Do you think they’ll spend a lot of time at CPAC complaining that Twitter stifled free speech by banning conspiracies and revenge porn before the elections?

Will all the local irony meters explode?

Matt Schlapp Hires Johnny Depp’s Lawyer to Unmask Sexual Assault Accuser

Roger Sollenberger
Sat, February 11, 2023 at 4:03 AM GMT+1

According to court documents filed on Thursday, the legal team of conservative icon Matt Schlapp has formally denied that he committed sexual battery against a former Herschel Walker campaign staffer who has accused the CPAC chair of groping his crotch against his will—and he’s asking the court to name the accuser.

Media reports have omitted the accuser’s name at his request, citing concerns for personal and professional retaliation. But Schlapp’s legal team is requesting that the accuser be unmasked, while also pinning the accuser’s injuries on the accuser himself.

“The Schlapps deny that Mr. Schlapp committed sexual battery,” the defense wrote in its response, asking the court to dismiss the case with prejudice. The filings, which come in response to the lawsuit the accuser submitted two weeks ago, also deny the defamation and conspiracy counts, and seek to reclaim legal costs.

While the defense goes to great lengths to argue that the accuser has “publicly smeared” the Schlapps, they make no defamation counterclaims of their own. At one point, without providing evidence, they allege that the accuser’s lawsuit, simply by including the Schlapps’ home address, led directly to threats against their family, even though their mansion has been featured in multiple media reports.

Still, the Schlapps did not file a countersuit.

GOP operative comes forward as accuser in sexual misconduct claim against CPAC head

By Beth Reinhard and Isaac Arnsdorf
Updated March 8, 2023 at 5:43 p.m. EST|Published March 8, 2023 at 1:21 p.m. EST

The man who has accused Matt Schlapp, the influential leader of the Conservative Political Action Conference, of sexual misconduct came forward publicly Wednesday after a judge said he must use his real name to proceed with a lawsuit.

Carlton Huffman, 39, a longtime aide to Republican campaigns who lives in Raleigh, N.C., said he plans to amend the previously anonymous lawsuit, which seeks $9.4 million in damages for alleged sexual battery and defamation.

“I’m not backing away,” Huffman said in an interview with The Washington Post. “I’m not going to drop this. Matt Schlapp did what he did and he needs to be held accountable.”

Schlapp, 55, has denied Huffman’s claims that he groped his crotch and invited him to his hotel room during an October trip to Atlanta to campaign for Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker. Schlapp’s lawyer argued Wednesday that by proceeding anonymously, Huffman was trying to avoid scrutiny of his own record — including expressing extremist views on a white-supremacist blog and radio show more than a decade ago.

“I strongly believe we cannot defend this case — and it’s a multimillion-dollar case — without being able to use his name,” said Benjamin Chew, Schlapp’s lawyer.

Alexandria Circuit Court Chief Judge Lisa Bondareff Kemler described “balancing” the request for anonymity with the public’s interest in knowing the accuser’s identity and the ability of Schlapp and his wife, Mercedes, to defend themselves. Mercedes Schlapp is also accused of defamation in the suit.

Kemler noted an absence of specific threats against Schlapp’s accuser.

“The plaintiff has not established I think the heavy burden of establishing both a concrete need for secrecy and identifying the consequences that would likely befall him if forced to proceed in his own name,” she said. The judge said she would issue an order requiring Huffman to add his name to the suit.

By putting his name on the record, Huffman will test anew Schlapp’s support with the board of CPAC’s parent organization, the American Conservative Union, and with other Republican allies at a time when he faces a wide range of challenges, including heavy staff turnover and reduced turnout at CPAC’s flagship conference in the Washington area last week. The Republican power broker and leading booster of former president Donald Trump has declined to respond to questions from The Post about those issues and Huffman’s allegations.

Carlton Huffman, a rabid partisan, called himself "The Unreconstructed Southerner” and has a racist, bigoted and White Supremacist background. Matty likes bad boys. Deets:

Now that his name has been released, this story from January about Carlton Huffman and North Carolina (Foggy, you sure have a lot of action there) is getting attention:
NC legislative staffer's short tenure ends after appearances on 'pro-white' show resurface
An anonymous email to statehouse reporters, sent late Wednesday, detailed Carlton Huffman's online footprint. Huffman says he's changed, disavows racist statements. "I'm ashamed of it," he told WRAL.

A Republican operative with a long résumé in North Carolina politics, and a history of pro-Confederacy advocacy and appearances on a “pro-white” radio show, resigned Thursday from a job at the North Carolina General Assembly. Carlton Huffman started his job at the statehouse this month, but his job title wasn’t immediately available from the legislature Thursday. His online résumé on LinkedIn listed him as a policy advisor to Speaker of the House Tim Moore. The departure comes a day after statehouse reporters received a lengthy, anonymous email detailing interviews and online posts Huffman made more than a decade ago expressing sympathy for white supremacist causes. WRAL wasn’t immediately able to verify the identity of the email sender, but Huffman himself confirmed key details to WRAL. Many of the interviews and posts detailed in the email remain online. Some of his online posts appeared under an assumed name. “Those views that I expressed represent a time in my life that I am not proud of,” Huffman said in an interview Thursday. “Views that I have shifted from, that I disavow.”

Huffman, 38, has a large online footprint, including interviews some 13 years ago with “The Political Cesspool,” a radio program and website that describes itself as “pro-white” and advocates reviving “the white birthrate … to grow the percentage of whites in the world relative to other races.” Huffman appeared several times on Cesspool, including an interview in 2010 during which he said it broke his heart to see the Confederate flag brought down from atop the South Carolina state capitol and that the forced integration of the University of Mississippi in 1962 began “a very long fall from grace.” In that interview Huffman praised university students who “stood side-by-side with Southern patriots” to try and block integration and “change the character of the campus.” When the host says “we have got to coalesce as an ethnocentric group and fight together as one,” Huffman responds "absolutely.” “We have to stand together,” he said in the interview. “And we also have to get involved with the political process.”

Huffman was also part of a segregationist group called the Council of Conservative Citizens. He said Thursday that he left after the group expressed openly antisemitic views. Huffman said that he “did not embrace white supremacy or bigotry” but that he was “too closely associated” with people who did. “Those views, they were ugly,” he said. “I admit it, and I hate that the world is seeing that, and I’m ashamed of it. But I know in my heart that the person that I am today is not the person that is reflected in that email and those writings.” The details of Huffman’s hiring weren’t immediately clear Thursday. Moore’s office declined to provide any information other than to say Huffman was no longer employed at the statehouse.

Holden critic Huffman unrepentant
The former House aide behind an anonymous smear of former Gov. William Holden still opposes a pardon for the disgraced governor.

During their session at the Old Capitol Tuesday, state lawmakers are expected to vote to pardon disgraced former governor William Holden.

Carlton Huffman hopes they won’t.

Huffman is the former assistant to Representative Jonathan Jordan, R-Ashe. He’s the person who went into the Senate chamber and distributed an unsigned letter denigrating William Holden on the day the Senate was scheduled to debate pardoning the Reconstruction governor.

Holden, a Republican, was impeached by Democrats in 1870 and removed from office in 1871, the only NC governor to have been subjected to that process. It happened after he called out the militia to respond to violence in Caswell and Alamance Counties. Some early 20th century academics called Holden "corrupt and arrogant." But more recent scholars say his impeachment was political revenge for his defense of black voters targeted by the Ku Klux Klan.

So, having a racist past makes him rather icky, though if he actually has overcome it, good for him.
As far as this case goes, though, his racist past shouldn't matter. Racists can be molested, too. If, however, he's saying he's no longer racist and there's evidence to the contrary, that can be used to challenge his credibility.

being an asshole doesn't make it okay to be molested!

there are two issues there.

1. He is an asshole

2. He was molested.

the two do not diverge.

He's trying to achieve a tough guy look in the 2011 photo, but now we know the truth.

If a man tried to touch my junk when I was driving a car, I would deposit the gentleman on the side of the road in poor physical condition and continue the trip without his companionship. I would deal with the situation immediately, and not be concerned about suing the bastid. I don't care if he is Matt Fucking Schlapp. Don't touch my junk. :fingerwag:

'Course, if'n he wanted to sue me, I'd deal with that, too also.

But a tough guy doesn't think "lawsuit!" when another man tries to touch him inappropriately. He thinks "kick his ass and throw him out of the car".

I'm a liberal and a progressive, but only up to a certain point. :smoking:

If you’re a woman, physical retaliation is usually not an option. (And if you are willing to make a big stink, your grad degree, your job, perhaps your career, are at stake.) But oh, hey, you get to revisit as quiet nightmares—for the rest of your life—the petty sexual assaults, all the near misses, and critically, the humiliating inability to protect yourself, you experienced and endured as a physically all but powerless, woman.

Matt probably chose this guy because he was unlikely to fight back. People like him zero in on certain types where their domination techniques will work, and it does not matter if they are a man or a woman in that case.

Man claiming sexual misconduct by CPAC leader accused of sexual battery
By Beth Reinhard and Isaac Arnsdorf
March 10, 2023 at 12:16 p.m. EST

The longtime Republican campaign aide who has leveled sexual misconduct allegations against Matt Schlapp, the influential leader of the Conservative Political Action Conference, was accused last month of sexual battery. Carlton Huffman, 39, was recently ordered by a judge to stay away for one year from a Raleigh, N.C., housemate who alleged he performed unwanted sex acts on her and another woman, according to court documents filed in Wake County Superior Court.

The Feb. 27 protective order was issued about one month after Huffman filed a lawsuit in Virginia alleging sexual battery and defamation by Schlapp. Schlapp has denied the claims. Huffman was accused of performing sex acts on two women, ages 19 and 22, inside his Raleigh apartment without their consent. The younger woman had recently moved into the apartment with Huffman before the alleged incident on Feb. 15. The women said they felt unsafe in part because they knew Huffman had a gun in the house. Raleigh police said the case was investigated and closed; an incident report shows no charges were filed.

The 19-year-old woman was granted the year-long restraining order against Huffman, while the 22-year-old obtained a protective order for 10 days; a judge then dismissed her complaint. In an interview with The Washington Post, the 22-year-old — whom The Post is not naming as an alleged victim of sexual violence — said she was offended by Huffman’s portrayal of himself in recent weeks as a sexual battery victim. Huffman told WRAL News, which first reported the protective order, that he was “innocent of improper conduct.” His attorney, Tim Hyland, declined to comment.

I infer the 22-year-old was a friend visiting the 19-year-old.

But a teenaged woman boarding with a man twice her age sounds like an untold story.

I appreciate Republicans beating the crap out of each other. Get dirty, fellas.

So Huffman says Schlapping "tried to take my dignity". But I don't know whether he realizes that the young women may not have wanted their dignity to be infringed upon either. Guys like that are rarely any kind of introspective.

There's a cool guy on Twitter who is an McD Franchisee. He posts a lot of the backstage workings of the company (which is doing well, meanwhile tons of Burger Kings are going bankrupt, details are in his feed). We've talked often about the ice cream machines, there's a big lawsuit about a company that made a workaround for McD machines that violated McD's agreement. The law firm handling Dominion is repping the start-up. Anyway, I let him know about whiny Schlapp...
