Jury Begins Deliberating in Trial of Analyst Who Gathered Steele Dossier Claims

A Trump-era special prosecutor and a defense lawyer delivered starkly clashing views in closing arguments on Monday about the motives of Igor Danchenko, a Russia analyst who was a key contributor to the so-called Steele dossier.
A jury will now decide whether Mr. Danchenko is guilty of lying to the F.B.I. about one of his sources for information in the Steele dossier, a compendium of unsubstantiated assertions that Donald J. Trump and his 2016 campaign were colluding with Russia.
The case is a major test of the special counsel, John H. Durham, who was appointed in 2019 to investigate the origins of the F.B.I.’s inquiry into the nature of the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia. An earlier indictment brought by Mr. Durham ended with an acquittal in May, and the trial appears to be his last chance to obtain a conviction in a case he developed.
In the closing arguments, a prosecutor working for Mr. Durham asserted that Mr. Danchenko had clearly lied to the F.B.I. and that his false assertions had a material effect. He pointed to part of the dossier that the F.B.I. cited to bolster applications to wiretap a former Trump campaign adviser with ties to Russia.

I have not followed this case as closely as I did the Sussman trial. Did the defense put on a case at all or just figure Durham's case was completely lacking?

IMHO the defense put on a pretty good case, to the point where Durham attacked one of his own witnesses and asked that he be declared a hostile witness. But I didn't follow the whole thing.

I remember distinctly being told over and over how the Durham probe was going to indict half the Beltway and send all kinds of evil Trump haters to jail.
Durham couldn't convict a ham sandwich.

This gentleman must not be informed that 1) the grand jury Mr. Durham used is now expired, kaput, disassembled, and gone, and 2) Mr. Durham has no intention of empaneling a new one, as reported not long ago in the failing NY Times.
Because that would make this person very sad.
The plain truth is, the Durham investigation is now over, and he will write a totally bullshit report for us all to larf about.

I do tend to agree with you. Any. Day. Now.
But in all fairness and transparency, some folks who dress left (myself included, for a while) had similarly entrenched optimism about the Mueller investigation. So I try to empathize a bit with the hope-clingers.
