to battle” and “Exercise 2nd Amendment rights.”

Groups identified as coming with a potential to cause violence included the Oath Keepers, the 3%ers and neo-Nazi groups Atomwaffen and Storm Front. In spite of this warning, the Secret Service noted “There is no indication of civil disobedience” stemming from the right-wing extremist groups involved in the riot. Upon learning of the Proud Boys’ intent to arrive in DC on January 6, the Secret Service released an internal memo that disclosed no indication of concern—despite the Proud Boys stating they will turn out in “record numbers.”

NTIC’s warning was not the only one the Secret Service failed to heed. The U.S. Marshals Service’s Office of Protective Intelligence flagged a Parler post for a reference of violence against the vice president, and followed it up with a report titled “Concerning issues” that included further screenshots of recent Parler posts calling for the violent removal of politicians, implying plans to have firearms at the Capitol and threatening Mike Pence.

Even without any intelligence (no jokes), I knew something was going to happen. I assumed it was well known and would be dealt with. I was wrong.

In new filing today, the DOJ says Group 2 of the nine-defendant tunnel assault case might also wind up being a bench trial. Group 1 just waived their jury rights earlier this week.

They also reaffirm that at least one defendant is still in active plea discussions.

Very touristy

DOJ seeking 46 months incarceration for 72-year-old Jan. 6 defendant Howard Richardson, who lied about the circumstances of his assault on a police officer even after he was presented with video of the incident.

I don't give a carp about his age. He was young and healthy enough to participate. Lock him up.

Okay, I don't know the judge in this, but I would guess it's one of the ones you've been talking about as being lenient. Hypothetically, now that they've chosen a bench trial, what happens if the Judge assumes room temperature or becomes otherwise unavailable? Are they still stuck with a bench trial even though the new Judge is Harvey "Hang 'em all and let Dog sort 'em out" Johnson?

After typing that I'm almost sure they'd get a mistrial, but are they still stuck with a bench trial the second time?

No links, but the more-or-less local woman who stole Pelosi's laptop asked for release from house arrest to attend the Pennsylvania Renaissance Festival weekends in August and September. The judge granted permission.

Riley June Williams.

I want their names out there.

Oh, look at this from June 11.

https://www.pennlive.com/news/2022/06/w ... cutor.html
Prosecutors filed a motion Friday asking a judge not to loosen restrictions on suspected Capitol rioter Riley Williams because they say she recently met with a man who wanted to shoot up a synagogue and lied about it.

Williams, 23, who is accused of directing rioters inside the Capitol and stealing Nancy Pelosi’s laptop, told probation officers she was getting a visit from her cousin in August. But the visit actually was from a man who had been convicted of stealing his roommate’s truck, and attempting to buy a gun with plans for a mass shooting at a synagogue, according to the motion.

Prosecutors say Williams also got her mother to lie to her probation officer about the visit by the man in August 2021 to her mother’s home, where she is residing, according to the motion. Williams’ mother was assigned by the court to be her third-party monitor to ensure she complies with the conditions of her pre-trial release.

The man was convicted, kicked out of the Marine Corps, and sentenced to 19 months in prison. He told Williams about his prior arrest, according to court documents. The records contained a foot note that the government believes the man at some point became her fiancé.

Thanks. I knew her last name was Williams, but didn't look up more.

I have to remind myself pre-trial detention is based on danger to the community/flight risk, not necessarily ugly but non-criminal behavior. Although consistently lying in response to court orders isn't a good look.

I have friends-of-friends who are regulars there, and one of the intermediary friends who used to set up merchant's booths at the faire when she lived in the area has already sent them warnings about the insurrectionist's attendance, just in case there's any performative violence or anti-antifa nonsense going on.

It looks to me like many people at the rally went up the street next to it towards the WH, but just short of getting to the WH turned onto that long diagonal street that leads to the Capitol. The others at the rally look like they also started heading up in the direction of the WH but turned onto the long horizontal street over to the Capitol.

It does look like there are more people taking that diagonal road than there were just people taking that route from the rally, but I can't see where anyone joining the group would have been coming from.
